NHL scoring has jumped up half a goal and Over bettors are cashing in
        Ashton Grewal

Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs are a big reason scoring is way up this season in the NHL. The Over is hitting at a 59 percent clip after the first two weeks of the season.

NHL scoring is up over half a goal per game this season compared to last and almost a full goal more than two seasons ago. That's been a boon for hockey bettors siding with the Over. NHL games are averaging 6.11 goals per contest entering Thursday night’s slate on the ice. Last year, games average 5.45 markers and 5.33 in the 2015-16 campaign.

The Over is cashing at a 59.34 percent win rate after the first 94 games of the regular season and that’s despite a dramatic increase in games with 6-goal totals.

There were no games with totals higher than 5.5 for all of the 2015-16 season and only seven games with six-goal or higher over/under lines in the 2014-15 campaign. Oddsmakers have already given 15 games a total of six goals and one a 6.5-goal number this season.

Here’s a quick look at the top Over teams in the NHL this season:

        Toronto Maple Leafs

        Over/Under record: 6-1

The Leafs are first in the league in goals scored and are surrendering over three goals per game to opponents. The average total goals scored in a Toronto game is an even eight after the club’s first seven contests.

The Leafs own the league’s second-best power play with a 30 percent success rate and second-year center Auston Matthews leads the Buds in scoring with six goals and four assists.

        Florida Panthers

        Over/Under record: 5-0

The Panthers are averaging 3.4 goals per game and are giving up about four every time they step on the ice. Florida is the fifth-worst penalty killing team in the NHL and starting goalie Roberto Luongo is carrying just a .901 save percentage.

        Minnesota Wild

        Over/Under record: 4-0

The Wild have only played four games so far this season but in that short sample size, we’ve seen the red light lit 30 times – 15 for the Wild and 15 for their opponents. Minnesota is in the Top 10 in goals for/against.

No. 1 netminder Devan Dubnyk owns a bloated 3.70 goals against average and an embarrassing 8.94 save percentage in three starts this season.

        Winnipeg Jets

        Over/Under record: 5-1

The Jets thought Steve Mason was going to be their starting goalie but backup Connor Hellebuyck is clearly outplaying his teammate. Winnipeg has surrendered 18 goals in the three games Mason’s started and only five in the three starts Hellebuyck’s been given.

NHL (7) PITTSBURGH PENGUINS VS (8) FLORIDA PANTHERS

            Take: (7) PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Reason: Florida enters tonight's contest at 2-3 and 0-3 on the road this season. They have allowed 20 goals in their five games (4.0 gaa). Pittsburgh enters play tonight at 4-2-1 in their seven games, scoring 25 goals and allowing 29. The Penguins are 7th in the league in scoring (3.6 gpg) and 30th in goals against (4.1). The Penguins have an amazing record against the NHL East Conference, posting a 75-35 mark their last 110. The Penguins are also 50-21 their last 71 games against a team with a losing record. The Panthers are just 4-10 against winning teams the last 14 games, 3-10 against the East Conference the last 13 games. In addition, the Panthers are just 7-21 the last 28 meetings with the Penguins. Take Pittsburgh.

Not a real huge fan of laying a big number n the road, but in the case of 4-2 Western Kentucky taking on 2-4 Old Dominion, I will make an exception.

This is not the same Hilltoppers team that used to run roughshod over foes back in the Jeff Brohm era, but they did cover their first game of the season last week in a 45-14 rout of a weak Charlotte team. They should be able to repeat that performance against the 2-4 Monarchs who could only muster a field goal in their 35-3 setback to Marshall last weekend.

Series numbers show Western with the straight up win in each of the past 3 meetings, all 3 wins coming by double-digits, and the Hilltoppers are 2-0-1 against the spread in those 3 victories.

Let's go ahead and lay it with Western Kentucky to keep their roll going.

              2* WESTERN KENTUCKY

My free play is on the Philadephia 76ers over the Boston Celtics, who are still in search of their first victory of the season and obviously struggling without Gordon Hayward.

The Celtics lost Hayward to a gruesome leg injury less than six minutes into the season, during a 102-99 loss in Cleveland. Then they dropped a 108-100 decision at home to Milwaukee.

Meanwhile, the Sixers wil play in their home-opener tonight after a tough 120-115 loss in Washington. It was a game performance, and certainly showed me this team might contend with a young, healthy, talented squad.

With Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz, the top picks in each of the last two drafts, plus Joel Embid, the Sixers will have the home crowd on fire tonight for the home opener.

                Take Philly.

                1* SIXERS

                    New Mexico +7.5

The Lobos look to rebound from an embarrassing loss last time out.
This is the perfect chance to really get the fan base back on their side after a shutout loss to Fresno State.
New Mexico has gone 11-4 SU at home in their last 15 games and overall are 2-1 on the season there, averaging 40.7 points per contest.
They've also rebounded very nicely as of late from a loss. The Lobos are a perfect 4-0 ATS when failing to win in their previous game. This team typically can make solid adjustments during the week after a loss, which really enables them to recover the following week.
Some trends to note. Lobos are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game.Lobos are 5-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
This is a nice bounce back spot for the Lobos.
                    Back New Mexico.
                    Good Luck, Razor Ray.

Scott Rickenbach's CFB Free Pick Friday:

OVER the total in Old Dominion Monarchs vs Western Kentucky Hilltoppers @ 6 ET -

The last 3 meetings between these teams have averaged a total of 95 points per game! The weather will be perfect in Norfolk, VA this evening. A pleasant fall evening with light winds and comfortable temperatures. Western Kentucky's plan last week was to get the ball downfield more and it certainly worked with QB Mike White throwing for 5 touchdowns and 398 passing yards. Overall, the Hilltoppers set a season high with 627 yards of offense. That doesn't bode well for an Old Dominion defense that has allowed 530.5 yards per game in their last two home games. The Monarchs are allowing an average of 46 points per game their last 4 games. The Old Dominion offense has certainly struggled at times this season but they have been much better at home where they're averaging 27.3 points per game. The over is 8-2 when the Monarchs enter a game off of two or more consecutive SU losses. The over is 12-3 when Western Kentucky enters a game off of two or more consecutive SU wins. Free Pick on OVER the total in Old Dominion EARLY Friday evening.

Vancouver vs. Buffalo, 10/20/2017 19:00 EDT

                            Total: -125/+5½ Under

Fp: Canucks have scored 2 or less in 12 straight dating back to last year and the sabers have been no power house this season on the offensive side .. so 6 goals to beat us will be a chore making the under my nhl free pick .

2-0 SWEEP with star rated football picks Thursday, Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach is ready to do it AGAIN Friday! Be sure to check out ALL of his star rated picks in ALL sports for another HUGE Friday to get you locked and loaded for a MASSIVE weekend! Though he lost his NBA Total yesterday he is a PERFECT 2-0 with his premium NBA sides this season. Rickenbach's NBA Free Pick Friday: Philadelphia 76'ers (-) vs Boston Celtics @ 7:05 ET - While it may be tempting to back Boston here since they are 0-2 on the season and the Sixers have averaged just 19 wins per season the last 4 years, the fact is that Philadelphia is in a great spot here. Philly is much improved this season and they are hungry for their home opener and, even in recent bad seasons, they are known for giving huge efforts in their home games. The 76'ers did lose their season opener at Washington but they did hang on for the cover. Now they catch the Celtics playing their 3rd game in 4 nights and still trying to get over the devastation of the Gordon Hayward injury. Boston is on a 12-20 ATS run in divisional games. The Sixers are a surprising 5-1 SU and 4-1-1 ATS the 6 times they have been a favorite the past two seasons. In this case, being a small fave versus the wounded Celtics is absolutely justified. Also, the 76'ers are on a 46-30 ATS run in games against teams with a losing record and a 10-5 ATS run after scoring 115 points or more in their prior game. A lot of young talent on this Sixers team and, as long as they stay healthy, this team is going to make big strides this season. Free Pick on PHILADELPHIA in Friday EARLY evening action.

Bucks are a very talented young team that will look to show the NBA they are for real this season and what better way then beating the Cleveland Cavs who might not be into this game as much as the Bucks are. How much will Lebron play tonight? Bucks beat Boston in Boston and if they can beat the Cavs then they will have sent a clear message to NBA fans that they are for real this season. Giannis has looked even better this season then last season and some think he will contend for the MVP honors look for him to have a huge night tonight as the Bucks easily cover this generous line. Invest 9 units in the Bucks tonight.
