      Preview: Lightning at Red Wings

      Gracenote
      Oct 15, 2017

Nikita Kucherov hopes to continue his goal-scoring surge as the Tampa Bay Lightning begin a tough three-game road trip Monday, when they visit the Atlantic Division-rival Detroit Red Wings. Kucherov became the sixth player in the last 17 years and first since 2012 to score in each of his team’s first five games of the season Saturday, netting the winning goal as the Lightning knocked off St. Louis 2-1 for their third straight win.

Kucherov, who recorded a career-high 40 goals last season, has scored five and assisted on three others in the early going while playing on a line with captain Steven Stamkos and Vladislav Namestnikov. Kucherov notched three goals and five points in three games against Detroit last season as the Lightning swept the five-game set and extended their winning streak in the series to seven, including the 2016 postseason. Detroit is not the same team as the one that missed the playoffs for the first time in 26 seasons in 2016-17 as it has sprinted to a 4-1-0 start after getting four points from captain Henrik Zetterberg in Friday’s 6-3 win at Vegas. “He’s an unbelievable player and has been that for many, many years,” Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist told reporters of the 37-year-old Zetterberg. “It’s impressive what he still does.”

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet One, TVA, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (4-1-0): Brayden Point, who is in his second season in the NHL, has matched Kucherov with eight points in the first five games and been a key figure in all corners of the rink while skating with Ondrej Palat and Yanni Gourde. “Where the Stamkos line has probably got a little more dynamic to it, the Point line has probably got a little bit more lunch pail to it,” coach Jon Cooper told reporters. “They make you earn it every shift.” Andrei Vasilevskiy, who has been brilliant despite his modest .911 save percentage, has played in all five games thus far and likely will sit out either Monday’s contest or Tuesday at New Jersey.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (4-1-0): Veterans Zetterberg (three goals, four assists) and defenseman Mike Green (eight assists) are off to strong starts, but young forwards Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin also have played major roles. Mantha has recorded three goals and four assists, Larkin has collected six points and the duo leads the team with 15 shots apiece while rookie Martin Frk has added some punch with three tallies and an assist. Trevor Daley, a key offseason free-agent signing, has been a steadying influence with a plus-4 rating in the first five contests and fellow blue-liner Niklas Kronwall was plus-3 in his second game of the season at Vegas.

      OVERTIME

      1. Detroit D Danny DeKeyser (lower body), who has not recorded a point in three games, is questionable after missing the last two contests.

      2. Tampa Bay D Victor Hedman has scored 66 career goals and needs one to pass Dan Boyle for second on the franchise list among blue-liners.

      3. The Red Wings are 21-for-23 on the penalty kill, good for third-best in the league (91.3 percent) through Saturday's action.

PREDICTION: Red Wings 4, Lightning 3

Monday's ALCS Playoff Betting Preview And Odds: Astros at Yankees

Houston Astros at New York Yankees (HOU +115, NYY -125, O/U 8.5)

          Astros lead series 2-0

The margin of error in the first two games of the American League Championship Series was razor thin, with the Houston Astros managing to come out on top in each contest to take a commanding lead in the best-of-seven matchup. The New York Yankees will try to turn the tide in their favor when they host Game 3 on Monday.

The Astros earned 2-1 wins in each of the first two games, with Game 2's victory coming only after Jose Altuve scampered around the bases from first on a Carlos Correa's double and scored when Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez was unable to handle the relay throw from shortstop Didi Gregorius. "Both sides are really, really emphasizing staying in the game and just continuing to fight because it can shift in a heartbeat," Houston manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. "Just when you feel good about where you're at, it can shift back to momentum the other way. So it's postseason baseball at its best." Sanchez (0-for-7, five strikeouts) and Aaron Judge (1-for-7, three strikeouts) are enduring a tough series at the plate for New York, but the team has no plans to change its batting order. "I'm going to stick with the same lineup because things can turn really quickly," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters. "There's a lot of guys that struggle in the postseason. That's just what it is. If you just start moving people around trying to play a hot hand, it doesn't necessarily work."

          TV:
          8 p.m. ET, FS1

          INJURY REPORT:

Astros - CF J. Marisnick (Out For Season, Thumb), SP D. Paulino (Out For Season, Suspension), RP J. Gustave (Out For Season, Elbow).

Yankees - SP L. Severino (day-to-day, Shoulder), SP L. Cessa (Out For Season, Ribs), SP M. Pineda (Out For Season, Elbow).

          PITCHING MATCHUP:
Astros RH Charlie Morton (0-0, 4.15 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (0-0, 3.72)

Morton started the clinching game of the AL Division Series at Boston last Monday but did not factor in the decision, leaving after 4 1/3 innings. The New Jersey native surrendered seven hits and walked a pair but limited the damage to two runs in a game Houston went on to win 5-4. Morton earned a victory at New York on May 14, when he struck out 10 while allowing four runs on four hits and four walks in 5 2/3 frames.

Sabathia is coming off a performance in a clinching ALDS game as well and also lasted only 4 1/3 innings in Cleveland. The veteran registered nine strikeouts without walking a batter prior to his exit and was making his second ALDS start after working 5 1/3 solid frames in Game 2. Sabathia is 9-5 with a 4.46 ERA in 21 career postseason appearances - 20 starts - and is facing the Astros for the first time since posting a win in Houston on July 26, 2016.

          TRENDS:

          * Astros are 6-1 in their last 7 League Championship games.
          * Astros are 4-0 in Morton's last 4 starts.
          * Yankees are 1-10 in their last 11 League Championship games.
          * Yankees are 13-3 in Sabathia's last 16 home starts.
          * Over is 6-0 in Astros' last 6 games vs. a left-handed starter.
          * Under is 5-0 in Sabathia's last 5 starts vs. American League West.
          * Home team is 45-15 in Cederstrom's last 60 games behind home plate.

          CONSENSUS:
The public is siding with the home chalk Yankees at a rate of 62 percent and the Over is picking up 64 percent of the totals action.

Monday's comp play will be to play the Colts-Titans to land Over the total.

I know Indy is still without Andrew Luck, but Jacoby Brissett has been serviceable under center, and the Colts have played Over the total in each of Brissett's last 3 starts.

Indy is now 4-1 Over the total for the season, while Tennessee comes in with Overs played in 3 of their last 4 contests.

Marcus Mariota is bothered by a hamstring injury, but it looks like he is going to be able to answer the bell, so let's side with the Over to be the way to go in Nashville tonight.

Series numbers show 6 of the last 9 division showdowns landing Over the total, look for this one to land Over as well.

Well this game will be ugly from a quarterback standpoint. Andrew Luck is out, Marcus Mariota is dealing with hamstring issues and is questionable at best.

This may very well wind up being Brissett vs Cassel, naturally not a potential viewership explosion in a league where viewership is already down.

Well, normally you think with both quarterbacks potentially out it's a stone cold under potential, but not in this game. A look inside the numbers tells us all we need to know about betting this total. For the Colts, the over is 6-1 in the last seven in October, 6-1 in their last seven in week 6, 4-1 in their last five overall, and 4-1 in their last five on Monday Night.

For Tennessee, the over is 10-2-1 in their last 13 against teams with a losing record, 9-2 in their last 11 against AFC South, and 10-4-1 in their last 15 after a straight up loss.

So even with lousy, lackluster offenses, the fact that both defenses are complete Swiss cheese will make this game an easy over.

                                3* INDIANAPOLIS-TENNESSEE OVER
