    Preview: Flyers at Senators

    Gracenote
    Oct 26, 2017

The Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers have cooled considerably following hot starts to the season, with the former failing to hold a late lead in the third period en route to a third loss in four contests. The Senators look to regain their edge on Thursday as they conclude a five-game homestand against the Flyers.

Goaltender Mike Condon misplayed the puck behind his own net, leading to a late goal and eventual 3-2 shootout setback against Los Angeles on Tuesday. Ottawa has been no stranger to working past regulation this season, and all three games versus Philadelphia in 2016-17 ventured past 60 minutes as well. Flyers forward Sean Couturier was held in check against the Senators last campaign but pushed his point total to six (five goals, one assist) in the last five contests with two goals in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to Anaheim. Philadelphia has mustered just three tallies in its last three games (1-2-0) after erupting for 18 in its previous three.

    TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN Philadelphia, TSN5, RDS2 (Ottawa)

ABOUT THE FLYERS (5-4-0): Second overall pick Nolan Patrick was no worse for wear on Wednesday, one day removed from exiting the loss to the Ducks after being hit head-first into the boards by Anaheim's Chris Wagner. "I don't know if it's scary. It's part of the game. It happens fast, and I'm fine," the 19-year-old Patrick told Philly.com after Wednesday's practice. In addition to Patrick returning to the ice, Philadelphia also will feature a new-look top defensive unit with Ivan Provorov being paired with the puck-moving Shayne Gostisbehere in the absence of Andrew MacDonald (leg).

ABOUT THE SENATORS (4-1-4): Craig Anderson will look to continue his run of good fortune versus Philadelphia, against which he owns a 10-5-3 career record and .923 save percentage. Derick Brassard, who leads the team in goals (six) and points (10), was kept off the scoresheet in all three meetings with the Flyers last season. Fellow forward Mark Stone scored and set up a goal versus Philadelphia last campaign and has netted four of his five tallies this season at home.

    OVERTIME

    1. Ottawa C Kyle Turris sat out Wednesday's morning skate due to the flu and has been ruled out versus Philadelphia, coach Guy Boucher told reporters.

    2. Flyers G Michal Neuvirth, who leads the league with a 1.36 goals-against average and .957 save percentage, will draw his fourth start of the season on Thursday.

    3. Philadelphia RW Wayne Simmonds' availability versus Ottawa is in question as he reportedly is battling foot, groin and mouth injuries.

    PREDICTION: Senators 4, Flyers 2

        Preview: Red Wings at Lightning

        Gracenote
        Oct 25, 2017

The Tampa Bay Lightning hope to continue dominating the series and extend their overall point streak to nine games when they host the struggling Detroit Red Wings for an Atlantic Division battle Thursday. The Lightning are 7-0-1 in their last eight games after a 5-1 victory at Carolina on Tuesday and have won the last eight contests against Detroit, starting with two in the 2015-16 playoffs and the latest a 3-2 decision Oct. 16.

Captain Steven Stamkos, who leads the league with 20 points, and linemate Nikita Kucherov (NHL-most 11 goals) have hit the scoresheet in every game for Tampa Bay while goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy (99 career games) has been outstanding with an NHL-best eight wins. The Lightning are second in the league at 4.10 goals per game and the Red Wings are in the bottom third (2.6) after dropping a 1-0 decision at Buffalo on Tuesday for their fifth consecutive setback (0-4-1). Detroit could get speedy forward Andreas Athanasiou back in the lineup after a contract dispute to give the offense a boost, and defenseman Danny DeKeyser is close to returning after missing the last seven games with an ankle injury. “We’ve been playing better than getting only one point out of 10, but you can’t fall back to that either and stay somewhat happy about that,” Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg told the Detroit Free Press. “The only thing we can do is stick together here. … We know it is going to be a challenge for us in Tampa.”

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (4-5-1): The 23-year-old Athanasiou broke out last season with 18 goals and 29 points in 64 games before holding out and signing a one-year, $1.378 million contract last week. “We all know what type of player AA is,” Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard, who is expected to start Thursday, told the Free Press. “He uses his speed, he’s got a great skill set and he will help this lineup a lot.” Defenseman Mike Green leads the team with 11 points while Zetterberg and Dylan Larkin have nine, but the Red Wings need more from Gustav Nyquist (two goals, four points) and Darren Helm (one, three).

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (8-1-1): Rookie defenseman Mikhail Sergachev will be around the entire season after playing his 10th game Tuesday, activating the first of his three-year entry level contract. The 19-year-old Russian, acquired in a big trade with Montreal for Jonathan Drouin, leads all rookie blueliners with four goals and has nine points overall with a plus-4 rating - averaging 12:46 of ice time. Brayden Point and Vladislav Namestnikov are also off to strong starts offensively with four goals and seven assists apiece while Anton Stralman has four points and leads the league with a plus-11.

