    Preview: 76ers at Pistons

    Gracenote
    Oct 22, 2017

The Philadelphia 76ers came into the 2017-18 campaign with something that has been missing from the team in recent seasons - expectations. The 76ers, who have yet to earn a win, will continue to try to meet their own expectations and those of their fans when they visit the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

Philadelphia made strides last season with Joel Embiid finally making his debut and intended to make more with No. 1 picks Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz joining the lineup this year, but the organization continued to ask for patience after a 128-94 loss at the Toronto Raptors on Saturday. "I think it’s just going back to doing what we’ve talked about," 76ers coach Brett Brown told reporters. "We’re not going to do anything differently in relation to what we value, and to how we practice and how we preach." The Detroit Pistons had their own expectations heading into the season and so far are meeting most of them with wins in two of the first three games. The addition of Avery Bradley in the starting guard spot not only adds a top-level perimeter defender to the mix but also gives the team another outside shooting threat to help open driving lanes for point guard Reggie Jackson.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE 76ERS (0-3): It hasn't ended up putting the team in the win column yet, but Simmons is living up to all the hype. The 6-10 point guard is the first player in franchise history and only the sixth in NBA history to begin his career with three straight double-doubles and flirted with a triple-double by collecting 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists on Saturday. "When you’re coaching and feeling the game, you’re feeling that he has the ability to be incredibly special," Brown told reporters. "You feel immediately, the stuff he does on a floor is very unique - his size, his burst of speed, his ability to get to the rim and take hits. All of those things is wrapped up to me in athleticism."

    ABOUT THE PISTONS (2-1):
Jackson sat out the first 21 games last season while dealing with knee tendinosis and struggled to find his burst when he finally returned. The 27-year-old is back to his old self in 2017-18 and is averaging 16.7 points and 6.7 assists in 28.3 minutes while making all 12 of his free-throw attempts. "He was attacking the basket and then you put the ball in his hands and he makes all seven free throws, finished out the game really, really well," Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy told reporters of Jackson after a 111-107 win at New York on Saturday. "The thing for us is Reggie’s making so much greater effort at the defensive end of the floor. That’s the biggest change."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Pistons SF Tobias Harris is leading the team in scoring with an average of 24.3 points on 55.8 percent shooting.

    2. 76ers PG Jerryd Bayless is 9-of-16 from 3-point range.

    3. Detroit took two of the three meetings last season, including a 136-106 thrashing in Philadelphia on March 4.

    PREDICTION: Pistons 120, 76ers 109

        Preview: Hawks at Heat

        Gracenote
        Oct 22, 2017

The Miami Heat rebounded from a disappointing season opener with a strong performance and look to move over .500 for the first time since early in the 2016-17 campaign when they host the Atlanta Hawks on Monday. The Heat led by as many as 21 points in the second half before withstanding a fourth-quarter comeback attempt and posting a 112-108 victory over Indiana on Saturday as they began a six-game homestand without injured center Hassan Whiteside.

“When we built the lead, our defense was active, our deflections, hands, multiple efforts, that was more in the direction of how we want to get to with our identity,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters after his team shot 51.7 percent. Whiteside (bruised knee) is questionable for the matchup with Hawks, who have dropped two in a row after winning their opener at Dallas on Wednesday. Atlanta may have lost more than a game on Sunday as leading scorer Dennis Schroder (23.3 points) went down with an ankle injury during its 116-104 setback at Brooklyn and will undergo an MRI on Monday. The Hawks, who are opening the season on a five-game road trip while renovations to their arena are completed, have allowed 112 points per contest and also visit Chicago on Thursday.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (1-2): Veteran guard Marco Belinelli played 31 minutes off the bench in the loss at Brooklyn and poured in 19 points, but he is just 6-of-23 over his last two games after scoring 20 points on 50-percent shooting in the opener. Small forward Kent Bazemore recorded season highs in points (16) and minutes (32) on Sunday as Atlanta shot just 34 percent. Rookie John Collins, who has made 52 percent of his shots over the first three games, notched his first career double-double with 14 points and 13 boards at Brooklyn.

ABOUT THE HEAT (1-1): Goran Dragic recovered from a rough shooting performance in the season-opening loss at Orlando with a 9-of-13 performance that produced 23 points against Indiana while Dion Waiters added 19. Jordan Mickey was a surprise starter in place of Whiteside and scored eight points to go along with six rebounds in 14 minutes while fellow center Kelly Olynyk scored 13 off the bench. James Johnson, who is averaging 12.5 points and eight assists over his first two games, was named as a co-captain along with Dragic and veteran forward Udonis Haslem.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. Atlanta F Luke Babbitt will get a chance to play against the team with which he spent last season.

