The Chicago Bulls and the Atlanta Hawks are both going through a bit of a rebuilding phase after saying goodbye to stars over the summer, and both are dealing with some growing pains. The Bulls will try to record their first victory of the 2017-18 campaign when they host the Hawks on Thursday.

Both clubs enter Thursday's showdown riding a three-game slide after Atlanta, which has the misfortune of beginning the season with five straight games on the road, followed up a win in the season opener at Dallas with three straight setbacks. “It’s going to be a tough year," Hawks swingman Kent Bazemore told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "But if we can continue to plug away and keep the effort consistent and once the offense starts rolling around where we start making shots and start getting better shots through our offense, things will start to look up." The Bulls came out strong against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday and scored 68 points in the first half to take a lead into the break before being held to 44 points in the second half and suffering a 119-112 loss. Chicago is moving forward with a young team and is getting impressive results from rookie forward Lauri Markkanen, who is averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (1-3): Atlanta point guard Dennis Schroder missed Monday's 104-93 loss at Miami with an ankle injury and is not expected to return until the home opener on Friday, leaving the team without its most explosive scoring option at Chicago. The Hawks were led by Bazemore (20 points) and Taurean Prince (20) in a loss to the Miami Heat but battled to the end and was quick to point out that the team would be bringing that energy every night. "That is one thing you are not going to have to worry about with the Atlanta Hawks, is not bringing it every game," Prince told reporters. "The competitiveness, the heart, that will be there every game."

ABOUT THE BULLS (0-3): Markkanen scored a season-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting in the loss at Cleveland and knocked down 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. The 7-0 forward is 10-of-22 from beyond the arc on the season and scored in double figures in each of his first three games. "I thought our guys did an excellent job of finding him," Chicago coach Fred Hoiberg told reporters after Tuesday's game. "We got him in transition several times out of our flow offense. ... He's going to be a heck of a player, man."

The Dallas Mavericks no longer are a winless basketball team and they look to complete a sweep of the home-and-home series when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday. Rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. fueled a 103-94 home win over the Grizzlies on Wednesday, helping Dallas end its season-opening four-game skid.

The Mavericks played their best game of the young season and were aided by Memphis, which played its worst. The Milwaukee Bucks announced their intention to contend in the Eastern Conference this season by opening the campaign with a win at the Boston Celtics in their season opener. The Bucks will try to cement their status as one of the top teams in the league by doing it again when the Celtics visit Milwaukee on Thursday.

The Bucks happen to have one of the most exciting young players in the league on their roster in small forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who at 22 years old is becoming a legitimate MVP contender and started off the season averaging 36.8 points on 65.9 percent shooting in the first four games. Antetokounmpo had little trouble carving up Boston in the season opener, collecting 37 points on 13-of-22 shooting, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 108-100 win. The Celtics were one night removed from the shock of losing Gordon Hayward to a season-ending ankle injury while playing Milwaukee and have since turned the page with back-to-back wins. Boston breezed to a 110-89 victory over the New York Knicks on Tuesday while getting strong performances from a pair of promising young players.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (2-2): Fellow No. 3 overall picks Jaylen Brown (2016) and Jayson Tatum (2017) are being leaned on heavily in the wake of Hayward's injury and both are responding. The two combined for 45 points on 18-of-31 shooting on Tuesday and rank second (Brown 18.8) and third (Tatum, 14.8) on the team in scoring behind Kyrie Irving (20). "We’re in a situation right now where we’re going to expect a lot out of those guys and we need them to be great, we need them to be able to respond to adversity, and we need to be able to respond to pats on the back just the same," Boston coach Brad Stevens told reporters of Brown and Tatum. "We have high expectations for them; they should have high expectations for themselves, and they’re getting a great opportunity.”

ABOUT THE BUCKS (3-1): Milwaukee is searching for some help for Antetokounmpo and is hoping a late 3-pointer from Khris Middleton in Monday's 103-94 win over the Charlotte Hornets is what the veteran needed to break out of a shooting slump. Middleton was just 1-of-15 from beyond the arc on the season before knocking down that shot and is averaging 15.3 points on 39 percent shooting. Power forward Mirza Teletovic is helping to open up space on the inside for Antetokounmpo as well by knocking down 8-of-13 from 3-point range over the last two games.

The Clippers, who traded away franchise cornerstone Chris Paul over the summer, are dominating at the defensive end and entered play Wednesday leading the NBA in scoring defense at an average of 88 points.

Los Angeles easily breezed past a pair of high lottery teams - the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns - in its first two games but had little trouble knocking off a playoff contender in its first chance on Tuesday, pulling out a 102-84 win over a Utah Jazz squad that knocked it out of the postseason last spring. “I think it was important for us, after two games that weren’t really close down the stretch, to be tested a little bit,” Clippers forward Blake Griffin told reporters. “I thought we did a good job of maintaining our composure and getting stops when we needed them." The Trail Blazers are a tough team to stop and are averaging 112.8 points while shooting 44 percent from 3-point range. Portland wasn't at its best on offense against New Orleans on Tuesday but showed off its skill at the other end by holding the Pelicans to 39.5 percent shooting in a 103-93 win.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (3-0): Keying Los Angeles' defensive effort is center DeAndre Jordan, who enters play on Wednesday leading the NBA in rebounds (18.3) and came out on top in a battle with one of the game's best defensive centers in Utah's Rudy Gobert on Tuesday. Griffin is also taking on a bigger role with Paul gone and led the team in scoring in each of the first three games. The 28-year-old power forward handed out a season-high six assists on Tuesday and is 8-of-18 from 3-point range while averaging 26.7 points and 9.7 rebounds.
