The red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks seek their season-best eighth consecutive victory when they visit the Colorado Rockies on Friday in the opener of a three-game set. Arizona just recorded a three-game sweep over the Los Angeles Dodgers - the best team in the majors - and has won nine of its last 10 contests.

The Diamondbacks and Rockies have been the leaders in the National League wild-card race throughout the summer and Arizona currently possesses a 3 1/2-game edge for the right to host the winner-take-all game. Colorado has a 2 1/2-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for the second berth and is trying to get back on track after losing seven of its past 11 games. The teams split 12 meetings this season but the Diamondbacks have the confidence edge after smacking seven homers and scoring 21 runs while easily handling the Dodgers. "There's a lot of talk in the clubhouse about what's going on," Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters. "It's exciting times. (The Diamondbacks are) a good team and they've got some All-Star-caliber players. It's a good group, but you know what? They're saying the same thing about us."

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Taijuan Walker (7-7, 3.55 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Kyle Freeland (11-8, 3.81)

Walker was 0-4 over a 10-start span before allowing one run and four hits over 6 1/3 innings while beating San Francisco in his last turn. The 25-year-old is 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA in three 2017 starts against the Rockies and has a 2.77 ERA in four career outings. Walker has experienced difficulties with slugger Mark Reynolds, who is 4-for-8 with two homers and a double against him.

Freeland received a no-decision against the Atlanta Braves in his last turn when he gave up four runs and 10 hits over six innings. The 24-year-old rookie is winless in three starts since returning from a groin injury despite striking out 17 in 17 2/3 innings during the stretch. Freeland defeated the Diamondbacks on April 28 when he allowed one run and six hits over six innings.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Rockies All-Star CF Charlie Blackmon, who leads the NL in batting average (.339), batted .383 with eight homers in August.

    2. Diamondbacks All-Star 1B Paul Goldschmidt has four homers and 11 RBIs over the past six games and went deep 11 times in August.

    3. Colorado All-Star 2B DJ LeMahieu is 13-for-33 with three homers during a season-long eight-game hitting streak.

    PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 10, Rockies 7

Clayton Kershaw makes his return from a back injury just when the Los Angeles Dodgers could suddenly use a boost. Los Angeles has dropped a season-worst five consecutive games and is hoping Kershaw can halt the slide when it visits the San Diego Padres on Friday in the opener of a four-game set.

Kershaw has been sidelined for 5 1/2 weeks and the Dodgers plan to limit him to approximately 75 pitches against the Padres. "Obviously, with where we're at right now, I know that, not that he needs any more motivation or incentive," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters, "but I know that he's looking to put a stop to this little downslide." Los Angeles allowed 21 runs while suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks but is still 50 games above .500 despite the skid. San Diego is playing the fourth contest of an 11-game homestand and opened it by taking two of three from the San Francisco Giants.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (15-2, 2.04 ERA) vs. Padres RH Dinelson Lamet (7-5, 4.60)

Kershaw has continued his dominance against the Padres this season by going 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA in two starts. The 29-year-old is 16-6 with a 2.00 ERA and .191 batting average against in 31 career starts against the Padres. Kershaw is holding opponents to a .197 average this season but has served up a career-worst 18 homers.

Lamet received a no-decision against the Miami Marlins in his last turn when he gave up one run and four hits over six innings. The 25-year-old has allowed just 16 hits in 34 1/3 innings over his last six outings, giving up as many as four just once during the stretch. Lamet, who is facing the Dodgers for the first time, is 4-2 with a 3.98 ERA in seven home starts.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Dodgers SS Corey Seager (elbow) won't play in the field in the four-game series but will continue to be available for pinch-hitting duties.

      2. San Diego 1B Wil Myers, who is mired in a 17-game homerless drought, is batting .175 with two homers against the Dodgers this season.

      3. Los Angeles INF Logan Forsythe is 0-for-12 with six strikeouts over his past four games.

      PREDICTION: Dodgers 4, Padres 2

A tough week against a pair of teams from the American League East knocked the Seattle Mariners back in the AL wild card race, but a homestand is coming up that should help them gain back some ground. The Mariners kick off a nine-game homestand and a stretch of 19 straight against AL West opponents when they host the Oakland Athletics on Friday.