        OVERTIME

        1. Detroit Fs Tomas Tatar and Justin Abdelkader are each one point away from 200 in their careers.

        2. Stamkos and Kucherov can each match the franchise record point streak of 11 to start a single season, set by Martin St. Louis (2009-10).

        3. The Red Wings are 3-for-30 on the power play over the last nine games after scoring twice with the man advantage in the season opener.

PREDICTION: Lightning 5, Red Wings 2

            Preview: Ducks at Panthers

            Gracenote
            Oct 25, 2017

The Anaheim Ducks have won back-to-back contests for the first time this season and are slowly getting a little healthier as they continue a four-game road trip against the struggling Florida Panthers on Thursday night. Captain Ryan Getzlaf (two points) and top-pair defenseman Hampus Lindholm (one assist) returned from injuries to contribute on the scoresheet as the Ducks knocked off Philadelphia 6-2 on Tuesday.

“We’ve been banged down and beaten up here pretty good with injuries,” Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle told reporters. “Anytime you can welcome veterans back and they come in, it does energize your group and it gives your group more confidence.” The Ducks have been without center Ryan Kesler (hip, out until at least December) and defenseman Sami Vatanen (shoulder, close to a return) all season, and recently lost blueliner Cam Fowler (knee, indefinite), but have fought their way over .500 and face a Florida team that has dropped four of five. The Panthers are near the bottom of the league in goals against per game (3.75) and were pounded 5-1 at Montreal on Tuesday after earning an inspiring victory at Washington in the previous contest. The biggest problem for Florida has been the penalty kill, which sits last in the league at 69.7 percent after allowing its ninth and 10 power-play goals of the season against the Canadiens.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, KCOP-13 (Anaheim), FSN Florida

ABOUT THE DUCKS (4-3-1): Getzlaf had a goal and an assist in his return while playing with Rickard Rakell (goal Tuesday) and Corey Perry (three assists, last two games) on the top line. “(Rakell is) a heck of a hockey player and the three of us worked well together in the past,” Getzlaf told reporters. “It’s a comfort level definitely when you get back out there and know where each other is going to be. Those guys do a good job of finding open spots for me.” Forward Ondrej Kase has two goals and an assist in the last two games after missing three with a head injury.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (3-5-0): Coach Bob Boughner blamed penalty trouble for turning the Montreal game around and Florida has allowed four power-play opportunities in each of the last four contests. Defenseman Keith Yandle scored his first goal of the campaign in Montreal and left wing Jonathan Huberdeau added an assist to take over the team lead with eight points. Antti Niemi was claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh to back up James Reimer (2-3-0, .903 save percentage) with Roberto Luongo (hand) placed on injured reserve.

            OVERTIME

            1. Florida F Colton Sceviour (upper-body) missed the Montreal game and is questionable for Thursday.

            2. Anaheim G John Gibson has allowed two or fewer goals in his last six games after permitting seven combined in the first two this season.

            3. The Panthers won both matchups last season, allowing the Ducks one goal in each encounter.

            PREDICTION: Ducks 5, Panthers 3

Tavares hit the scoresheet in only one of New York's first seven games but recorded four goals and three assists in his last two contests, including a hat trick in Tuesday's 5-3 victory over Arizona.

"I know how it gets when he bursts out and then he takes a team on his shoulders for a while," Islanders coach Doug Weight told reporters. Tavares' scoring spree vaulted him into the team lead in goals with six - one ahead of Anders Lee and Brock Nelson, with the latter scoring Tuesday. New York and Minnesota split two meetings last season as Tavares recorded two goals and a pair of assists, giving him six of each in 11 games versus the Wild. Minnesota began a season-high six-game homestand with a 1-0 loss to Vancouver, leaving it 0-1-1 at Xcel Energy Center this season and prompting defenseman Jared Spurgeon to tell reporters: "I thought we had spurts of good hockey, but you have to play 60 minutes."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New York), FSN North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (5-3-1): Jordan Eberle, who played his first seven seasons in Edmonton, hasn't scored in his first nine games with New York but recorded his first multi-point contest Tuesday by assisting on Tavares' first two goals. Eberle and Tavares are joined on a line by Lee, who recorded an assist Tuesday and has five points (three goals) in his last three games. Josh Bailey extended his point streak to four games (two goals, three assists) with an assist versus Arizona while Nelson's goals have come in the last six contests.

