College Football Pick: Florida State at Clemson

Florida State Seminoles at Clemson Tigers

So the BCS committee has Clemson ranked at #1, LSU at #2 with Ohio State at #3 and Alabama at #4. That will certainly change with LSU playing at Alabama in one of numerous marquee match-ups on Saturday’s football card.

My focus on this first offering of the final four to play for the Championship is on the Clemson Tigers who are 11 point favorites vs. perennial nemesis Florida State.

Just over one month ago Notre Dame nearly pulled off the upset at Clemson, losing 24–22. Clemson’s secondary allowed the Fighting Irish to pass for 321 yards and last week at NC State vs. the Wolfpack, the Tigers allowed NC State to pass for 254 yards. In my estimation, that does not bode well for the Tigers when hosting Florida State.

Last week, albeit vs. the Orange, the Seminoles passed for 354 yards with their back-up quarterback. The Tigers also allowed Louisville to air it out to the tune of 253 yards. Last week the Seminoles held out starting quarterback Everett Golson and tailback Dalvin Cook. There’s no doubt in my mind they’ll both be playing come kick-off at 3:30 ET, and when referring to last week’s game, in his second career start, Sean Maguire threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns.

Florida State’s coach Jimbo Fisher told reporters “We feel very comfortable with them both playing.”
Cook, who has been fabulous in rushing for 1,037 yards and 11 scores in 7 games is averaging 8.2 yards per carry. The Seminoles rank 14th nationally in scoring defense allowing only 16.8 points per game and have allowed only 4 rushing touchdowns through eight games.

· Recent play has Clemson is 6–17 straight up in this series and been favored only twice in those 23 meetings.
· Florida State has lost but one of their last 9 games vs. the Tigers by more than 10 points since 2006.
· The Tigers are on a 3–7 ATS in Conference games.
· Seminoles head coach Fisher is10–03 straight up when facing an undefeated opponent including 10 consecutive wins.
· Since 1992 Florida State has been a 10+ point underdog only once in ACC play and that occurred in the 2005 ACC Cham*pionship game which saw the Seminoles, (+14.5,) upset #5 Virginia Tech by a score of 27–22.
