There is a big difference between pitching in relief and being a starter in the majors. Last season in 33 relief innings Sanchez had a 22% K-rate, 3.0 K/BB, and 2.8/3.0 FIP/xFIP. Those are excellent numbers. This year in his only start he didn’t fare as well, allowing 7 hits and 2 HR’s in 3.1 innings. The bigger issue is that he only struck out 1 and issued 2 BB’s. Looking at his ST numbers, Sanchez had 11 K’s and 10 BB’s in 22.2 innings pitched, a huge drop from this peripherals last season in the bullpen. The ST #’s and his first outing of the year tells me that the kid is not ready to be a starter just yet. Of course this is baseball, and things could turn on a dime. Then again, Sanchez is strictly a fastball pitcher right now, throwing the pitch 88% of the time last year and 83% in his first start this year. Most starters that don’t have solid off-speed offerings tend to really struggle in the big leagues – though there are some exceptions of course. I’m banking on Sanchez struggling once again tonight.

As far as the Rays are concerned, they’re sending their current #1 starter, Archer, to the mound. Archer has been excellent so far in his 2 early season starts. His fastball/slider combo is firing on all cylinders, and he’s dominating right-handed batters right now (2.4 xFIP and 28% K-rate). Toronto’s big bats of Donaldson, Bautista, Encarnacion, and Russell Martin are all right-handed. Archer was very solid in his 2 late season starts @ Toronto last year, registering 15 K’s to 4 BB’s in 14 innings, with 2 ER’s. He had xFIP’s of 2.9 and 3.1 in those individually, indicating that he truly did pitch very well in TOR. I believe there’s a bigger difference between these two starters than the odds indicate, and I’ll back the Rays to bounce back tonight after yesterday’s loss.
