Preview: Athletics (86-72) at Rangers (66-92)

      Game: 2
Venue: Globe Life Park in Arlington
      Date: September 26, 2014 8:05 PM EDT

The Oakland Athletics may be sputtering down the stretch, but they're still on the cusp of clinching a third straight trip to the postseason.

The last-place Texas Rangers would like to continue interfering with that plan.

Scott Kazmir will try to end his troublesome stretch and help Oakland move closer to the playoffs by bouncing back from another defeat to the Rangers on Friday night.

The A's (86-73) are two games ahead of Seattle for the second wild-card spot and trail Kansas City by one for the top position with three contests left in the regular season.

A win and a Mariners loss to the Los Angeles Angels later Friday would clinch a postseason berth for Oakland. However, the A's haven't looked capable of taking care of their own business lately, especially against Texas (66-93).

They've dropped 19 of 27 games, including four straight to the Rangers while scoring seven runs and batting .129 with runners in scoring position. Texas went 0 for 6 in that scenario Thursday before Luke Gregerson served up a walkoff homer to Adrian Beltre in a 2-1 defeat to open this four-game set in Arlington.

"They're all different, but the common denominator is we're not scoring any runs," said manager Bob Melvin, whose team was swept in a three-game home series by the Rangers last week. "We're getting opportunities to do it and we're still not getting them in."

This is not an opportune time for Melvin's club to be struggling offensively, especially with Kazmir (14-9, 3.63) taking the mound. He's 0-4 with an 8.58 ERA over his past six starts, raising his ERA nearly a full run.

"My body, everything feels great," Kazmir told MLB's official website. "It's just a matter of consistency. I'm not consistent out there. I can hit my spots, but a matter of doing it consistently, that's something I just haven't done."

He certainly didn't do it against Texas on Sept. 16, when he was tagged for six runs and nine hits over 4 1-3 innings of a 6-3 loss. The left-hander wasn't any better five days later versus Philadelphia, surrendering six runs and a season-high 11 hits with nine strikeouts before being pulled with one out in the sixth of an 8-6 win in 10.

The Rangers have proven to be a problem for most opponents lately, with the AL's worst team winning 12 of 13 following Beltre's dramatics Thursday.

He's 8 for 19 with two homers and three doubles in his last five games against Oakland.

"It's been fun," Beltre said. "We've been playing very well."

Manager Tim Bogar feels Texas could learn something from watching Oakland clinch a playoff spot.

"It's never fun to watch," he said. "But it's also ... I don't want it to happen, but if it does, I kind of hope all these young guys stay out there and watch it. Because that's what we want to be doing. You get to see the joy of their hard work come to fruition. Maybe that will put a little seed in the back of (the Rangers') minds that that's what they want to do."

Nick Tepesch (5-10, 4.14) has already slowed down the A's, allowing three runs - one earned - in six innings while earning the victory opposite Kazmir on Sept. 16.

The second-year righty was even better at AL West champion Los Angeles on Sunday, yielding one run and four hits in seven innings before leaving without a decision in a 2-1 win.

Josh Donaldson is 4 for 11 with two doubles against Tepesch and Brandon Moss is 4 for 10 with a homer.

Hondo regained his winning form Thursday night, hitting paydirt with Big Blue over the Redskins to lower the accounts payable to 1,620 urlachers.

Friday night: Mr. Aitch expects the Lobos to give him something to howl about — 10 units on New Mexico to beat the number against Fresno State.

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders @ Old Dominion Monarchs

5* OVER 67.5 TOTAL POINTS SCORED

I expect this to be a good old fashioned shoot out. Middle Tennessee and Old Dominion both are loaded with offensive weapons. ODU quarterback Taylor Heinicke can put points on the board quickly with multiple receiving threats and they lit up the defending Conference USA champion Rice Owls last week. Middle Tennessee State also has a weapon under center in quarterback Austin Grammar. Grammar is completing over 68% of his passes and is also a threat to run. The defensive side of the ball is where there is a lot left to be desired for both teams. Middle Tennessee is allowing 31.3 points per game and that includes factoring in a 61-7 win against Savannah State. Against the big boys the Blue Raiders are allowing just under 40 points per game. Old Dominion is not much better at just under 30 points per game allowed. The Monarch defense did hold Eastern Michigan to just three points, but the Eagles have one of the worst offenses in college football as they average just 12 points per game. On the flip side, ODU's defense allowed Hampton to put up 28 points on them. I'm not much of a totals player, but I'm playing the OVER big in this one.

