7-Unit Play. Take #766 East Tennessee State (-7) over Furman (7 p.m.)
There is really a lot to unpack in this game. But at its core this game sets up very similarly to the Florida and Marquette games that we cashed in on last night. The first motivating factor here is that East Tennessee State is playing for first place in the Southern Conference. They are half a game back with just three games to play so this one is huge. The second motivator is that ETSU has revenge. They got bombed up in Furman in mid-January, playing one of their worst games of the year. ETSU shot 37.9 percent from the field and were 3-for-21 (14.3 percent) from 3-point range. Furman, on the other hand, shot nearly 50 percent and won by 13. ETSU is in the Top 10 in the country in field goal percentage (49.3), so for them to be held below 38 percent is ridiculous. I don't think Furman is going to win this game and as such I don't think they will cover. Third, this is senior night for ETSU, which is one of the most experienced teams in the country with six seniors playing their final home game. These guys are absolutely going to max out. Fourth, Furman is in a bit of a letdown spot. They just took on UNC-Greensboro at home in a huge game on Saturday - and got slaughtered by 21 points in front of their home crowd. That will rattle someone's confidence. Finally, this is just a matchup thing. Furman is a tiny team. They are a bunch of little dudes that just run around and chuck threes. That tends to work a lot better in your own gym. ETSU has the best frontcourt in the league with two 6-9 forwards and one 7-foot center that are all fifth-year seniors that transferred in from other major conferences. Furman has just two guys on the roster taller than 6-6. This team is small and they won't be able to hold up against the extremely motivated home team.
