OT included. The Flames conclude what could end up being their regular season defining seven-game road trip here and so far they have came through with flying colours. The Flames are 4-2 on this trip. Their two losses occurred against the Islanders, 2-1 and the Rangers 1-0. Calgary's four wins occurred against New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston and Detroit. The 5-2 win over the Red Wings was Calgary's third game in four days and tail-end of back-to-backs and they were down 2-0. They could easily be 6-0 on this trip. One can only imagine the atmosphere and confidence in that Flames dressing room right now. They've been written off for dead time after time this year. They were called overachievers and they were told it couldn't last. They were especially written off for dead after Mark Giordano was injured early on in this trip. All they do is keep responding and all the market does is keep undervaluing them. Calgary figures to come out more determined than ever here in an attempt to put an exclamation mark on this trip. It sure doesn't hurt that Flames goaltender Kari Ramo is in the zone and has posted a .936 save percentage in road games, which is the highest in the NHL among goaltenders that have participated in at least 12 road contests. The Flames “us against the world” attitude and their extreme determination makes them very worthy again as a pooch.


Speaking of written off for dead and one need not look further than the Ottawa Senators. A month ago, the Sens were 12 points out of a playoff spot and nobody even considered them a threat. The only threat the Sens posed back then was the threat of grabbing the #1 overall pick in the upcoming June draft. When both Ottawa's starting goaltenders went down and they summoned career minor-leaguer Andrew Hammond to fill in, some wondered if the Sens could even compete. The rest of the story is becoming legendary. Ottawa has picked up 15 out of a possible 16 points with Hammond in net. That includes recent road wins in Anaheim, L.A., San Jose and Winnipeg. Suddenly the Sens are right back in the playoff picture and now they're back at home. The Sens are also expected to win now, which is a huge difference than playing games when you are expected to lose. Suddenly the spotlight is back on. Suddenly, there is a buzz surrounding the team. For the first time all year, the Sens will play a game under some pressure. Upon returning home from that hugely successful road trip and carrying all the momentum in the world with them, Ottawa was tooth and nails to narrowly escape the Sabres with a 3-2, come-from-behind win after Buffalo scored twice in its first six shots on net. This is the second game back from said trip. We can't stress enough how much more difficult it is to win under these conditions than the conditions they were playing in when they first called up Hammond. Suddenly, this kid from out of nowhere is being swarmed by media. He was also named the NHL player of the month in February. He has even earned himself the nickname, “Hamburglar”. It took Bobby Hull three years to earn the nickname “The Golden Jet” and it took Maurice Richard 2½ years to earn the nickname “The Rocket”. It's a nice story that has some legs but it is likely to die very quickly. The Sens are merely an average hockey team that got hot for a road trip. The media eats up these Cinderella stories and in the process causes an overreaction by the betting public. That's where we come in to scoop up the remnants of this beautiful overlay.