MLB Final Weekend betting cheat sheet: Kazmir looks to end struggles

Here’s a comprehensive look at betting notes for the final weekend of the regular season:

                          Washington Whitewash

The Washington Nationals (-170, U 6.5) continued their sizzling Under streak Thursday, blanking the visiting New York Mets 3-0 behind seven innings of one-hit ball from Gio Gonzalez. The Nationals are 2-9 O/U in their last 11 games, allowing more than two runs just twice in that span.

                          Putting the K in Kluber

Cleveland ace Corey Kluber looks to rack up more strikeouts in his final start of the season as the Indians (-164, 6.5) host Tampa Bay. Kluber has 28 strikeouts in his last two starts; the Indians are 8-2 SU and 1-9 O/U in starts where Kluber records double-digit whiffs.

                          Rockies’ Road Woes

Colorado will try to avoid going out with a whimper as it resumes its season-ending series Saturday against the host Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies are an astounding 6-36 SU in their last 42 games away from Coors Field, scoring more than four runs just four times over that stretch.

                          Favorites Finish Strong

Expect the usual suspects to prevail as the regular season draws to a close Sunday. Favorites are 33-13 SU over the previous three years, winning at a 71.7-percent clip that far exceeds the 2014 regular-season average of 57 percent.

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Oakland lefty Scott Kazmir will look to end his recent struggles Friday as he leads the Athletics (-167, 8) against the host Texas Rangers. Kazmir has allowed six or more runs in four of his previous six starts to see his season ERA balloon to 3.63.

                          * Masahiro Tanaka ends his rookie season against a familiar foe as his New York Yankees take on the host Boston Red Sox. Tanaka faced the Red Sox twice in his first major-league campaign and recorded a pair of wins, including a complete-game seven-hitter on June 28.

                          * A fantastic season comes to an end Sunday for St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright. The veteran right-hander (20-9, 2.38 ERA) enters the weekend 13th in starter value ($1,015) and hasn’t allowed a run in back-to-back starts; he’ll face visiting San Diego on Sunday.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Edwin Encarnacion is ending the season on a high as he prepares to face the visiting Baltimore Orioles (-105, 8) on Friday. Encarnacion is batting .391 with two homers, 11 RBIs and a 1.160 OPS over the last seven days.

                          * Expect a big game from Chase Utley on Saturday as his Philadelphia Phillies tangle with Aaron Harang and the Atlanta Braves. Utley is a .406 career hitter against Harang, with four doubles, a home run and six RBIs over 32 at-bats.

                          * It could be a long day for Los Angeles Angels hitters on Sunday as they wrap up their regular season against Seattle ace Felix Hernandez and the host Mariners. Members of the Angels roster are hitting a combined .208 with 115 strikeouts in 432 combined at-bats versus Hernandez.

                          Totals Streak

Los Angeles Dodgers (14-2-2 O/U): The Dodgers are ending the season with a bang, having either scored or allowed seven or more runs in 10 of their last 13 games. The season-ending Over surge has moved Los Angeles to 80-70-9 entering the final weekend of the 2014 campaign.

                          Prop of the Day

Bettors may want to consider a lower line for Friday’s matchup between the Rays and Indians, with Under 5 paying +200. Kluber has been one of the stingiest pitchers in baseball since the All-Star Break, while counterpart Chris Archer has allowed just four runs over his last three starts.

                          Injury Notes

                          * Washington Nationals outfielder Denard Span (knee) will return to the lineup for Friday’s doubleheader against the visiting Miami Marlins. It isn’t clear whether Span, who suffered the injury Tuesday night, will play one or both ends of the twin bill.

                          * White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia left Thursday’s game against Kansas City with lower back stiffness and will sit out Friday. Garcia missed a whopping 113 games from early-April to mid-August with a shoulder injury; Chicago was 54-59 SU, 56-54-3 O/U and +651 units in that span.

                          Weather Watch

                          * Fans at AT&T Park should expect winds blowing out to right-center field at 11 mph for Friday’s game between the host Giants (-147, 6.5) and San Diego. Teams averaged 1.43 home runs while batting .262 in 23 games under similar conditions in 2013, slightly above stadium averages.

                          * Dodger Stadium will see wind blowing out to center field at 7 mph Saturday when Los Angeles welcomes Colorado to town. Teams averaged nearly two home runs per game with the wind blowing out to center a season ago, well above the park average of 1.65.
