Pirates +120
A rare scheduling dynamics baseball play. Lots of these in football and buckets, but generally not on the diamond. I think I'll take a chance here though, This Mets/Cubs series was big in terms of coverage, and the games the last couple days were really tense, with the Cubbies rallying to win both times. I think there's some potential for a bit of a letdown here. The downside is the Cubs have done damage to lefties thus far, and it's not like Jeff Locke is a shutdown guy for the Bucs. But I don't see any advantage on the home team's side with Kyle Hendricks, and in fact on the overall metrics, Locke actually qualifies as a value dog. Wind forecast is out to left so this could turn into a bullpen game, in which case Pittsburgh would own an advantage. I think there's enough here to go ahead with the Pirates.
Yankees -122 (Pineda/Young)
I made this Yankees -140, so no beefs with the number. Rare game where the Royals don't have the blowaway bullpen edge as the Yankees late combo is every bit as good as KC's. A little concerned that the Yankees offense getting shut down last three nights, but Pineda is pitching at an exceptional level right now. Young has been legit this season to some extent, but there's still that .105 BABIP, which is crazy. Pineda go with all the way now, so I'll give the Yankees a play.
Red Sox +102
Team data favors Mariners here, as the Red Sox have not hit lefties at all well. But I'm giving Buchholz an edge over Happ. Never can be sure about Buchholz and Happ could legitimately be pitching the best ball of his career right now. But numbers still say Buchholz a little better. Boston could have a decent bullpen edge here. Uehara worked each of the last two nights, but both were very easy ninth innings and he should be available. Rodney threw a ton of pitches in his inning last night, and Carson Smith has worked back to back. The rest of that Seattle bullpen, save for maybe Joe Beimel, is not good. This is actually priced about right, but Red Sox have shown some life with a 4-1 last 5, and I'll give them a shot here.
6-Unit Play. Take #957 San Francisco -135 over Cincinnati (Friday, May 15th at 7:10 p.m.)
Value is big in this one! Bumgarner vs Marquis at -135 is the definition of Value. The main reason this line is so low is because the Reds have won 12 out of 15 at home vs the Giants. While that could be alarming, Bumgarner won his only start at Cincy during that stretch -- he went 8 innings allowing just 3 hits and 1 earned run on June 5th of last year. This is a great spot to "get our money in good". Bumgarner is pitching really well as of late. He has a 1.77 era in his last three starts and I look for him to help the Giants take game 2 of this series. Marquis has never lived up to the hype. He has a 5.66 era and he has allowed a staggering 7 home run balls in just 35 innings pitched this year.