        2. Miami SG Josh Richardson has drained five 3-pointers on 12 attempts over the first two contests.

        3. The Heat have won five of the last seven meetings, including the last two in 2016-17.

        PREDICTION: Heat 110, Hawks 94

            Preview: Hornets at Bucks

            Gracenote
            Oct 22, 2017

The Charlotte Hornets are the next team to try their hand at slowing down Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo when the teams tangle Monday night in Wisconsin. Antetokounmpo scored at least 34 points in each of his first three games and put up a career-high 44 on 17-of-23 shooting in Saturday's 113-110 win over Portland.

"This is just the beginning," the 22-year-old told reporters. "I'm not done yet. We've got 79 more games plus playoffs, hopefully. It's just the beginning." Antetokounmpo was held to 10 points in the last meeting with the Hornets in April but he managed 11 rebounds and 10 assists for one of his three triple-doubles on the season. Charlotte is coming off its first victory of the season, a 109-91 triumph over Atlanta on Friday night. Center Dwight Howard made his home debut for the Hornets a special one with 20 points and 15 rebounds against his former team.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (1-1): Charlotte rallied from 20 points down to top the Hawks, utilizing a 24-0 run in the third quarter to overcome another sloppy effort that featured 15 first-half turnovers. Kemba Walker scored 26 points and had his second straight game with at least 10 made free throws, a notable development after he went all of last season without hitting double digits in that category. The Hornets are hoping that forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist can make his season debut after he was away from the team following the death of his grandmother.

ABOUT THE BUCKS (2-1): Malcolm Brogdon failed to get off a long-range attempt in the win over Portland after making 7-of-16 through his first two games, instead lending support in other ways with six assists and four steals. Fellow guard Tony Snell picked up some of the slack with a 7-for-8 shooting night and forward Mirza Teletovic came off the bench to nail 3-of-4 3-pointers in the win. Milwaukee entered Sunday's action with the early NBA lead in shooting (49.6 percent), although it ranked 29th in shot attempts per game (79.3).

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Hornets C Cody Zeller (knee) missed Friday's win and is day-to-day.

            2. Bucks SF Khris Middleton made 1-of-11 3-point attempts after hitting a career-high 43.3 percent of his long-range tries last season.

            3. Walker needs three 3-pointers to become the second player in franchise history to make 800 in a Charlotte uniform.

            PREDICTION: Bucks 114, Hornets 107

                Preview: Grizzlies at Rockets

                Gracenote
                Oct 22, 2017

The Memphis Grizzlies and the Houston Rockets each already have a win over the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors under their belt and both are undefeated on the young season. Something will have to give on Monday, when the Rockets host the Grizzlies in an early Southwest Division showdown.

Houston is changing things on the fly after losing point guard Chris Paul to a knee bruise in the first game and is going back to what worked last season with James Harden leading the offense. "It doesn't," Harden responded to ESPN.com when asked if it changes his mentality. "Just make plays, score the ball and play the right way." Memphis knocked the Warriors off their game in a 111-101 triumph on Saturday but is not ready to stop pushing forward. "We’ve got to be humble in this win," Grizzlies forward Chandler Parsons told reporters. "We did a lot of good things (Saturday), but we’ve also still got a lot of things that we can clean up and build off this and get better. It’s not going to get easier. We’re going to Houston, and that’s another big test for us; another big team we’ve eventually got to go through in the West."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Memphis), AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (2-0): Memphis is hitting the road for the first time this season and has several new faces but still leans heavily on center Marc Gasol. The All-Star dominated the Warriors with 34 points and 14 rebounds on Saturday and recorded two double-doubles in as many games. "We are really active, I think," Gasol told reporters. "Guys are taking to heart what they’re supposed to do. They’re competing on the ball. Obviously, there’s a lot of mistakes made, but I think our hustle and determination is getting us through them."

                ABOUT THE ROCKETS (3-0):
Houston was just 11-of-47 from 3-point range in the home opener against Dallas on Saturday but managed to pull out a 107-91 win thanks to 29 points and seven assists from Harden. The Rockets, who shot 35.7 percent from 3-point range on an average of 40.3 attempts in 2016-17, are shooting just 28.6 percent from beyond the arc on an average of 44.3 attempts early in 2017-18. “We have so far to go," forward Ryan Anderson told the Houston Chronicle. "We’re still figuring it out. We’re still gelling together. Lot of new guys. We haven’t been playing the way we want to and we’re still winning. It’s great news because it shows where we can go."

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. Rockets SG Eric Gordon is 5-of-25 from 3-point range.

