    Steve's Golf Picks

Martin Laird (62/1) - The big Scot is actually a resident in Scottsdale, Arizona and has enjoyed some excellent success close to home. Laird was the 54 hole leader here last year but unfortunately for him collapsed on the 71st hole of the tournament. He finished T5 after that mess of a hole, which can be listed alongside these other great finishes here (2014 - T19, 2011 - T3). Laird is very long off the tee (40th on Tour with an avg drive of 301 yards) and great out of the sand (23rd). He is also coming off a T8 at the Farmers.

Charles Howell III (85/1) - We go back to the well with Howell III this week. He has started this season on fire (7/8 finishes have been in the Top 17) and his game looks terrific. He is very long off the tee (23rd) and his strokes gained through putting is actually 34th (has been his weakness for much of his career). Howell III loves this event as he has 6 Top 25’s over his career including a T6 last year and a T4 in 2010.

Kevin Kisner (32/1) - This guy is simply on fire. He is first in All Around ranking on the PGA Tour and that has plenty to do with the fact that he hasn't finished outside of the Top 9 in his last 4 tournaments. The South Carolina native is one of the best putters on Tour (4th in Putting Average) and is 3rd in Total Driving. The combination of those two stats usually account for plenty of birdies, exactly what he will make this week.

Brooks Koepka (18/1) - Let’s keep this simple. Defending Champ (which we picked last year) and has out of this world length. Also started the year with a T3 at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Has to be taken.

Brendan Steele (60/1) - An interesting pick with Steele. He seems to appear when the score goes very low, probably why his history here is very solid (2012 - T5, 2013 - T6, 2014 - T6, 2015 - T26). He had a T3 this season at the CIMB Classic and has won once on Tour before. Steele has the length for this course as he ranks 26th for Driving Distance. The key for Steele this week will be the flat stick, as it has been the only thing that has held him back in his career.

Ryan Palmer (35/1) - We all know why we love Palmer when the winning score is going to be very low. He is one of the worlds greatest putters and makes birdies with the best of them. Palmer finished T2 here last season and was 5th here in 2013. Take him with confidence.

                    7-Unit Play. Take #735 UT-Arlington (-4.5) over Georgia Southern (7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4)

Arlington is the play in this one. They may be getting back leading scorer Kevin Hervey for this game. If Hervey plays this line will shoot up to at least 6.0. And even then I see this one as a blowout. If Hervey doesn't play I still think that the Mavericks are clearly the better team in this one. They have struggled while losing three straight and four of five. But this team started the year 13-2 and has wins over Ohio State and Memphis. Those games were both on the road. So if they can win in Columbus they can win tonight in Statesboro! Georgia Southern is just 8-12 and they are coming off a road win at Arkansas State. This is a very young team and they have not won two games in a row all season long. Georgia Southern is 5-0 ATS in its last five games but I don't think they are good enough to keep that streak going against one of the top teams in the conference. UT-Arlington is 33-16 ATS after a loss and 16-7 ATS after a loss against the spread. The Eagles are just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games and I think that this one will be one-sided. Lay the points.

                    3-Unit Play. Take #754 Northwestern (-8) over Minnesota (8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4)

Minnesota is rebuilding and they are struggling through a terrible Big Ten season. Northwestern is a team that is still trying to work its way into the NCAA Tournament. They have never been! The Wildcats already beat Minnesota by 25 points on the road back on Jan. 16 and have won four of the last five meetings in this series both SU and ATS. Minnesota has yet to win a game in 2016 and is just 1-14 in their last 15 games overall. The Gophers have played tough in their last few games and have avoided getting blown out. But I think that Northwestern will win big here. Northwestern has lost five straight games. But they have played a really tough schedule. They lost their last home game by 31 points and I think they will turn that around here with a double-digit win.

                      4 Unit Play. Take #761 Colorado +10 over Oregon (9:00p.m., Thursday February 4 FOX1)
Really confused on this number tonight in Eugene, Oregon! These two teams played in mid-January in Boulder, Colorado and the Buffs were -1 at home and tonight the Oregon Ducks are -10 at home. First place in the PAC-12 is n the line tonight and I believe this number is way too high. Colorado has played Oregon tough since joining the conference and tonight I see the Buffs hanging around and making this game close from the start. Colorado is 5-1 ATS against Conference opponents and whomever this game they win by 6 points or less. Hurry up and grab this +10 because I don't see this number staying around long.

2 Unit Play. Take #771 Over 142.5 Gonzaga at Loyola Marymount (10:00p.m., Thursday February 4)
These two teams played each other late December and the Gonzaga Bulldogs blew up LMU winning 85-62. LMU defense as of late has been giving up points at will and their last 4 games they are giving up 79.5ppg. One of the main reasons why we like this over because last month BYU racked up 91 points at Gersten Pavilion and if Gonzaga can control the tempo we should see tons of points tonight being scored

                        3-Unit Play. #715 Take William Mary (-1) over Northeastern (7 p.m., Thursday, February 4)

The Tribe handled Northeastern by 18 in the first meeting. This one won't be a different result, even if only by a lesser difference. The Huskies might not have their best player Quincy Ford, so the only thing he'll do is make it not a one-sided affair. William Mary is just a different class than most of the CAA this year, and they'll take care of business here.

                        3-Unit Play. #793 Take IPFW (+2.5) over South Dakota (8 p.m., Thursday, February 4)

Similar to the above play, IPFW is simply the better team. They whooped South Dakota by 20 in the first meeting, and these two are just on opposite ends of the spectrum in the league. IPFW are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games while South Dakota are 3-7 SU in their last ten overall. More of the same from the Mastodons as they continue their conference success.

                        3-Unit Play. #761 Take Colorado (+10) over Oregon (9 p.m., Thursday, February 4)

We cashed the Buffs at home when they beat Oregon in a close game last month, and we expect CU to give them to return the favor and make it a close game in Eugene. The Ducks have been in cruise control the last month or so, but the Pac 12 is just too competitive, too deep for me to think that they won't slip up sooner or later. And even if they don't lose tonight, I can't see them blowing out a very good Buffaloes team. Colorado has covered three straight and five of their last six games in the league. I see a very close, back-and-forth game with the points holding up in this one.

                        6-Unit Play. #769 Take Hawaii (+1.5) over Santa Barbara (10 p.m., Thursday, February 4)

Past Hawaii teams would be good for home wins on the island but never stood for much on the road. Not this bunch. This is the best Warriors team perhaps in the last 10-15 years. They are not just a legit mid-major coming from the Big West, but this is a team to make some moves come March. We take them off their first league loss of the year while fading UCSB off a big win. The Gauchos are coming off a 16-point road win at Irvine. Irvine and Hawaii are by far the best two teams in the league with a combined record of 33-9. Santa Barbara is 9-11 on the year, and I can't see how a team has been this average and inconsistent is going to be capable of another big win. Hawaii already won the first meeting by eight, and here they make it a season sweep. The Warriors lost by 14 at home over the weekend in a game they shot extremely poorly in. Santa Barbara is scoring just 63 points at home this year, and with Hawaii averaging 80 points, the door is open for the more superior offense to take control of this game and dictate the pace. This is a big bounce back spot for Hawaii here. They don't lose two in a row, just the same as Santa Barbara can't make it two league upsets in a row. This spot is made for a confident road win for the Warriors. 76-70 in their favor.