ABOUT THE WILD (2-3-2): Power forward Chris Stewart is off to a fast start with six goals on 14 shots, including one tally in each of the two games prior to Tuesday, after recording 13 in 79 games last season. Captain Mikko Koivu, who along with Eric Staal has three goals this season, had a five-game point streak (three goals, two assists) snapped Tuesday. Forward Justin Kloos, who was named Mr. Hockey in Minnesota as a high school senior in 2012, made his NHL debut Tuesday and took a penalty in 8:39 of ice time.

                OVERTIME

                1. The Islanders are 2-for-28 with the man advantage this season while allowing a power-play goal in four of their last five games.

                2. LW Tyler Ennis, who has two goals in his first seven games with the Wild, needs one to reach 100 for his career.

                3. Minnesota LW Zach Parise, who hasn't played this season, underwent back surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss 8-to-10 weeks. Parise hasn't played a full season since the 48-game 2012-13 lockout-abbreviated campaign - his first with the Wild, missing 48 contests over the next four years.

                PREDICTION: Islanders 3, Wild 2

                    Preview: Stars at Oilers

                    Oct 25, 2017

The Edmonton Oilers, off to a surprisingly slow 2-5-1 start, begin a five-game homestand when they host the Dallas Stars on Thursday. Edmonton completed a 1-1-1 road trip with a 2-1 overtime loss at two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh on Tuesday as the Oilers continue to struggle offensively by scoring an NHL-worst 1.88 goals per game.

"We just have to relax. Just calm down," Oilers captain Connor McDavid, who leads the team with four goals and nine points, told reporters. "I mean, we're getting these chances in front of the net that should be automatic and we're not scoring them. Myself included. So we have to get better in that area. ..." Dallas is coming off a 5-3 loss at Colorado on Tuesday in which coach Ken Hitchcock pulled No. 1 goaltender Ben Bishop in favor of backup Kari Lehtonen after he allowed three goals on 14 shots. "It has nothing to do with Ben Bishop. It has to do with wake up, let's get playing, which is exactly what we did," Hitchcock told reporters. "... I'll do the same with any other goaltender. If I think it's going to help the team to change their mindset, I've got to do whatever it takes. So that's what I did." Edmonton won the final two meetings last season by a combined 12-3 with defenseman Oscar Klefbom scoring in each game and McDavid recording four goals in the pair of contests including a hat trick, bringing his career totals versus the Stars to five goals and an assist in four games.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest Plus (Dallas), Sportsnet West (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE STARS (5-4-0): Jamie Benn (team-high 11 points) recorded a goal and two assists Tuesday, giving him three goals and four assists in the last three contests. Tyler Seguin (club-most six goals, 10 points) registered a pair of assists versus Colorado and has four goals and four assists during a five-game point streak. Defenseman Stephen Johns (goal, three points, plus-2 this season) left Tuesday's contest after the first period with a concussion and will likely miss Thursday's game.

ABOUT THE OILERS (2-5-1): Edmonton on Tuesday welcomed the return of Leon Draisaitl (goal, three points in four games), who missed the previous four games with a concussion. Patrick Maroon, second on the club with six points, joins Ryan-Nugent Hopkins and Mark Letestu as the only Oilers other than McDavid with more than one goal (two apiece). Cam Talbot (2-4-1, 2.79 goals-against average, .915 save percentage), who stopped 42 shots Tuesday, is expected to make his fourth straight start in goal.

                    OVERTIME

                    1. Dallas is 2-for-14 on the power play in its last five games after going 4-for-12 in its first four contests and is 30-for-33 on the penalty kill this season.

                    2. Edmonton D Eric Gryba and RW Zack Kassian, who lead the club in penalty minutes with 16 and 15, respectively, are the only Oilers with a plus rating at plus-1.

                    3. Bishop is 5-1-0 with a 2.38 GAA and .920 SP while Lehtonen is 0-3-0, 4.00, .851.

                    PREDICTION: Oilers 3, Stars 2

10* FREE NBA PICK (Grizzlies -8)
This is your classic home-and-home situation where I think the team that lost the first meeting is going to head home and lay it on the opposition. Memphis didn't show up for last night's game in Dallas with the energy you need to win on the road in the NBA and it was understandable coming off back-to-back wins over the Warriors and Rockets. The Mavericks on the other hand were 100% locked in at home trying to avoid starting the season 0-5. Dallas ended up winning by 9-points, but that could have went either way down the stretch. I look for a much different Memphis team to take the floor at home, especially on the defensive side of the ball. That should be more than enough to win here by double-digits against the rebuilding Mavs. Give me the Grizzlies -8!

Play on: Toledo -25 -110 at BMaker

With Toledo on the rise at 6-1 and Ball State fading into the sunset without their regular starting quarterback and at 2-5, the Rockets have soared from -23 to -25. This is a large number to back on Toledo as a road team, nevertheless, the Cardinals have 15 total points in past three games. Given where the teams are, its either Toledo or Pass.