                2. Grizzlies SF James Ennis III is 8-of-8 from the floor.

                3. The teams split four meetings last season, with Houston taking the last two by an average of 19.5 points.

                PREDICTION: Rockets 106, Grizzlies 99

                    Preview: Warriors at Mavericks

                    Gracenote
                    Oct 22, 2017

The Golden State Warriors came into the season with almost unreal expectations and are having some trouble meeting them in the first week of the season. The Warriors will try to keep their cool and even their record when they visit the Dallas Mavericks on Monday.

Golden State stars Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant were both ejected in the final minute of Saturday's 111-101 loss at Memphis after Curry - protesting a no-call on a drive to the basket - tossed his mouthpiece near a referee and Durant came to his defense. "That last play, I thought I got fouled, and my frustration boiled over," Curry told ESPN.com. "I did something stupid. I deserved to get kicked out, and that's what happened. Obviously, I'll learn from it and try not to do it again." The Mavericks are struggling out of the gate as well and are about to face their second straight title contender after falling 107-91 at Houston on Saturday. “I’m not going to make any excuses. It’s a hard schedule for everybody,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle told reporters. "Everybody’s got to play, everybody gets banged up, everybody’s got things that happen, unfortunately, and guys miss games. We’ve just got to keep slugging."

                    TV:
                    8:30 p.m. ET, NBCS-Bay Area (Golden State),

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (1-2): Curry and Durant are both off to strong starts offensively but Golden State is struggling on the defensive end and with turnovers. “I’m not doing a great job of putting together combinations, finding the right ways to get guys going, to get some joy and laughter in here," coach Steve Kerr told reporters. "It’s just one of those rough patches. Hopefully we can climb our way out of it. I’m sure we will." The Warriors led the NBA with a 43.5 defensive field-goal percentage last season but are allowing opponents to go off at 47.1 percent through the first three games of 2017-18.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (0-3): Dallas isn't expected to do much this season but does have some hope for the future in point guard Dennis Smith Jr., who collected 16 points and 10 assists in his NBA debut on Wednesday. Smith, who had left knee surgery in 2015, sat out the last two games with swelling in that knee, but the issue is not believed to be serious and he could return as soon as Monday. Yogi Ferrell started at point guard in the last two games and averaged 16.5 points and four assists.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Mavericks SG Seth Curry (lower leg) has yet to make his season debut and remains day-to-day.

                    2. Durant leads the NBA with 14 blocked shots.

                    3. Golden State took the last six in the series and won the three meetings last season by an average of 18.3 points.

                    PREDICTION: Warriors 123, Mavericks 97

                        Preview: Raptors at Spurs

                        Oct 22, 2017

The San Antonio Spurs played the first two games without former Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard but still had little trouble shutting down their opponents. The Spurs will try to make it three straight strong performances with Leonard sidelined when they host the Toronto Raptors on Monday.

San Antonio is leaning on power forward LaMarcus Aldridge in Leonard's absence, and Aldridge delivered an average of 26.5 points and 10 rebounds in the first two contests while totaling four blocked shots. Aldridge helped hold the Minnesota Timberwolves to 43.5 percent from the floor in a win in the season opener and anchored an even better effort on Saturday, when his team held the Chicago Bulls to 37.8 percent from the field in an 87-77 triumph. The Spurs should have a much tougher time defending the Raptors, who exploded out of the gates with an average of 122.5 points in the first two games, capped by a 128-94 thrashing of the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. "We’ve got to be the best Toronto Raptors team we can be," coach Dwane Casey told reporters. "Offensively, there’s a niche we have to find, keep moving the ball."

                        TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, TSN 2 (Toronto), FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (2-0): Toronto is beginning a six-game road trip at San Antonio and might be doing it without starting center Jonas Valanciunas, who suffered a sprained ankle against the 76ers after going off for 23 points and 15 rebounds in the season opener. Valanciunas is traveling with the team but is not expected to play on Monday. Picking up the offensive slack in Valanciunas' absence was All-Star guard DeMar DeRozan, who recovered from a lackluster season debut (11 points on 2-of-9 shooting) by going for 30 points on 8-of-12 from the floor on Saturday.

ABOUT THE SPURS (2-0): Leonard's potential return is still a question mark, but Aldridge could be getting some help sooner than expected from veteran point guard Tony Parker. Parker, who suffered a torn left quadriceps tendon during the playoffs last spring and underwent surgery, is already running and practicing. "His rehab is going really well," coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. "He's going 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 pretty much full speed. I think he gets to go 5-on-5 in about a week and we'll see how he looks."

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. Veteran F Rudy Gay is averaging 13 points in his first two games with the Spurs.

