Gonzalez money for the Nationals in New York
    Justin Hartling

The Washington Nationals could not be sending a better pitcher to Citi Field's mound Friday. Gio Gonzalez has led the Nationals to six straight victories in New York.

Gonzalez has given up eight runs over his past six starts in the Big Apple while averaging six strikeouts per game.

Marlins have been decimated by Hamels
      Justin Hartling

The Miami Marlins have been completely dominated by Cole Hamels. In Hamels' last 11 starts against the Marlins, the total has gone under nine times thanks to his pitching performance.

Hamels has given up less than two runs per game while averaging nearly seven K's a contest.

This Padres pitcher has been a boon for totals
        Justin Hartling

Eric Stults will take the mound with an impressive under streak against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Under has gone 8-1 in the lefties last nine starts against the D-Backs.

Stults has only surrendered 2.4 runs per game and has only twice in those nine games has he allowed more than three runs.

            Friday's games
Long-awaiting debut of nomadic QB Kiel, who committed to three clubs before he got to Cincinnati. Bearcats are last D-I team to tee it up; they are 11-7 as home favorites last three years, 3-2 under Tuberville. Toledo got hammered at home by former coach Pinkel's Mizzou squad last week; now they face Bearcat squad they upset 29-23 (+6) two years ago. Toledo covered 12 of last 16 as road dog, 7 of 8 under Campbell.

Baylor QB Petty (back) expected to play against Buffalo squad that lost 70-13 (+37) in Waco LY, with Bears gaining 781 yards, averaging around 18 yards per pass attempt. Buffalo is 5-3 in last eight games as a home dog; they lost seven starters on defense, gave up 341 rushing yards last week to Army, which tried only seven passes (7-7/125). Baylor covered only one of last seven as a road favorite, eight of last 11 outside Big X.

Mercury trample Sky 97-68 in Game 2
              September 9, 2014

PHOENIX (AP) - Brittney Griner shook off two blows to the face to finish with 19 points, Diana Taurasi added 18 and the Phoenix Mercury made it two straight routs in the WNBA Finals with a 97-68 win over the Chicago Sky on Tuesday night.

The underdog Sky were far more aggressive after being blown out in Game 1, fighting Phoenix for every inch early on while leaving Griner with a scratch on her eye and a bloody mouth.

Griner and her teammates shrugged it off, running away from Chicago with a 15-2 run in the second quarter and grabbing a firm hold on the best-of-five series.

Game 3 is Friday in Chicago, where the Sky will have to find some way of slowing the rising Mercury, who shot 56 percent.

Elena Delle Donne led the Sky with 22 points after playing 11 minutes in Game 1 due to lower-back pain.

DeWanna Bonner had 15 points for Phoenix, and Penny Taylor scored 14. Griner blocked four shots after setting a finals record with eight in the opener.

Game 1 was a blowout from the opening tip, the Mercury racing out to a 22-point halftime lead as Griner swatted Chicago's shots and Phoenix shot a finals-record 58 percent.

The Sky were much more aggressive at the start of Game 2, pressuring the Mercury into mistakes and tough shots while taking their first lead of the series.

Even better news for Chicago, Delle Donne's cranky back appeared to be in decent shape. Last season's WNBA Rookie of the Year moved freely and had 12 points in the first half.

Griner got the worst of the Sky's physical play midway through the first quarter, when Sylvia Fowles inadvertently hit her on the right eye while fighting for a rebound.

Griner lay on the floor for several seconds and appeared to have trouble seeing before going to the bench with a scratch across her eyelid.

She returned to the game, but got hit again late in the second quarter, this time an elbow to the mouth by Fowles.

Griner spit blood behind the basket, hit two free throws and dropped in another shot at the rim on Phoenix's next possession.

While Griner was getting beat up, Taurasi put on a show.

She hit a long 3-pointer and scored on a three-point play during the 15-2 run, and then added another 3 from the corner for 13 points in the quarter. Taurasi had 16 in the half and Phoenix led 51-36 after Erin Phillips scored on a three-point play in transition with 0.5 seconds left.

So much for Chicago's extra effort.

The Sky never recovered from Phoenix's big run, trailing by 15 or more most of the second half to fall into a huge hole in the series.

History siding with Mercury, three-game sweep
                Justin Hartling

The Phoenix Mercury have a commanding two game lead in the WNBA Finals and it very well could be a three-game sweep Friday. The Mercury have taken all four meetings against the Chicago Sky this season straight-up and against the spread.

The Western Conference champions have won all four games by an average of 18 points.

The Mercury are 6.5-road favorites Friday.

Washington Nationals at New York Mets September 12, 07:10 EST
The Washington Nationals and New York Mets get ready to duel again after the Nationals opened the series at Citi Field with a 6-2 victory last night. Washington leads the National League East with a 83-62 record, providing a 8 ½-game cushion over it's closest rival. The combination of that lofty status and having Gio Gonzalez do their bidding presents a solid case for Nationals as the right choice tonight. The Nationals' left-hander has been light's out vs Metropolitans in the Big Apple winning five of his last six starts (6-0 TSR). Gonzalez trades pitches with Dillon Gee who has seen Mets lose both attempts vs Nationals this year and hits the mound with a 1-4 Team Start Record last five vs Washington.
