When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 14, 2017
Where: Kenan Memorial Stadium, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

        Preview: Virginia at North Carolina
        Gracenote
        Oct 11, 2017

Virginia looks to continue its best start in 10 years when it visits North Carolina on Saturday for the 122nd meeting between the ACC rivals. Behind three touchdown passes by Kurt Benkert and a solid defensive effort that allowed 255 total yards, the Cavaliers picked up a 28-21 win over Duke in their conference opener last week.

Their 4-1 opening marks the program's best since it began the 2007 campaign with a 7-1 record en route to a 9-4 finish. "Its just a new standard," senior receiver Doni Dowling told reporters. "We're trying to set a new standard for Virginia football. When you hear Virginia football we want there to be a ring to it." The Tar Heels are headed in another direction with three consecutive losses - the latest a 33-10 setback against Notre Dame in which they had three turnovers and 10 penalties. North Carolina has won the last seven meetings, including a 35-14 victory in Charlottesville a season ago.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, RSN. LINE: Virginia -3.5

ABOUT VIRGINIA (4-1, 1-0 ACC): The Cavaliers are thriving on third down on both sides of the ball, finally getting the results of what head coach Bronco Mendenhall called "a huge point of emphasis" when he arrived to run the program last year. They enter the week's action ranked 10th in the country with a 49.4 percent success rate on third down after converting 8-of-18 against the Blue Devils, and Mendenhall's defense is 11th-best at 26.8 percent. Benkert is tied for second in the ACC in TD passes (13) and fellow senior Andre Levrone ranks third in the country in yards per catch (25.1).

NORTH CAROLINA (1-5, 0-3): The Tar Heels have produced 34 points during their three-game slide - a troubling trend for an offensive mind such as head coach Larry Fedora, whose unit led the nation in yards per play just two years ago. "I take a lot of pride in what we do," Fedora told reporters. "So I do get frustrated. I want our guys to be perfect and I want to put them in a position where they can be perfect. Understanding that we'll never get that, but what we're seeing right now is just a whole multitude of issues that we've got to get cleaned up." Freshman Chazz Surratt completed a season-low 45.2 percent of his passes last week and threw an interception for the third straight game.

        EXTRA POINTS

        1. Benkert was held to 126 passing yards - just four more than his season low - and no TDs in last year's loss to the Tar Heels.

        2. Cavaliers RB Jordan Ellis leads the ACC with 103 carries and is eighth in yards with 408.

        3. Virginia is eighth in FBS in time of possession (33:48), while North Carolina is 119th (26:02).

PREDICTION: Virginia 24, North Carolina 20

                Preview: Purdue at Wisconsin
                Gracenote
                Oct 11, 2017

Wisconsin might already have passed the most difficult test on its Big Ten West schedule, but bigger goals remain. The sixth-ranked Badgers will try to stay undefeated and stay on course for a spot in the Big Ten championship game when they host Purdue on Saturday.

Wisconsin earned a 38-17 win at Nebraska last weekend and will play only one ranked team the rest of the way -- home against No. 16 Michigan on Nov. 18 -- but is focused on continuing to improve. "I still think we have things to work on," running back Jonathon Taylor said, according to USA Today. "But as you can see, we're a very good team. We still have a way to go but once we become that complete team, we're going to do some special things." The Boilermakers are on the uptick under first-year head coach Jeff Brohm and own a defense strong enough to overcome four turnovers from the offense in a 31-17 win over Minnesota last week. Purdue is no stranger to top-level competition and will be playing its third top-20 opponent this season against the Badgers after home losses to Louisville and Michigan.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: Wisconsin -16.5

ABOUT PURDUE (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten): The Boilermakers offense is still figuring itself out under Brohm, and quarterback David Blough could be in danger of losing his starting job after being replaced in last week's win. Blough started the last three games but was a combined 11-of-23 for 91 yards against Michigan and Minnesota and was replaced in the second half last week by sophomore Elijah Sindelar. Sindelar failed to establish himself in two starts last month but came on in relief against the Gophers and led Purdue to the win while completing 19-of-26 passes for 248 yards and a score.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (5-0, 2-0): The Badgers have a history of great running backs and are establishing another in Taylor, who rushed for 249 yards on 25 carries in the win at Nebraska. Taylor, who owns nine rushing TDs in his first five games, is the second running back in school history (Ron Dayne, 1996) to have multiple 200-yard performances as a true freshman. Taylor's efforts are helping the offense average 40.2 points and 257.6 yards on the ground.

                EXTRA POINTS

                1. Wisconsin's defense has allowed a total of 14 second-half points.

                        Preview: Vanderbilt at Ole Miss
                        Gracenote
                        Oct 12, 2017

There has been little to celebrate for Ole Miss this season entering Saturday’s home contest with Vanderbilt, but the play of quarterback Shea Patterson is one bright spot for the Rebels. Patterson starts the weekend tops in the SEC and ninth in the nation with 1,792 passing yards, fueling a Rebels’ passing attack that ranks eighth nationally coming into a matchup of two teams looking for their first SEC victory.

Patterson pointed to the Rebels’ 20 points after halftime in last week’s 44-23 loss at Auburn as a positive, telling reporters afterward, “I think we feel a lot better than we did last week coming out of the second half. So we’ll look to build on that momentum.” The Commodores also seek a better showing after being blasted 45-14 at home against Georgia last week. “It’s not the first time this team has seen adversity,” Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason told reporters Tuesday. “The confidence comes back quick with great leadership, which we have.” Since winning its first three games of the season, Vanderbilt has been outscored 142-38.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Ole Miss -3

ABOUT VANDERBILT (3-3, 0-3 SEC): Quarterback Kyle Shurmur has passed for 12 touchdowns, but the Commodores are last in the SEC and 126th nationally in total offense, averaging just 277 yards per game. Running back Ralph Webb, the school’s all-time leading rusher, has just 245 yards rushing (2.8 per carry) after finishing with 1,283 yards (5.1 per attempt) a season ago. The Commodores allow just 140.3 yards per game passing, but were gashed for 423 rushing yards last week against Georgia.

