CFL Betting Recap - Week 9

              League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 4-0 SU in Week 9
-- Favorites went 4-0 ATS in Week 9
              -- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 SU record in Week 8
              -- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 ATS record in Week 8
-- The 'Under' went 2-1-1 in Week 9

              Analysis

It was a 'chalky' week in the CFL as all four favorites won straight up and against the spread. All four of the matchups were divisional battles and things got a little interesting in the competitive West as Edmonton suffered its first loss of the season while Calgary inched closer with a road victory.

Even though we saw three teams post 30-plus points on the scoreboard, the 'under' produced a 2-1-1 record in Week 9.

              Team Betting Notes

-- For the second straight week, British Columbia looked like a different team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. After getting embarrassed 41-8 at Saskatchewan in Week 8, the Lions were stifled 21-17 at home last Friday. It was the first time this season that BC had dropped back-to-back games. The 'under' has now cashed in three straight and is 6-3 overall.

-- Edmonton's chances of going undefeated this season were haulted on Friday as the club dropped a 33-26 decision at Winnipeg. The Eskimos were listed as short road underdogs and were catching points for just the third time this season. The 'over' connected in the setback and is now 4-1 in their last five games.

-- Hamilton (0-8) remained winless on the season as it suffered a 37-18 home loss to Ottawa on Friday. The Tiger-Cats actually held a 10-6 lead after the first quarter at Tim Horton's Stadium before getting outscored 31-8 over the final 45 minutes. The T-Cats haven't held an opponent under 30 points this season, which has helped the 'over' go 5-2-1. The team will be off in Week 10 and returning on Sept. 4 versus Toronto.

-- The Alouettes and Argonauts completed their home-and-home series on Saturday and Toronto earned the split at home. Montreal earned a 21-9 win at home in Week 8 but it was all Argos on Saturday as they cruised to a 38-6 victory. They led 35-0 at halftime but only a combined nine points were scored in the final 30 minutes, which helped the 'under' sweep the series. With the win, Toronto is back in first place of the East division.

-- The RedBlacks snapped their second three-game skid of the season on Friday with a road win over Hamilton. Bettors should note that Ottawa is now 4-0 ATS on the road this season despite going 1-3 SU.

-- The Blue Bombers extended their winning streak to four games this past Thursday with their 33-26 home win over previously unbeaten Edmonton. The club is 3-1 ATS during this run and is 6-2 overall versus the number, which is the best mark in the CFL. Winnipeg hits the road for back-to-back games over the next two weeks.

-- Saskatchewan was on bye in Week 9 but will be tested next Friday when its visits Edmonton, who is coming off its first defeat of the season.

                        Eric Schroeder

My free play for tonight is going to be on the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros staying Under the posted number.

IMPORTANT: As you know every single Run Line play and Total wager will automatically list the scheduled starting pitchers at the time of the wager, and I want you to be sure the following pitchers are the registered starters on your ticket when making your wager: Stephen Strasburg and Dallas Keuchel. If one or both of these pitchers is not going, this is a no-play.

Strasburg was fantastic in his return off the disabled list, and should be on top of his game tonight in Houston. After a first-inning home run, the San Diego-native settled in against the Padres and retired the next 10 he faced. He went on to sit down 13 of the next 14, while striking out eight Padres over six innings. I think the fireballer will be solid against the 'Stros.

Meanwhile, Keuchel - Houston’s ace left-hander - appears to have regained the form that made him the 2015 AL Cy Young winner. Spanning 13.2 innings over his past two starts, Keuchel has allowed just nine hits and one run. He won both games, and improved his record to 11-2 on the season.

In what could be a World Series preview, look for these two pitchers to duel to an under.

                        5* UNDER Nationals-Astros (Strasburg-Keuchel)

                          Now about this complimentary winner

My free winner for Thursday is on the Minnesota Twins over the Chicago White Sox, and I'm playing the boys from Minneapolis on the Run Line.

Since every MLB wager on a run line or total auto-lists pitchers, I want you to be sure the two pitchers on your ticket, when making this play, are Jose Berrios and Derek Holland. If they are not the pitchers of record when making your play, disregard this play.

Berrios is in after firinhg seven scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks his last time out, when he retired the last 13 batters he faced. He recorded a career-best 24 called strikes and struck out seven - the most strikeouts since he fanned seven in Boston on June 26. He is pitching well and is 2-0 in his last three starts.

Meanwhile, Holland has struggled terribly over his last two starts, during a season that has fallen well below his expectations. In those two outings, he's lasted just 4.2 innings - combined. In those two he allowed 14 runs on 13 hits, walking seven and striking out three putting his ERA at 6.07.

Take the Twins in a rout.

2* TWINS RUN LINE (Berrios over Holland)

My free play for Thursday is on the Cleveland Indians over the Boston Red Sox, and I want you listing the scheduled starters: Trevor Bauer over Chris Sale.

Boston's ace left-hander is looking to avenge a tough outing against the these same Cleveland Indians on Aug. 1, when he was tagged for eight hits and seven run over five innings. But it's not just that start, Sale has had his share of troubles against Cleveland during his career, going 5-7 with a 4.81 ERA in 17 starts.

With Bauer, we have a guy who has posted a 1.51 ERA in his last six starts, and has not lost since July 16. He is in after going 6 1/3 scoreless innings against the Kansas City Royals his last time out, striking out four and allowing seven hits to earn his 12th win of the season.

Take Cleveland at this ridiculous dog price and list both.

                            1* INDIANS (Bauer over Sale)

Thursday's comp play is the Yankees this afternoon to complete the sweep of the Tigers.

New York has gotten the lumber out through the first two games of this series, scoring 13 on Tuesday, and 10 more runs last night. Meanwhile, the Tigers have only been able to come up with 6 runs to counter.

Jaime Garcia is making his 4th start for New York, and he has not been all that effective, but his counterpart Michael Fulmer is working on erasing a 5 start losing skid. One of those starts came in New York against the Yankees where he was roughed up pretty good - 6 innings, 7 runs - 6 of them earned.

The Tigers sport just one win over their last 9, while the Yankees have won 7 of their last 9.

Go with New York to get the brooms out at Comerica Park!

                              2* N.Y. YANKEES
