Thursday Night Football betting preview and odds: Dolphins at Ravens

Miami Dolphins at Baltimore Ravens (-3, 37)

Journeyman Matt Moore is fresh off a brilliant comeback performance and now will serve as the starting quarterback when the Miami Dolphins visit the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday. Moore came off the bench after Jay Cutler suffered multiple cracked ribs on Sunday to rally Miami from a 14-point deficit and record a 31-28 victory over the New York Jets.

Moore threw two touchdown passes during a 17-point fourth quarter and brings a more boisterous approach than the introverted Cutler, who could miss multiple contests. "It's an emotional game and I'm an emotional player," Moore told reporters on Tuesday, two days prior to making his 29th career regular-season start. "It's always better when you're having fun. When you're kicking the dirt, that's not the way to do your job. So I try to have a good time." Miami has won three straight games, so it is experiencing better times than the Ravens, who have allowed an average of 27.6 points while losing four of their last five contests. "I wouldn't say it's a must-win," Baltimore safety Eric Weddle told reporters, "but it's definitely a big-time game that we need to try and do everything in our power to win."

            TV:
8:25 p.m. ET, CBS, NFL Network.

            LINE HISTORY:
Despite all the troubles of the Ravens offense, oddsmakers are still giving them the edge at home, setting the line at Baltimore -3. The line has yet to move off the opening number. The total hit the board at a very low 37.5 and has actually moved down further to the current number of 37.

            POWER RANKINGS:[/B] Dolphins (1.5) - Ravens (3.5) + home field (-3) = Ravens -1

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "Its going to be hard for the Dolphins and Ravens to match the excitement of last Thursday's Chiefs-Raiders thriller. That doesn't mean its not going to be an interesting game though. The Dolphins come in as the hotter team but the Ravens may well be the hungrier one. I had projected this line to be exactly where it is, so don't find a whole lot of value with the side. If the line moves off three, I'll be taking a closer look. Getting the Ravens at less than -3 (doubtful) would provide some value, while the Dolphins would start looking more interesting if the line climbed above four." - Ben Burns

            INJURY REPORT:

Dolphins - QB Jay Cutler (Out Thursday, ribs), DT Jordan Phillips (Questionable Thursday, ankle), C Anthony Steen (Questionable Thursday, foot), DE Andre Branch (Questionable Thursday, groin), WR DeVante Parker (Questionable Thursday, ankle), C Mike Pouncey (Probable Thursday, knee), T Ja'Wuan James (Probable Thursday, hand), TE Julius Thomas (Probable Thursday, knee), RB Jay Ajayi (Probable Thursday, knee), T Laremy Tunsil (Probable Thursday, knee).

Ravens - S Eric Weddle (Questionable Thursday, ankle), LB Patrick Onwuasor (Questionable Thursday, knee), S Tony Jefferson (Questionable Thursday, ankle), LB Terrell Suggs (Questionable Thursday, knee), CB Jimmy Smith (Questionable Thursday, achilles), DB Anthony Levine (Questionable Thursday, back), WR Michael Campanaro (Questionable Thursday, shoulder), WR Chris Matthews (Questionable Thursday, thigh), WR Mike Wallace (Questionable Thursday, concussion), WR Breshad Perriman (Questionable Thursday, concussion), TE Maxx Williams (Questionable Thursday, ankle), LB Tim Williams (Questionable Thursday, thigh), WR Jeremy Maclin (Questionable Thursday, shoulder), RB Terrance West (Questionable Thursday, calf), TE Benjamin Watson (Probable Thursday, knee).

            ABOUT THE DOLPHINS (4-2, 3-2-1 ATS, 1-5 O/U):
Running back Jay Ajayi (442 yards) is saddled with a 3.5-yard average that is well below the 4.9 mark of last season's breakthrough campaign, but he will have a shot at posting his third 100-yard performance of the year against a Baltimore squad that ranks last in the NFL in rushing defense (145.3 yards per game). Moore will try to pump life into a sagging offense that ranks 31st in scoring (15.3 points) and dead last in total offense (261.8 yards) as well as try to make a downfield threat out of receiver Jarvis Landry, who is averaging just 8.1 yards on 45 receptions. Defensive end Cameron Wake has recorded six sacks after posting 2.5 against the Jets, but the defense has made only two interceptions.

            ABOUT THE RAVENS (3-4, 3-4 ATS, 4-3 O/U):
Baltimore ranks 23rd in the NFL in scoring offense (18.8 points) and 28th in total offense (277.6 yards) while quarterback Joe Flacco has been an underwhelming performer with five touchdown tosses and eight interceptions. "I have to be more consistent," Flacco told reporters. "That is the name of this game. In order to win the majority of your games, you have to play consistent, and you still probably are going to lose a couple." Outside linebacker Terrell Suggs (team-best 4.5 sacks) is expected to play through a knee injury, while cornerback Brandon Carr has recorded a club-leading three interceptions.

            TRENDS:

            * Dolphins are 0-7 ATS in their last seven meetings.
            * Ravens are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
            * Under is 8-0-1 in Dolphins last nine Thursday games.
            * Over is 4-1 in Ravens last five games overall.

            CONSENSUS:
Bettors are fairly split on this matchup, with 53 percent of bettors giving the Ravens a slight edge. The total is even closer with 51 percent of wagers on the Under.

The Eagles of Eastern Michigan tote their 2-5 mark into Huskie Stadium here on Thursday as they face 5-2 Northern Illinois.

Based on the fact none of Eastern's last 12 losses have come by more than 7 points means they should once again be right there against a Northern team that has beaten them straight up in 15 of the last 16 series meetings, including wins in each of the last 9 (7-2 against the spread).

