6-Unit Play. #503. Take Detroit Pistons +6.5 over Atlanta Hawks (Tuesday @ 8:05pm est)
The Pistons took a lot of heat for giving Reggie Jackson a 5 year and 80 Million dollar contract and they are going to see if that pans out today or not. The Pistons are the biggest public underdog going into opening night (though the Pelicans are +10 dogs to Golden State, 44% back New Orleans) as only 35% back the Mo-Town crew as they come into Atlanta. Detroit is a hand constructed team by Van Gundy and he is hoping along with all the Detroit Front Office that Jackson is the product they paid for at the end of last season as he has the potential to be a 18 point per game and 8 assist type of guy. He is a slasher and this team believes that they can duplicate the success of this team from the end of last year to this year.
Jackson will also look to live up to his contract this year as well and it starts on opening night with the nations’ eyes on this team. The Pistons have a nice core of Jackson, Drummond, Marcus Morris, Ilyasova and Tolliver. This is a team that will be hungry to prove itself early and with a Van Gundy coached team we believe they will be sharp on the defensive end as well. Needless to say when this team gets Jennings back they will even more potent. We believe the Pistons have a decent shot at winning this game Outright as the line itself indicates a much closer game than people anticipate.
The Pistons are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games against the East, the Hawks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 homes and are notorious for starting the season slowly when being favorites and there is a real chance that this game is a 103-100 type of game in which the Hawks win or possibly the Pistons winning this contest Outright by the same score. The Pistons will be much more spirited in their play today and we like them to be a quality active underdog.
Other thoughts: Lean on Warriors Under, but they could do the get one of the gipper type routine for Kerr and his recovery, interesting to see if Pelicans get some revenge for getting swept 0-4 last year, the Warriors former Assistant is now the coach for an added element, also the Cavs are underdogs which are of note whenever that happens, lean on the Bulls -3 here with the new coach and healthier crew in place.
3-Unit NBA Future. Chicago Bulls Over 49.5 Wins
The Bulls have new coaching and new blood with Hoiberg and that will help this team. We love taking new coaches when they have talent to do well and that is the case here. With a healthier lineup and despite having Rose or not having Rose we still like the Bulls to do well as this will be more of a team atmosphere. Note this is a coach that took a dormant Iowa State team in the Big12 where it is extremely difficult to win and to recruit kids to Iowa and made them better and now he actually has talent with Noah and company and given that this team had 50 wins last year, we can see them at least holding serve if not picking up 2 more wins this year given that they have new blood and their bench is a bit healthier, We like the Bulls getting 52 wins this year.
Take a few other notes here in the fact that Portis is the real deal, Pau Gasol, Butler who was the most improved player in the league last year, Dunleavy, Aaron Brooks, Hinrich, Snell, McDermott and Gibson. This team has a culture of winning and Hoiberg is acutely aware of the fact this team won 50 games last year and he will be focused on making sure at least that threshold will be maintained this year
