3 Unit Play Take #59 Nashville -120 over Colorado (9:05pm est):

Total mismatch here in the advanced stats between these two teams as Nashville comes in as a very solid team ranked #2 overall in Corsi for % this season. The Predators start their first of four games on the road here which should only increase their focus with this being the beginning of their trip. They easily outshot their last opponent by a 44-18 margin but ended up losing the game 4-1 to Winnipeg. This was the 5th time in the last 6 games that the Predators have had more shots on goal than the opposing team but Nashville has only managed to win just 2 of those last 6 games.

Colorado ranks dead last in the NHL this season in Corsi for %. The Avalanche beat Nashville about a month ago in the only game these two have had against each other this year. Colorado was outshot by 11 shots in that game but scored the deciding goal in the middle of the 3rd period to get the 1 goal win. This should only add more fuel to Nashville's fire coming into this one tonight. The Avalanche pulled off a big come from behind win in their last game as they managed to battle back from a 3-1 deficit to beat St. Louis 4-3 in overtime. The feeling here is that the Avalanche have been catching lots of breaks of late but won't here in this one.

7-Unit Play. Take #61 St. Louis (+110) over Anaheim (10:05) p.m., Friday, Jan. 8)

The Blues have now lost 4 straight games and history has shown that a visit to Anaheim isn't the ideal medicine for them to get back on track. St. Louis has dropped 9 straight in Anaheim and have only won 2 in their last 22 games at the Honda Center. If the Blues were to lose tonight it would be their longest losing streak in nearly two years. But this isn't the same Ducks team that we have seen over the last couple years either. Anaheim has struggled mightily trying to find ways to score this season. They are ranked 30th in goals per game only averaging 1.8. The Blues on the other hand average right around 2.5 per game and in my opinion have had some bad luck the past couple games. St. Louis is coming off back to back games in which they blew big leads and should have won easily. They allowed 3 unanswered goals in a 3-2 overtime loss to Ottawa on Monday then wasted a 2 goal lead against Colorado which also went into overtime on Wednesday. The Blues have outshot their opponents 150-127 during the 4 game slide and have been uncharacteristically giving up too many goals in the later periods. With Anaheim inability to score and the Blues due for a breakout game look for St. Louis to upset the Ducks tonight.

4-Unit Play. Take #60 Colorado (+110) over Nashville (7:05) p.m., Friday, Jan. 8)

Although I do believe that Ryan Johansen is a great pick up for Nashville I don't think he will be a factor tonight. The Av's still have the stronger team on offense and are playing at a much higher level now than they were in the beginning of the season. The team is 3-2 in their last 5 games only losing to the Flames and Blackhawks. Colorado beat the Blues, Kings and Sharks over the stretch and have had a brutal schedule. Any team in this league would lose at least two (or more) of these games if given the same scenario. The Av's understand that they are 2 points behind Nashville in the standings and I like the way Varlamov is stepping up in between the pipes. The Av's already beat the Predators in Nashville this season where they won 3-2. Colorado is 5-1 in their last 6 against the Central division and the home team is 4-1 in the last 5. Look for the Av's to win tonight in Colorado.

2-Unit Play. Take #54 Carolina (-140) over Columbus (7:05) p.m., Friday, Jan. 8)

The Hurricanes record over the last ten games is at a dismal 4-4-2 but I like what they have been doing on the ice over the stretch. The Canes have addressed their defensive issues and are holding teams to 1.8 goals per game right now. During these ten games they have only lost to one team by more than 1 goal which happen to be the first game of the ten on Dec. 18th against the Panthers. Over their last 7 games they have beaten NJ, Chicago and Washington, lost in OT twice and only have 2 regular game losses. The Blue Jackets just got rid of Ryan Johansen who has been one of the only consistent pieces they have had over the course of the NHL season. In the Blue Jackets last 6 games they have given up 24 total goals and are 3-7 on the road in their last ten games. Carolina is playing better right now and has the stronger squad. Look for the Canes to win at home tonight.

6 Unit Play. Take #869 Oklahoma City -14.5 over LA Lakers (10:35 p.m., Friday, January 8 ESPN)
Last night the defense of the Lakers providing us with another NBA winner and tonight I see the Lakers defense giving up points at will. When OKC has Durrant and Westbrook on the floor they are tough to beat at home or on the road and tonight I see both having big game in Staples Center. OKC has had two days off since they beat up Memphis at home 112-94 while last night the Lakers used tons of energy to make a great come back in Sacramento. Too much offense from OKC and Westbrook playing in front of his Cali friends I see a big game from him tonight. The Lakers are 5-15 ATS against Northwest division teams and the last 4 meetings between these two teams OKC has covered all 4 games.

NHL: Thursday night we dropped our 8-Unit Play (thanks San Jose) but Friday we go for 11 out 15 NHL Winners. We have hit 16 out 19 5-Unit or Higher Plays in the NHL and Friday night (3-Unit Play) we cash more NHL tickets. I will take the home underdog tonight and look for the upset. This is a very good Oakland team. They nearly beat Michigan State and played Virginia tough on the road. This team also had a win over Washington on the road. The Grizzlies can score in bunches and are averaging 88 points per game over their last six games. They won't lose two straight road games. Valparaiso has struggled on the road. They are just 3-3 in their last four games on the road and this team can struggle to score points. Valparaiso is more of a defensive team and that won't bode well for them tonight. Oakland is 6-0 ATS in its last six games against Valpo and has had their number. The underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings. The Grizzlies are 13-4 ATS at home and they are 23-8 ATS in their last 31 overall. Take the points
