Texas Tech Red Raiders at Arizona State Sun Devils
Last night’s Louisville/Syracuse could be a lesson early in this college football season; if it screams over then it’s screaming it for a reason. Tonight in the desert we have one of those matchups. Kliff Kingbury’s Red Raiders enter Tempe after demolishing FCS Stephen F. Austin, 69-17. Todd Graham’s squad comes in similar circumstance with his Sun Devils and their 44-15 thrashing of Northern Arizona. Neither team opened the playbook up much but when they did it was productive, so it’s hard to judge from that. But a little tidbit, Texas Tech passed for 666 yards while Arizona State allowed 369 in the air to their FCS counterpart. Even if this game is one-sided with 1 team scoring 50, I don’t see the other scoring less than 30 and that’s the mathematical situation, that it boils down too. PICK: Over 79.5 – 4 Units
BYU Cougars at Utah Utes
The Holy War – these two teams absolutely hate each other! Last year they didn’t meet until the Las Vegas Bowl where Utah was leading 35-0 with over 4 minutes’ left in the 1st Quarter due to 5 straight BYU turnovers. However, that is all that the Utes would score hanging on for a 35-28 victory. The Utes are seeking to win they’re looking to win six straight in the series but it’s tough to knock a solid Utah team at home. Whittingham has the coaching experience against BYU first-year coach, but I just trust Whittingham in this situation, especially against a first-year coach, Kalani Sitake. On defense the Utes were the only Power 5 conference team to post a shutout. A shutout is impressive, no matter the opponent. On offense I came away very impressed with, I liked what I saw from the Utes junior quarterback Troy Williams who threw for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns and junior running back Troy McCormick had an impressive 110 all-around yards’ effort in his comeback after missing last season after missing all of last season with a knee injury. Utes win a hostile atmosphere. PICK: Utah Utes -3 – 3 Units
Florida Atlantic Owls at Miami Hurricanes
This play is based on 2 meetings:
- 2015 – FAU made it a game with it tied 20-20 in the 3rd Quarter. Miami flexed its muscle and scored the next 24. 44-20.
- 2013 – This game was played in Miami and quarterback Brad Kaaya had yet to arrive. Hurricanes win 34-6.
Kaaya is considered by many to be the top QB prospect in this year’s draft. With Mark Richt now at the helm there is a different feeling in Coral Gables. So at FAU they win with a lesser team by 24. Before Kaaya arrived they won by 28 at home – you see the pattern – especially following the 70-3 thrashing they gave Florida A&M in the opening game compared to 41-7, Kaaya’s freshman campaign. PICK: Miami Hurricanes -25 – 3 Units
