Reason For Pick:
On paper, this is a very good matchup for Charlotte. The 49ers are doing a phenomenal job of taking care of the basketball. They've had single digit turnovers in each of the last three games, including an overtime loss in one of those. Considering Appalachian State isn't good at forcing turnovers, and are not good at ball security themselves, this should be a game where the 49ers get some extra possessions. Also, worth noting Charlotte is knocking down nearly 80% of their free throws and is hitting a remarkable 47% on threes, and this sets up well against a Mountaineers squad that hasn't defended anything well. Mark Price called the Davidson game on Saturday the 49ers worst offensive performance since he became the head coach last season. If that means they work harder for good shots tonight, it should result in a comfortable win. I'm going to give the points here with Charlotte.

Big Ticket: Take Minnesota – Utah UNDER (#509-510)
There have been two previous meetings between Quin Snyder and Tom Thibodeau as NBA head coaches, the two Jazz – Bulls games from the 2014-15 campaign. Neither team reached 100 in either meeting: 97-77 and 97-95 final scores, both games staying well Under the total.
These teams met four times last year. Three of the four meetings stayed Under the total by big margins – the loser was held to 90 or less in all four games, and the winner failed to reach 100 in three of them. These are not two teams or two coaches looking to run up and down the floor.
And that’s exactly what we can expect tonight – a slower paced, defensive minded game. In this pointspread range, there’s a decent chance we end up with a tight, one possession game in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, great for depressing scoring without late ‘scramble’ points.
This total is set based on full season numbers. But looking at Minnesota’s full season numbers right now is an exercise in ‘betting bad numbers’. Thibodeau is a defensive guy, but the T-wolves defense has been spotty in early season play – no surprise there. In their first ten games of the season, Minnesota allowed more than 100 points eight times while going 7-3 to the Over.
But as Thibodeau has gotten his players more comfortable on the defensive end, the T-wolves numbers have changed fairly dramatically in recent weeks. They’ve held four of their last six foes under 100; 5-1 to the Under during that span. This team is head and shoulders better on the defensive end of the court compared to where they were a month ago, but the markets haven’t made the appropriate adjustments……yet!
The T-wolves are coming off a rough defensive game, lit up for 56% shooting and 115 points by the Golden State Warriors. Yet even in that game, their defensive improvement clearly showed, holding a Warriors team that had 47 assists in their previous home game, but only 25 assists against Minnesota. I’m very interested in taking the T-wolves Under following a game in which they allowed 115, even if it was against the Warriors.
Utah, too, had some early season defensive deficiencies, but not lately! The Jazz are coming off a truly stifling defensive effort against the Hawks, holding Atlanta to 68 points on 31% shooting. Low post stud Rudy Gobert: “I’m pleased with the way my teammates played. I try to push them to focus on defense. When we’re playing good defense, it’s hard to beat us. Tonight, we did our best defensive game of the year.”
That game was not an aberration in any way. The Jazz rank #2 in the NBA in defensive efficiency, and their D is even better now that point guard George Hill is back on the floor following an injury absence. Expect a slow paced defensive struggle from start to finish in a game worthy of Big Ticket status. Big Ticket: Take the Under.

The set-up: Danny Manning’s first two seasons at Wake were a bust, as the Demon Deacons went 13-19 and 11-19. Two key players are gone from last year’s squad in the 6-9 Devin Thomas (15.6 & 10.2) and guard Miller-McIntyre (9.5-4.5-4.0) but Manning saw potential in this year’s group. So far he’s been right, as Wake is 5-1, losing to only Villanova, the defending champs who are loaded again this year. Former Duke player and assistant coach Chris Collins led Northwestern to a school record 20 wins last season (but still no “Big Dance” appearance) and the Wildcats have opened 3-2 this year.

Wake Forest: Sophomore Keyshawn Woods is a welcome addition (Charlotte transfer), scoring 13.7 PPG and adding 4.2 RPG. He joins PG Crawford, who is averaging 13.8 PPG and a team-leading 6.3 APG.Two returning big men have shown excellent promise already, as 6-10 sophomore Collins has averaged 18.8 & 8.5 plus 6-10 junior Mitoglou has added 10.0 & 6.7.

Northwestern: Manning knows that the Wildcats won't be pushovers in this first-ever meeting with the Demon Deacons. Tre Demps (15.7) is gone from last year’s Northwestern team, as is the 7-0 Olah (11.4 & 5.6) but the 6-7 Law (17.8 & 5.0) and guard Lindsey (15.3 & 5.0) have combined to increase their scoring by 19.8 points per game over last season .PG McIntosh returns and he’s added 12.7 PPG and 5.0 APG. Helping to make up for the loss of Olah is the 6-8 Pardon, averaging 7.7 & 7.3.

The pick: Northwestern is just 3-2 but the Wildcats own a win over No. 21 Texas and narrow losses to Butler and Notre Dame, by a total of six points! Northwestern is 3-0 SU at home, outscoring opponents 88.7 to 67.0 PPG. The Wildcats are an 8* play.

We are pleased to start the college basketball season at 14-6 (70%) for +$4460 (8-1 in all basketball as we are on a fantastic run in the NBA as well as we are 7-1 with all Basketball step-outs of late). We could not be happier and pleased for clients and we look to try to bump that up to 15-6 for +$5160. Note, that this is a solid selection here and that we don't really mind that Minnesota is undefeated. This isa n FSU team that has immense talent that has gone underrated coming into this year. Leonard Hamilton has a good crop of players and though FSU has just 1 less win than Minnesota, take a look at FSU's quality efforts in their first 6 games. This is a team that beat Illinois by 11 who is a top 100 team, lost to Temple by just 3 points and beat two decent teams in Iona and Winthrop. Note, this is a Minnesota team that is on a big bounce-back from last year and certainly has a lot to prove but it won't be in this game as this is a bad matchup for them. Outside of the Arkansas win, Minnesota has struggled to show quality defensive prowess as this will be not only the toughest offense they have had to face, but also the toughest defense and we suspect that makes the difference here. Our models show a double-digit differential and a blowout and a decent public fade to boot.
