Both teams are 4-1 so far this year but Tampa Bay has played the tougher schedule. Tampa’s only loss was to Florida at Florida in the second half of a home and home series to open the season. Since then they beat 3 playoff teams from last year. Washington (best record reg season last year), Pittsburgh the defending Champs and St. Louis. Detroits 4 wins 2 of them were against first year team the Vegas Golden Knights and 0-4 Arizona. That in itself is enough to line me up on Tampa Bay but Detroit is returning home off of playing a 4 game road trip which included 3 games in 4 nights. As in other daily sports fading teams returning home off of extended road trips is a favorable situation.

The first two games were pitching duels in a Ball Park that isn’t really a pitcher friendly ballpark. But tonight this pitching match up isn’t going to produce a pitchers duel. In fact I’m looking for the complete opposite here. Yes I know CC Sabathia was fantastic in his last start but he still was out of gas in the 5th inning. Being an elimination game he was on a shorter leash than usual in that game. I expect both managers not to make quick moves with pitchers so I expect runs off of both starters. In 10 road starts Charlie Morton has a ERA of 4.17 and a WHIP of 1.35. CC in his 13 Home starts has an ERA of 4.20 and and WHIP of 1.22. Neither pitcher has good numbers against the team they are facing tonight although both have limited starts against each team. My projections have a 6-4 or 6-5 type of game tonight.