The Eagles have gone 5-2 against the spread this season, and they are 15-4 now against the spread in their last 19 lined games. They have also covered 9 of their last 10 games as the road dog, largely because their defense has been able to limit the opposition to just 20-points per game.

Last year's meeting in Ypsilanti saw NIU squeak by in overtime, 31-24, which tells me that Eastern Michigan knows full well they can compete with this Huskies team once again this season on the road.

Mid-week MAC games usually result in some wild action, and tonight I think the wise move is taking the points with this "live" dog.

Eastern Michigan takes it down to the wire.

This game has defensive struggle written all over it.

The Ravens simply play good defense at home, and that is why Baltimore is 11-5 Under their last 16 home games.

Miami, not a huge scoring threat themselves, especially in week 8 performances, they are currently 14-3 Under last 17 in Week 8 games.

The Dolphins are also, 5-1 Under so far this season.

                Under is the play.

                3* MIAMI-BALTIMORE UNDER

My free pick is for tonight is on the Milwaukee Bucks over the Boston Celtics.

The Milwaukee Bucks have traveled to Boston, and hosted Cleveland, Portland and Charlotte. The Bucks are 3-1 after beating the Celtics, Blazers and Hornets. And they're still enjoying the friendly confines of home.

Tonight is a celebration of the franchise's 50th anniversary celebration and will feature throwback jerseys.

Milwaukee will play its fourth straight home game, while the Celtics are playing just their third road game of the season, after a blowout win of the New York Knicks on Tuesday.

And I got news for you, if the Celtics couldn't stop Giannis Antetokounmpo in Boston, you can't expect them to in Milwaukee. After just a couple of weeks, he looks more like an MVP-candidate than Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, Kevin Durant or Steph Curry. Yeah, I said it.

Antetokounmpo is averaging a league-best 36.5 points through four games and in addition to setting a new career high with 44-spot against the Blazers in Saturday's 113-111 victory, he surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record for points through four games by scoring 147

The Bucks will also get a boost from the return of point guard Malcolm Brogdon, who returned to practice Wednesday without limitations, after dealing with an ankle injury.

While I know the Celtics have won 4 of the last 6 meetings, the lost the first meeting in Boston, 108-100 on Oct. 18. Plus, the Bucks have covered nine of their last 13 against teams from the Atlantic Division.

                  Lay the home chalk tonight.

                  4* BUCKS

This game features the 2-5 Eastern Michigan at the 5-2 Northern Illinois Huskies. Both these teams have gone under a ton this season. E.Michigan has gone under in 6 of 7 games and N.Illinois has gone under in 5 of 7 games so this line is really padded I believe as the public pounds the under. Take the Over here for a 15* winner.

Since 2010, the Kings have visited Montreal five times. All five of those games had O/U lines of five. This evening, while we do have to lay a little extra juice for the privilege, we're able to get an O/U line of 5.5. In what should be a relatively low-scoring affair, I feel that extra half goal is offering us some value.

Last year's game here had a final score of 4-1, landing right on the number. The year before? A 3-0 win for the Kings.

This marks the Kings' fourth straight game away from LA. Their last two games have produced exactly five combined goals, each staying below the total. Note that the "under" is 19-6-6 the past 31 times that they played their previous three or more games on the road. Those stats should have a great shot at improving tonight. Take a look at the Under 5.5 goals.

                        Preview: Stanford at Oregon State

                        Gracenote
                        Oct 24, 2017

Following a much-needed week off, No. 20 Stanford aims for its fifth straight victory Thursday in Corvallis against a re-energized Oregon State team under interim coach Cory Hall. The Beavers have dropped five in a row and will be hard-pressed to slow down Heisman Trophy hopeful Bryce Love, who leads the nation in rushing at 198.1 yards per game and has 18 carries of 30 yards or more.

Love has a remarkable 1,387 rushing yards through seven games despite carrying only once in the second half of Stanford’s 49-7 rout of Oregon on Oct. 14. Stanford’s offensive line has gone four straight games without allowing a sack while creating opportunities for quarterback Keller Chryst, who turned in one of his best games of the season against Oregon, throwing for 181 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. The Cardinal are tied for first in the Pac-12 North but need to avoid a letdown against Oregon State, which headed into its off week after playing one of its most competitive games of the season in a 36-33 loss to Colorado. “I felt that they fought hard, I felt that they showed a different side of Beaver football than I’ve seen since I’ve been here, and I couldn’t be happier for them,” Hall told reporters. “Times are changing.”

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Stanford -23

ABOUT STANFORD (5-2, 4-1 Pac-12): Love ranks second nationally with 200.9 all-purpose yards per game to lead the Cardinal, who have averaged 295 rushing yards with 12 touchdowns during their four-game winning streak. Linebacker Curtis Robinson had a team-high seven tackles against Oregon but the Cardinal run defense struggled again as the Ducks rushed for 276 yards. The Cardinal have been stronger in the secondary where safety Justin Reid (five) and cornerback Quenton Meeks (two) have combined for seven interceptions.

ABOUT OREGON STATE (1-6, 0-4): Hall took over for Gary Andersen on Oct. 8 and immediately placed a greater emphasis on the run game as Ryan Nall finished with 172 yards rushing and three touchdowns against Colorado. Junior wide receiver Seth Collins, who leads the team with 43.3 receiving yards per game, missed the contest because of an unspecified illness and could be out for the rest of the season. Senior linebacker Manase Hungalu has been a bright spot on defense with 59 total tackles, five for loss, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and three quarterback hurries.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. The Cardinal have won seven straight matchups against Oregon State and eight of the past nine.

                        2. Oregon State’s last Thursday night victory came against No. 1 USC on Sept. 25, 2008.

                        3. Stanford has won 16 of its past 17 games when scoring first.

PREDICTION: Stanford 31, Oregon State 17
