Tonight's Winner and Rating: 40 Dime Fresno State
Line/Total: -17 points, as of 8 a.m. eastern.
Analysis: San Jose State might possibly be the worst team in college football. The Spartans defense is non-existent, and could very well end up one of the worst, statistically, in college football history. Fresno State should have this number covered by halftime. I actually feel bad for the coaching staff, as first-year coach first-year coach Brent Brennan is generally a nice guy and I believe has all intention of turning this program around. Problem I see, it's his first major college head coaching job, after six seasons as a receivers coach at Oregon State. He, too, is trying to build a chemistry with his team.
I'm much more confident in Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford, as he has an offensive mind, and will have his Bulldogs taking full advantage of this porous defense.
While I realize it's homecoming, I also recognize San Jose State's defense ranks 124th (out of 129) in the FBS rankings. The Spartans have the 126th-ranked rushing D, the 121st scoring D and rank 110th in team pass efficiency D.
Now I might think different if the Spartans could play offense, but this team hasn't scored more than 16 points in its last four games, including last week's 41-13 shellacking at UNLV. San Jose State has the 113th-ranked offense in the nation.
This won't be good for the Spartans, whatsoever. Lay the road chalk, as Fresno State rolls.
