        Preview: Warriors at Spurs

        Gracenote
        Nov 1, 2017

The Golden State Warriors took a little while at the start of the season but finally found their championship form in a dominating win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. The San Antonio Spurs, who were swept in the Western Conference finals by the Warriors last spring and host the first rematch on Thursday, are not exactly at their best after dropping the last three games.

The Spurs won their first four games behind power forward LaMarcus Aldridge but the absence of Kawhi Leonard (quad) and Tony Parker (quad) was apparent as the team averaged 91.7 points in three losses. Leonard, who was knocked out of the Western Conference finals in Game 1 when he sprained an ankle after landing on the foot of Golden State center Zaza Pachulia, has yet to play this season and coach Gregg Popovich told reporters, "I don't even ask. Seriously. When (the medical staff tells) me he's ready then I'll know he's ready." The Warriors had yet to find their highest gear while dropping three of their first seven games but finally put it all together in a 141-113 trouncing at the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. "We always have confidence going into every game that we'll play our best," Golden State star Stephen Curry told reporters after the win. "Obviously, so far this season, it hasn't happened until tonight."

        TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (5-3): Golden State looked to be turning things around by following losses in two of the first three games with a three-game winning streak, but a 26-turnover performance at home in a loss to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday brought them back down to earth. The Warriors, who committed at least 16 turnovers in each of their first seven games, cut that number down to 12 against the Clippers. "It's kind of crazy to think about how we've played the first eight games," Curry told reporters. "We have the highest-rated offensive efficiency, but our defense and our turnovers have been our Achilles' heel thus far."

        ABOUT THE SPURS (4-3):
San Antonio is searching for scorers to take some of the pressure off Aldridge and may have found one in rookie shooting guard Brandon Paul, who came off the bench on Monday and delivered a season-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting in 30 minutes. Paul, 26, did not get off the bench in the first two games and totaled 18 points in the next four before getting an extended run against the Celtics. Kyle Anderson is starting in Leonard's spot at small forward and is averaging 7.9 points on 42.3 percent shooting after going 2-of-8 from the floor against Boston.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. Curry is 8-of-11 from the free-throw line in the last two games after hitting all 50 of his attempts in the first six contests.

        2. San Antonio SF Rudy Gay is averaging 8.7 points on 9-of-26 shooting over the last three games.

        3. The Spurs took two of the three regular-season meetings in 2016-17, but Golden State earned a 110-98 win in its final trip to San Antonio on March 29.

        PREDICTION: Warriors 112, Spurs 103

            Preview: Lakers at Trail Blazers

            Gracenote
            Nov 2, 2017

The Portland Trail Blazers will try to maintain their recent mastery of the Los Angeles Lakers in the opener of their six-game homestand on Thursday. The Trail Blazers have won 12 straight meetings between the rivals since the Lakers' last triumph in March 2014, including four last season by an average of 13.3 points.

Los Angeles enters this one on a good note after routing Detroit - which had just knocked off Golden State and the Los Angeles Clippers - by 20 points on Tuesday. Rookie Lonzo Ball was one of seven Lakers to score in double figures and chipped in six rebounds, three assists and two blocks without a turnover in a stat line that did not show his true value. "Take away the Phoenix game, this is the best game he's played, I thought," Los Angeles coach Luke Walton told reporters of Ball, who scored 29 points against the Suns earlier in the season. "The way that his pace was, the way he pushed the ball all the time. He was in the other team's paint. He just set the tone, and I thought the whole team fed off the way he was playing." Portland will have to muster up some energy after it dropped a 112-103 overtime decision at Utah on Wednesday.

            TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE LAKERS (3-4): Julius Randle led the way against the Pistons with 17 points in just 17 minutes off the bench while fellow reserve Kyle Kuzma nailed all four of his 3-point attempts en route to 16 points in 20 minutes. Both rank in the top five in scoring on a team that has eight players averaging between 10.4-14.7 points. "This is the way we want to play," forward Brandon Ingram told reporters after scoring 13 points as part of Tuesday's balanced attack. "This is kind of the identity we want to bring every single game."

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (4-4): Damian Lillard has had limited support during Portland's two-game skid, scoring 69 of the team's 186 points - or more than 37 percent of its outcome. Only one other player reached double figures in Monday's 99-85 loss to Toronto and two - Jusuf Nurkic (19 points) and C.J. McCollum (16) - got to that point in Wednesday's defeat. The Blazers have scored a total of 25 points in the second quarter during their two-game slump.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Lillard has scored at least 20 points in eight straight games against the Lakers.

            2. Lakers C Brook Lopez, who has shot over 49 percent in eight of his nine seasons, is at 38.2 percent after a 3-for-9 effort against Detroit.

            3. McCollum went 2-for-8 from 3-point range at Utah after going 16-for-28 over his first six games this season.

PREDICTION: Lakers 108, Trail Blazers 105

Warriors at Spurs 11/2/17 - NBA Picks & Predictions

              by Eddie

              Latest Odds : GS -6.5 Total 218.5

In the first game of a Thursday night NBA doubleheader on TNT, the Golden State Warriors will invade the AT&T Center to battle the San Antonio Spurs. The Warriors have won five of their eight games, but rank a very disappointing 26th in defensive efficiency. On Monday night, Golden State did not need to play much defense during a 141-113 road triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers. The Warriors connected on 14-for-29 from long range and shot a blistering 58 percent overall.

Steph Curry nailed 7-for-11 from the three-point line and finished with a game high 31 points. NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant contributed 19 points and seven rebounds on the night.

