3-Unit Play. #571 Take Green Bay (-1.5) over Cleveland State (2 p.m., Saturday, January 31)
Green Bay has already slipped up in the league on the road to a team they should have beaten in Oakland. And with oddsmakers favoring the Phoenix here, I definitely agree with Green Bay being the road chalk and expected to take care of business. Cleveland State hasn’t played as well as most thought they would this year. Green Bay gets the road ‘W’ here.
3-Unit Play. #575 Take LSU (-5) over Mississippi State (2 p.m., Saturday, January 31)
Mississippi State just isn’t any good. LSU is even better than their 16-4 record suggests, at least I am pretty high on this team. They are a big, athletic team and one of the best rebounding teams in the country. I see the Tigers taking this one convincingly over the Bulldogs on the road. Lay the number with the Baton Rogue Bengals.
3-Unit Play. #591 Take Wichita State (-2.5) over Northern Iowa (4 p.m., Saturday, January 31)
Northern Iowa is a really good team. And this should be a really good game. However I may be in the minority when I say I don’t see the Shockers losing a league game in the Missouri Valley. This one will be their toughest test in the conference. They find a way to score a victory over the Panthers in a low scoring, hard-fought contest.
3-Unit Play. #595 Take William Mary (-2.5) over James Madison (4 p.m., Saturday, January 31)
We’ve had good success with the Tribe this year. I think the road favorite price tag is justified. They are simply better than James Madison. I’m willing to lay this number with William Mary here for them to continue their strong CAA play and stay atop the conference standings. Road team by eight.
3-Unit Play. #597 Take UNC Wilmington (+1.5) over Drexel (4 p.m., Saturday, January 31)
This is another CAA play where I like the road team. Wilimington definitely has thoroughly exceeded preseason expectations having been projected toward the bottom of the Colonial this season. Nonetheless, the results on the court show the Seahawks to be much better and full of confidence. They’ve reeled off four straight to improve to 7-2 in conference play, and this one is another winner for them over Drexel.
7-Unit Play #706 Take Morehead State (+1) over Eastern Kentucky (4:30 p.m., Saturday, January 31)
Over the last week we’ve cashed alongside Morehead State during their three-game win streak. In a six-day span the Eagles have essentially turned around what was an underachieving start to league play via three straight road league wins to put them back among the OVC contenders. Picked as one of the best teams in the conference at the start of the season, it actually took Morehead a while to get sorted, needing time to blend their roster with players back from injury who missed significant time last year as well as several key transfers. The team had a poor December but has really responded with their best ball of the season in late January. Now they get back home for another big game and the chance to carry momentum a step further with another win. Rival EKU comes to town, and Morehead will remember last year’s home 11-point loss to the Colonels. 2014-15’s version of the Eagles, however, is a more balanced, healthier and much more capabale Eagles team. They are going to get the better of this match-up on their home floor. There is a ton of value on Morehead State today as we don’t have to lay a single point on what I say is not only the better team but the team also playing better basketball coming in. Basically, oddsmakers goofed on this line by not favoring the home Eagles. Having backed Morehead each of the past three games during their win streak, we’ve seen the quality basketball this team has been playing. Even Morehead’s last two losses were by three points each. We’re backing a team that is playing their best team ball of the season. Conversely, Eastern Kentucky is going the other direction. They’ve lost three straight and four of their last five, also allowing over 80 points in each of their last two games. Six of EKU’s nine losses have been on the road, and here is another setback away from home. This game isn’t going to be a blowout, rather a competitive Ohio Valley clash. But Morehead State at home with their momentum and positive vibes will continue their strong play. The Eagles take their fourth consecutive game and cash a big time winner for us in the process.
3-Unit Play. #635 Take Texas (+2.5) over Baylor (6 p.m., Saturday, January 31)
Texas has lost two straight albeit against really good competition. The Big 12 has been the deepest and arguably best conference in the country this year, and that shows with another big test for the Longhorns here in Waco. But I like Texas’ size as well as Rick Barnes’ team playing with a sense of urgency not to drop a third straight game. Baylor is a good team, another ranked opponent for UT, however I think the size and interior play from the ‘Horns puts them over the top and worthy of an outright winner over the Bears.