Seattle (66-68) is suffering through a five-game losing streak after dropping two at the New York Yankees and getting swept in a three-game set by the Baltimore Orioles while surrendering an average of seven runs. The Mariners made a move to fortify the rotation by bringing in veteran right-hander Mike Leake in a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, but they sit 4 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the race for the second AL wild card spot. The last-place Athletics spent their week helping another AL West opponent keep its wild card hopes strong by dropping three in a row to the Los Angeles Angels and will get more chances to impact the postseason races with upcoming series against Seattle, the Angels, Houston and Boston. Seattle will send Yovani Gallardo to the mound on Friday against Oakland left-hander Sean Manaea.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics LH Sean Manaea (9-8, 4.55 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Yovani Gallardo (5-10, 5.78)

Manaea snapped a string of six straight winless starts by holding the Texas Rangers to two runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings on Saturday. The Indiana native totaled just seven strikeouts in his last five starts after punching out 110 in 113 innings over his first 19 outings. Manaea is 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA in three starts this season against Seattle while totaling 16 strikeouts across 18 innings.

Gallardo is winless in five straight starts and took the loss in the last three while surrendering a total of 15 runs in 16 innings. The Mexico native issued five walks over 5 2/3 innings at the New York Yankees on Saturday while striking out four to mark the seventh time this season that he walked more than he struck out. Gallardo is making his fifth appearance of the season against Oakland and went 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA in the first four - three starts.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Mariners RHP David Phelps (elbow) was removed from Wednesday’s game and will undergo an MRI on Friday.

        2. Oakland C Josh Phelgley (oblique) is expected to come off the disabled list when rosters expand on Friday.

        3. Seattle RHP Felix Hernandez (shoulder) and LHP James Paxton (pectoral muscle) are both expected to throw off a mound this weekend.

        PREDICTION: Mariners 4, Athletics 3

The St. Louis Cardinals are hoping to revive their playoff hopes during this weekend’s four-game road series against the San Francisco Giants, and got off to a promising start with Thursday’s 5-2 victory. St. Louis heads into Friday’s contest six games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and five back of the Colorado Rockies for the second wild-card spot.

Randal Grichuk snapped a 3-for-26 skid with a two-run homer and Michael Wacha tossed six strong innings Thursday to lead St. Louis past a cellar-dwelling Giants team that has lost nine of its last 12 games. Tommy Pham is 10-for-21 with three home runs and eight RBIs during his six-game hitting streak for the Cardinals, who have not lost a series in San Francisco since Mike Matheny took over as manager in 2012. The Giants are giving third baseman Pablo Sandoval an extended look with an eye toward next season, but the veteran went 0-for-4 on Thursday and is batting .215 after going hitless in his last 23 at-bats. Shortstop Brandon Crawford finished his torrid August with two more hits Thursday and is 20-for-51 with three homers over the past 12 games.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Jack Flaherty (MLB debut) vs. Giants RH Johnny Cueto (6-7, 4.59 ERA)

The Cardinals are calling up Flaherty to make his major league debut in place of Mike Leake, who was traded to Seattle on Wednesday. The 21-year-old has split time between Double- and Triple-A this season, posting a 2.18 ERA with 147 strikeouts and 35 walks in 25 starts covering 148 2/3 innings. Flaherty was the 34th overall pick in the 2014 draft out of Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles.

Cueto is set to make his first start since mid-July after battling blister issues and a strained flexor tendon. The 31-year-old struggled in a minor-league rehab outing for Class-A San Jose last Sunday, allowing eight runs (five earned) and nine hits over 3 2/3 innings. Yadier Molina is 11-for-43 with two home runs against Cueto, who is 7-8 with a 3.75 ERA in 22 career starts against St. Louis, including 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in two outings last season.

          WALK-OFFS

          1. The Cardinals recalled RHP John Gant from Triple-A Memphis and designated LHP Kevin Siegrist for assignment after activating him from the 10-day disabled list.

          2. Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday because of flu-like symptoms but could return to start Sunday’s series finale.

          3. St. Louis is expected to promote RHP Sandy Alcantara from Triple-A Memphis prior to Friday’s game.

          PREDICTION: Cardinals 6, Giants 5
