8 Unit Play Take #51 New York Rangers -105 over New York Islanders (7:05pm est):

The New York Islanders are a team that's dealing with a much bigger injury situation than the betting markets realize. The Islanders lost key defensemen Johnny Boychuk about 2 weeks ago and since his loss they've been a mess on defense allowing nearly 35 shots and 4.4 goals per game in the first five games without him. They dropped 3 of their first 4 games without him and were crushed in the three defeats by combined 13-3 scores. They needed 6 goals to get their only win of the four with a 6-5 victory over Dallas. They got a much needed win last game over Columbus which should help us here as it should take the sense of urgency off the Islanders coming into this game. Don't get too excited about that win either as it came over a Blue Jackets team with fewest points overall in the NHL this season. Keep in mind also that Boychuk leads the Islanders in +/- on the season. Making things even tougher on the Islanders here is the fact they lost another key defensemen in Travis Hamonic also a week ago. This is a team who is dealing with some big injuries and struggling because of it.

This is an intense battle between these two rivals which means there's little doubt that the Rangers will be fired up for this one especially after losing their only other head to head match-up with the Isles this season. The Rangers also come in with the much better goalie here between these two teams. They've been a solid team since coming back from the Christmas break. They've went 3-2 their last 5 games with one loss coming in overtime against a good Washington team and the other defeat they lost to the hottest team in hockey the Florida Panthers despite holding a 40-20 shots on goal edge in the game. The recent play and the injury situations of both these teams currently should mean that this line should be at least another 30 cents higher than it is. I usually don't find edges this big this late in the NHL season but I think the main reason is because the betting markets in all sports struggle with if and how to price injuries to non-superstar players and it's obviously not being factored in any or with enough weight here in this one.

Take the New York Rangers here. My NFL card comes out later today and it's one you need to get aboard as I'm having my best pro football ever this year. I'm also 16-7 in my last 23 top plays for each week the last 23 weeks in the NFL dating back to last season. No one has been better either with their big plays in football the last two years and I will have one today and be announcing that as soon as I get the key injury information so stay tuned. 2-Unit Play. Take #716Michigan State (-8) over Iowa (7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
It's a revenge game for one of the best teams in the country. Michigan Stategot demolished down in Iowa on Dec. 29 without Denzel Valentine. Not its timefor the return game and I think it could get ugly. Michigan State is almostunbeatable in the Izzone, and when you give them extra motivation they can playout of their minds. Michigan State has won its last two games by 25 and 27points, respectively, and I think they will jump the Hawkeyes here. Iowa's onlyroad game in league play was a bizarre, fluke win at Purdue. The Hawkeyes weredown 17 points at the half in that one (before a ridiculous 50-point secondhalf) and I see a similar situation here (minus the comeback). Michigan Statebeat Iowa by 14 points on the road and by 10 points at home last year. The lastthree times the Spartans have hosted Iowa, since 2011, they have won by 10, 34and 19 points. The Spartans are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 against the Hawkeyesand I think they will bury the visitors here.

1-Unit Play. Take #735Middle Tennessee State (-3) over Charlotte (7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
Mark Price's Charlotte team is definitely improving. Just a cursory glance overtheir final scores over the past month shows that. But they still aren't up toMTSU's level and I think the Blue Raiders have too much depth, balance andfirepower. Charlotte is a team that is still learning to play together. MiddleTennessee is a group of guys, 10-deep, that all know their roles and how toplay off one another. I'll go with that cohesiveness.

2-Unit Play. Take #737UL-Lafayette (-7.5) over Georgia Southern (7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
Georgia Southern is one of the worst teams in the Sun Belt and, really, in thecountry. They lost all five starters and their five best players from a reallygood team last year and their replacements have not been up to snuff. TheEagles only have three wins over D-I schools this year and there's a reasonthey are this big of a home underdog. Lafayette was supposed to be a team thatthreatened to win this league. They have been awful to start to the season. Butnow that they've dug themselves a hole I think they are in a position wherethey are getting desperate. Southern is the lowest-ranked team that UL-L hasplayed this year and I think that they are going to lay the wood.

1-Unit Play. Take #760Arizona (-13.5) over Washington (9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
Arizona got swept up in L.A. last week. You think they are pissed off aboutthat - because I do. Washington is in a letdown spot after an overtime winagainst their rivals, Washington State. Now they have to travel to Tucson toface an angry, focused, motivated Arizona team that is going to rally aroundthe fact that they lost their leading scorer. Everything about this reeks of ablowout for the home team.

2-Unit Play. Take #766Utah (-4.5) over Oregon (10 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
Because they haven't played a home game against real competition in awhile itis easy to forget how good this Utah team is at home. They go apeshit on peoplein their own gym. And after dumping two of their first three Pac-12 games Ithink that they are ready to unload on an Oregon team that is much, much betteron its own floor than it is on the road. The Ducks have only played three roadgames this year - and they have lost all three, including getting blown out atUNLV and at Oregon State. Utah is better than either of those teams and theywill be very motivated tonight.

2-Unit Play. Take #771Pepperdine (-2) over Santa Clara (10 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
I couldn't believe how poorly this veteran Pepperdine team had played out ofthe gate. But they showed some life last week with a big upset win over St.Mary's and I think that momentum will carry into this game against undermannedSanta Clara. This is one of the most experienced teams in the league and theycould be a sleeper team to nab one of the byes for the top seeds if they canget on a rush. But that means taking care of business against overmatchedopponents like the young Broncos.

1-Unit Play. Take #781Pacific (+19) over St. Mary's (11 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
St. Mary's started the year 12-0 ATS. If you bet against them every game therest of the season you should make money, because the books are going to havethe numbers jacked up on them. Pacific only lost at Arizona by 18 and at BYU by14 and this Pacific team is better than its record shows.

2-Unit Play. Take #783California (-3.5) over Stanford (11 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
No bet against Stanford is a bad bet because Stanford sucks. They fluked outwins over Utah and Oregon State, but this team isn't any good. We cashedagainst them with Oregon over the weekend and I'm going right back againstthem. They are home underdogs in this rivalry series for a reason and Cal coulddemolish them tonight. The Golden Bears have lost back-to-back games and Ican't see them losing three in a row. Cal is the much more talented, moreexperienced, more balanced team here. Their guards will weather the storm fromthe crowd and Cal will seal this one with FTs.

1-Unit Play. Take #793East Tennessee State (+1) over Samford (8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
I think the wrong team is favored here. I'm a big fan of this ETSU team thisyear and I think they may still be undervalued.

I'm a sucker for Belmont. But this line jumped off the page at me because itwas so high. This is not the same caliber Murray State team that we've seen thelast three or four years. They have a weaker coach, weaker players, and they arestill terrible on the road. Belmont will be way up for this game. And theirlack of success ATS over the past few weeks belies the fact that they should bethe best team in the Ohio Valley. Belmont has only played five home games thisyear. They've won them all and shot the ball well while doing it. Great hometeam + Terrible road team + Spread meant to trap the public = solid value.

1-Unit Play. Take #805Morehead State (-6) over SIU-Edwardsville (9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14)
Morehead State is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 league games and 9-3 ATS in their last12 road games.

Montana is one of the top teams in the Big Sky and they are capable of justhammering Northern Colorado here. Montana has only played two teams rated 300or lower - both on the road - and they won by six points and by 17 points. Ithink they can do the same here against UNC team that's gotten rolled at homeby teams like Idaho, Denver, Austin Peay and Maryland-BC - all teams much worsethan Montana.