                        2. Toronto PF Serge Ibaka is 7-of-11 from 3-point range.

                        3. San Antonio took both meetings last season and three straight in the series.

                        PREDICTION: Spurs 108, Raptors 106

                            Oct 22, 2017

The Washington Wizards had a solid start to their season at home and will try to carry over that success when they open a four-game road trip at the Denver Nuggets on Monday. The Wizards averaged 117.5 points in knocking off Philadelphia and Detroit in the nation's capital, although they hope to get more stops on the other end of the floor as the season progresses.

"We showed glimpses of when we were good, but if we don't pick up defensively on the road, we won't win any games," guard John Wall told reporters after Friday's 115-111 win over the Pistons. "We got to figure out a way to get back to playing defense consistently." Wall scored 26 points and Otto Porter Jr. broke out for 28 to go along with nine rebounds and four steals for Washington, which is looking to open 3-0 for the first time since 2005. Standing in the way is a Nuggets team that showcased a strong defensive effort to knock off Sacramento 96-79 on Saturday in its home opener. "Coming off a loss you always want to come out the next game and be aggressive," guard Will Barton told reporters, referencing a loss at Utah to begin the season. "We felt we had some lapses last game on the defensive end. We wanted to get into those guys and make them feel us."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS Washington, Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (2-0): Washington has utilized an aggressive approach that yielded an average 29.5 made free throws, tops in the NBA entering Sunday. Wall led the march to the line with a 9-of-11 showing against the Pistons and fellow guard Bradley Beal has 23 attempts through the first two games. Wall and Beal combined for 53 points as the Wizards picked up a 123-113 win in their last visit to Denver on March 8.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (1-1): Denver bucked some notable trends with its low-scoring win over the Kings by snapping a 23-game losing streak when held under 100 points and surviving an affair in which star forward Nikola Jokic was held scoreless. "You don't have to score to be effective," forward Paul Millsap said of Jokic, who chipped in nine rebounds and seven assists. "There are only a certain amount of guys in this league who can do that and he's one of those guys. He's willing to sacrifice and try to get everybody else involved." Millsap scored 18 points in his home debut with the Nuggets while backup Kenneth Faried matched him in just 23 minutes.

                            1. Jokic, who averaged 17.7 points after the All-Star break last season, has seven points on 3-of-13 shooting through the first two games.

                            2. Wizards C Marcin Gortat is averaging 13.5 rebounds and shooting 61.1 percent.

                            3. The teams alternated season series sweeps over the past five years, with Washington taking both meetings in 2016-17.

                                Preview: Kings at Suns

The Phoenix Suns have had a woeful time trying to stop teams from scoring, a scenario that prompted the firing of head coach Earl Watson on Sunday. The Suns hope to reverse that trend under interim head coach Jay Triano when they host the offensively challenged Sacramento Kings on Monday.

Watson finished with a 33-85 mark at the helm in Phoenix and watched his team allow an average of 128.7 points during its 0-3 start, with reports of his dismissal surfacing the day after a 130-88 setback against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Kings might offer a little relief as they finish up a three-game, four-day road trip that included a 96-79 setback at Denver on Saturday. Zach Randolph was the lone Sacramento starter to score in double figures and he finished with only 11 points as the team's first five combined to shoot 10-for-38 from the floor. The Kings won three of four meetings last season against the Suns, whose lone victory came on Devin Booker's game-winning jumper.

ABOUT THE KINGS (1-2): While the starters struggled mightily at Denver, rookie standout De'Aaron Fox made a splash off the bench with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with five rebounds in a team-high 29 minutes. "The one thing De'Aaron did when he came in was he was aggressive to the rack and we need him to do that," guard Garrett Temple told the media. "But everybody needs to do that, we can't settle for jumpers. If you have an open shot, take it." Forward Skal Labissiere chipped in 13 points but there were very few other contributions for a team that entered Sunday ranked 29th in the league in scoring (90.7) and last in made free throws per game (8.7).

ABOUT THE SUNS (0-3): Phoenix has been outrebounded by an average of 10.6 - the second-largest number in the league - and opponents are shooting an NBA-high 51.5 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from 3-point range. Guard Eric Bledsoe followed up a 28-point performance in a two-point loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday with a four-point, four-turnover effort against the Clippers. Rookie Josh Jackson has at least 11 points in his first three games but has yet to shoot better than 40 percent in a game and has one assist in 84 minutes thus far.

                                1. Kings G Buddy Hield shot 1-of-10 against Denver but had 30 points in a win over Phoenix in April.

                                2. Suns C Tyson Chandler is averaging 11.5 rebounds while making 8-of-11 shots over his last two games.

                                3. Sacramento rookie G Bogdan Bogdanovich (ankle) might make his NBA debut Monday.

                                PREDICTION: Suns 106, Kings 104