ABOUT OLE MISS (2-3, 0-2): Patterson passed for two touchdowns and 346 yards last week against Auburn and leads the conference in touchdowns (13) and passing yards per game (358.4). Receiver A.J. Brown averages 18.7 yards per catch and is tied for the team in receiving touchdowns (four), but the Rebels rank last in the SEC in rushing offense and next-to-last in time of possession. The Ole Miss defense has struggled, giving up 456.2 yards per contest (13th in the SEC; 110th nationally).

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. The Commodores average 76.7 rushing yards per game, while the Rebels average 76 per contest.

                        2. Ole Miss RB Jordan Wilkins finished with more than 100 yards of total offense for the second consecutive game against Auburn, recording 66 yards receiving and 65 yards rushing..

                        3. Vanderbilt broke a three-game losing streak in the series last season, scoring 31 unanswered points in a 38-17 home victory.

Auburn couldn't have asked for a better start to its conference schedule - but the real test begins this weekend, as the No. 11 Tigers kick off a three-game road trip with a visit to LSU. Auburn has racked up 144 points in three games to open SEC play, and will look for a similarly dominant offensive showing against an LSU team ranked inside the top 30 in points allowed per game.

Auburn's latest triumph - a 44-23 rout of Ole Miss - saw the Tigers rack up 561 yards of total offense while breaking out to a 35-3 halftime lead and cruising from there. Head coach Gus Malzahn was equally impressed with his team's defensive showing against the Rebels, saying after the game: "Our first defense held them to 10 points, and I think if we had kept the first defense in, then we could have held them to 10 points the whole game." That's what LSU hopes to accomplish this weekend after evening its SEC record with a thrilling 17-16 win over then-No. 21 Florida. "We wanted to have energy, be upbeat on the sideline, have some fun out there, have each other's back and get a win," quarterback Danny Etling said afterward.

ABOUT AUBURN (5-1, 3-0 SEC): Malzahn plans to give Kamryn Pettway more rest moving forward as the standout running back deals with lingering injuries that have limited him to 61 carries on the season - 34 coming in a one-sided win over Mercer. “You make the calls that you think are the best at that time,” Malzahn told reporters earlier this week. “You always have the ability to look back and say, 'Well, we probably should have rested him more.'” Fortunately for the Tigers, they haven't needed him - Kerryon Johnson has been sensational in relief with 504 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns, while Kam Martin has added 260 yards and a TD on just 32 carries.

ABOUT LSU (4-2, 1-1): Running back Derrius Guice made headlines with back-to-back 100-yard, two-touchdown performances to open the season, but is battling injuries that have limited his effectiveness since; he returned to action last week after missing the previous game against Troy, but had just 50 rushing yards on 17 carries against the Gators. Etling, who has thrown six touchdowns against just one interception in 2017, will need to be at his best against an Auburn pass defense limiting opponents to just 176.3 yards per game - 20th-fewest in Division I. LSU's pass-defense unit has been slightly better, allowing the 18th-fewest yards per game through the air (171.5).

                            EXTRA POINTS

                            1. Etling has exceeded 200 passing yards just once in six games this season.

                            2. Auburn prevailed 18-13 in last year's meeting between the teams.

                            3. Auburn QB Jarrett Stidham leads the SEC in completion percentage (71.2) and yards per attempt (9.7).

A pair of Big Ten teams looking to rebound from blowout losses meet Saturday afternoon when Northwestern visits Maryland. The Terrapins won their conference opener at Minnesota before suffering a 62-14 loss at Ohio State last week while amassing only 66 yards - their lowest total since 1960.

Max Bortenschlager, who was bumped into the starting role after injuries to the team's top two quarterbacks, had a grand total of 16 yards and was sacked more times (five) than he had completions (three). Bortenschlager was forced from the game after a hard hit in the third quarter and remains day-to-day, according to head coach DJ Durkin, which could give a start to preseason fourth-stringer Caleb Henderson. The Wildcats had three turnovers and junior quarterback Clayton Thorson continued to struggle in last week's 31-7 home loss to Penn State. Saturday will mark the first meeting between Northwestern and Maryland, which joined the Big Ten in 2014.

                                TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Northwestern -4

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten): Thorson has seven TDs and seven picks one year after posting 22 and nine, respectively, and star senior running back Justin Jackson has been slow to get going after three straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald cites issues along the offensive line as the primary culprit for the Big Ten's 11th-ranked scoring offense (25.6 points). "I don't have another solution because I'm trying to get five guys to play constantly," he said of the line. "When five guys emerge, then five guys will play."

ABOUT MARYLAND (3-2, 1-1): Henderson has attempted two passes - one this year and one in 2015 - and neither were completed, but he was on the field for a late, meaningless touchdown drive against the Buckeyes. Regardless of who is under center, he will lean heavily on the conference's third-ranked rushing attack (196.8 yards per game), which is led by Ty Johnson. The junior leads the Big Ten in yards per carry at 8.1 and has four of Maryland's 13 rushing scores, which ties the team for second in that category in the conference.

                                EXTRA POINTS

                                1. Fitzgerald began his coaching career as a defensive graduate assistant with Maryland in 1998.

                                2. Terrapins WR D.J. Moore had at least seven catches and a TD in each of his first four games before being held to two grabs with no scores against Ohio State.

                                3. Thorson needs 25 passing yards to pass Trevor Siemian (5,931) and seize fourth place on the program's all-time list.