The San Antonio Spurs are returning home after a four-game road trip that saw them lose the final three games. The Spurs are a game above ..500 overall and trail Memphis by one full game for the Southwest Division lead. On Monday, San Antonio was outrebounded by 12 during a 108-94 loss at Boston. The Spurs were 12-for26 from the three-point line, but shot just 41 percent overall.

Brandon Paul led five San Antonio players in double figures with 18 points on 6-for-8 from the field. Pau Gasol added 11 points and eight rebounds in a losing effort for the Spurs.

              Recent Betting Trends:
Warriors are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 road games.
Spurs are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Over is 12-2 in Warriors last 14 road games.
Over is 7-1 in Spurs last 8 home games.
Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
              Free Betting Pick: OVER 218.5
San Antonio F Kawhi Leonard (quad) has yet to suit up this season and is unlikely to give it a go in this matchup. These two squads ranked first and second in defensive efficiency a season ago, but have struggled so far. Take the over on Thursday night. Final Score Prediction, Golden State Warriors win and cover ATS 121-112.

                            Preview: Golden Knights at Bruins

                            Nov 1, 2017

The expansion Vegas Golden Knights have faced a bit of turbulence given the constant uneven turns of their goaltender carousel while the Boston Bruins have their own health issues of late. Both teams look to snap modest two-game losing skids on Thursday when they play the finale of their two-game season series at TD Garden in Boston.

Maxime Lagace became the fourth goaltender to start for the Golden Knights this season after turning aside 32 shots in a 6-4 setback at the New York Rangers on Tuesday. "I'm taking the experience in and I'm having fun with all of that. I wish we won (Tuesday) but it's going to be refocus for next game," said the 24-year-old Lagace, who made his second appearance and first NHL start after Marc-Andre Fleury (concussion), Malcolm Subban (lower body) and Oscar Dansk (lower body) were placed on injured reserve. While Vegas let a third-period lead slip away, Boston saw Tyler Toffoli score as time expired in a 2-1 overtime setback to Los Angeles on Saturday before rallying from a three-goal deficit two nights later only to drop a 4-3 shootout decision at Columbus. Brad Marchand, who had an assist in the Bruins' 3-1 loss to Vegas on Oct. 15, has scored in back-to-back contests and recorded a point in all but two games this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, Sportsnet 360, TVA, AT&T Sportsnet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas), NESN (Boston)

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (8-3-0): Reilly Smith snapped a three-game point drought by scoring twice against New York to double his season goal total. The 26-year-old Toronto native has recorded seven points (four goals, three assists) in his last six games, but was held off the scoresheet in his previous encounter versus his former team. Fellow forward Jonathan Marchessault set up a pair of tallies against the Rangers to push his point total to six (three goals, three assists) in a five-game stretch, although he did not play in the first meeting with Boston due to a lower-body injury.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (4-3-3): Forward David Backes will undergo surgery on his colon on Thursday and is expected to be sidelined two months, the team announced Wednesday. "The decision to have surgery was made in consultation with team physicians as well as outside specialists in the management of diverticulitis," team internist Dr. David Finn said in a statement. "David's episode of diverticulitis at the beginning of the season was his second episode in two months and was complicated with an abscess (collection of infection adjacent to the colon) that required drainage. Repeated episodes, like what David experienced, have a very high likelihood of recurrence in the near term, which is why he was advised to have surgery to remove the area of colon causing the problem." Backes, 33, has posted one assist in five games this season.

                            OVERTIME

                                Preview: Islanders at Capitals

The New York Islanders hope to continue their offensive surge when they visit the Metropolitan Division-rival Washington Capitals on Thursday. New York has scored six goals in each of its last two games - both victories - and netted at least four per contest while going 4-1-0 over its last six.

Captain John Tavares has been a major contributor, collecting nine goals and three assists while registering a pair of hat tricks and four multi-point performances over his last five games. Washington returns home after a 1-2-0 Western Canada trip that concluded Sunday with a 2-1 loss at Calgary. Jakub Vrana scored the lone goal in the setback for the Capitals, who have dropped three straight at home and seven of 10 overall (3-6-1) since opening the season with back-to-back triumphs. Captain Alex Ovechkin leads Washington with 10 tallies but has scored just once in his last seven games after netting nine goals over his first five contests.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New York), NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (7-4-1): Tavares is not the only member of the team wielding a hot stick, as two others carry impressive point streaks into Thursday's contest. Josh Bailey notched three assists in Monday's 6-3 victory over Vegas, giving him two goals and 10 assists during his seven-game run, while Anders Lee extended his streak to six contests (four goals, six assists) by setting up a pair of tallies. Bailey has recorded an assist in six straight games, which is three shy of matching the franchise record.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (5-6-1): While Ovechkin continues to struggle, it appears Evgeny Kuznetsov finally has rediscovered his scoring touch. The 25-year-old Russian, who fell one tally shy of his second straight 20-goal campaign in 2016-17, has netted three in as many games following a season-opening nine-game drought. Washington's losing record in October ended its streak of 24 consecutive months in which it finished .500 or better.

                                OVERTIME

                                1. The Islanders posted their highest total of wins in October since registering nine in 2001.

                                2. Washington G Philipp Grubauer has played nearly 214 consecutive minutes since last owning a lead in his season debut on Oct. 9 versus Tampa Bay.

                                3. New York has recorded five of its seven power-play goals on the season in its last two games but has allowed a whopping six short-handed tallies over its first 12 contests.

                                PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Islanders 2
