Arkansas State welcomes starting quarterback Fredi Knighten back into the starting lineup after 3 games on the sidelines with an injury. Knighten didn’t play well the first 2 weeks against the good defenses of USC and Missouri (just 3.5 yards per pass play) but he averaged 6.7 yppp last season (against teams that would allow 6.7 yppp to an average quarterback), which is more indicative of his level of play than the small sample of 48 pass plays earlier this season (especially given that he has all the same receivers as last season). South Alabama has been really inconsistent defensively so it’s tough to get a read on that unit but overall the Jaguars’ defense has allowed 6.3 yards per play and 39 points per game in 4 games against FBS foes that would combine to average 5.5 yppl against an average team and I project Arkansas State to move the ball pretty well in this game (5.6 yppl) despite struggling so far this season (1.1 yppl worse than average).

The South Alabama offense is pretty decent with UAB transfer Cody Clements posting better than average numbers (6.9 yards per pass play against teams that would allow 6.7 yppp to an average quarterback), which makes up for a poor rushing attack that has managed just 3.9 yards per rushing play. Overall the Jaguars are 0.2 yards per play worse than average offensively and are projected to average a modest 5.4 yppl in this game against a solid Arkansas State defense that’s yielded just 5.4 yppl to 4 FBS teams that would combine to average 5.5 yppl against an average defensive team.

Overall the math favors Arkansas State by 8 points in part to a significant edge in projected turnovers (Knighten has just 12 interceptions in 565 career pass plays while Clements has thrown 6 picks in 160 pass plays this season and was turnover prone running the same system last year at UAB. The Red Wolves also have the edge in special teams and the line value favors them. What doesn’t favor Arkansas State is the situation, as the Red Wolves apply to a negative 1-21-2 ATS subset of a 36-82-3 ATS situation. I’ll pass on the side and lean a bit with the under.
