        Preview: Devils at Oilers

        Gracenote
        Nov 3, 2017

Friday's matchup pitting the New Jersey Devils against the host Edmonton Oilers features one team off to its franchise-best record after 11 games versus another that resides second to last in its respective conference. The surprising tales of the upstart Devils and leaking Oilers will be on display when the clubs meet at Rogers Place.

Cory Schneider turned aside all 37 shots he faced in Wednesday's 2-0 victory versus his former team of Vancouver to improve New Jersey's unblemished road record to 5-0-0, marking the second time in franchise history that it has won its first five games away from the Garden State. The 31-year-old has won four straight starts overall and owns a stellar 7-3-2 career mark versus Edmonton with two shutouts and a rail-thin 1.72 goals-against average in 14 career appearances. While the Devils have been ascending in the Eastern Conference standings, the Oilers - a trendy Stanley Cup pick by several publications - have dropped two in a row on their five-game homestand and eight of 10 overall. "Honest to God, I have nothing left to say. We just have to find ways to win hockey games right now," Patrick Maroon told reporters following Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NHL Network, MSG-Plus (New Jersey), Sportsnet, TVA (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (9-2-0): Brian Boyle did not dent the scoresheet in his season debut, but the very fact that he was on the ice after being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia speaks volumes. "The guys in here, the last six weeks, whether they know it or not ... it's just been a tremendous boost of energy for me. I can't thank them enough," said the 32-year-old Boyle, who logged 15:19 of ice time in his first game since April 23. Former Oiler Taylor Hall had a pair of assists versus Vancouver to give him 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in the past six games.

ABOUT THE OILERS (3-7-1): Reigning Hart Trophy recipient Connor McDavid extended his point streak to four games (two goals, three assists) by setting up a pair of tallies on Wednesday and has four assists in three career encounters with New Jersey. While McDavid has been an offensive force, the rest of his team would have trouble making that same claim as it is averaging an NHL-worst 2.2 goals per contest this season and has two tallies or fewer in eight of 11 contests this season. A porous penalty kill isn't helping matters as Edmonton yielded two power-play goals to the Penguins to drop its season percentage to an NHL second-worst 68.3 percent heading into Thursday's action.

        OVERTIME

        1. Edmonton C Leon Draisaitl scored on Wednesday to extend his point streak to three games (one goal, four assists).

        2. Devils F Jimmy Hayes recorded his second goal and third point in three games on Wednesday, but has been held off the scoresheet in each of his last five encounters with the Oilers.

        3. Edmonton G Cam Talbot has dropped his last two starts in his bid for his 100th career win.

        PREDICTION: Oilers 3, Devils 2

            Preview: Predators at Ducks

            Gracenote
            Nov 3, 2017

The Nashville Predators have been hitting quite a few sour notes away from Music City this season, but they sure struck the right chord against the Anaheim Ducks in last season's Western Conference final. The Predators aim to prevent their sixth loss in eight road contests on Friday when they visit the Anaheim Ducks in a rematch of last season's Western Conference final.

Although Nashville skated past Anaheim in six games to its first Stanley Cup appearance several months ago, it fell for the fourth time in five outings on Wednesday after dropping the opener of a four-game trek with a 4-1 setback in San Jose. "We continue to shoot ourselves in the foot with the penalties," said coach Peter Laviolette, who saw his team permit eight power-play opportunities to the Sharks and at least four to the opposition in all but one game this season. Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle lamented his team's performance with the man advantage as its 31st-ranked power play failed to pay dividends for the third time in four games during Wednesday's 3-1 setback to Toronto. "Our power play's got to deliver more," Carlyle told the Orange County Register. "We need more offense from our power play. When you got four opportunities, you've got to come home with something."
TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN Tennessee (Nashville), Prime Ticket (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (5-5-2): Filip Forsberg, who leads the team in goals (eight) and points (13) this season, shredded the Ducks with five tallies and two assists as Nashville won the Western Conference final last spring. The 23-year-old Swede resides one goal shy of 100 for his career for the Predators, who have mustered just nine tallies during their last five games. Pekka Rinne had been stellar in his previous six outings with just seven goals allowed on 191 shots before surrendering all four tallies versus San Jose.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (6-5-1): Ondrej Kase scored for the second straight outing, albeit with a fortunate carom off Maple Leafs defenseman Andreas Borgman during the first period. Rickard Rakell was denied his team-leading sixth goal when he hit the crossbar on Wednesday, but the 24-year-old Swede will look to regain his scoring touch versus the Predators - against whom he recorded a point in three of four games in last season's Western Conference final. Corey Perry has been limited to just one point - an assist - in his last four outings overall, but he scored twice in last spring's playoff series versus Nashville.

            OVERTIME

            1. Anaheim G John Gibson has dropped four of seven decisions at home (3-3-1) despite posting a .927 save percentage.

            2. Nashville C Ryan Johansen is in the midst of his second three-game point drought over his last eight contests.

            3. Ducks LW Jakob Silfverberg scored twice in three regular-season meetings last season with the Predators and two more times in the playoff series.

            PREDICTION: Ducks 3, Predators 2

                        Preview: Bucks at Pistons

                        Gracenote
                        Nov 2, 2017

The Detroit Pistons were on the verge of sweeping a three-game west coast swing before suffering a letdown in the finale, but a five-game homestand should get them back on track. The Pistons will open that stretch on Friday by hosting the Central Division-rival Milwaukee Bucks, who are losers of three of their last four games.

Detroit knocked off the Los Angeles Clippers to begin the trip and fought for a 115-107 win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors the next night, only to fall to the Lakers 113-93. “We didn’t have the energy to run cuts. We had a lot of guys stopping the ball, dribbling the ball, pounding the ball. And we did not make plays,” Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy told reporters. “We can go right down the list. Anything you bring up. We didn’t defend. We didn’t get back defensively. We didn’t protect the basket. We didn’t close on shooters. We didn’t handle the ball well. We didn’t move the ball. I mean, whatever you want to bring up." The Bucks struggled to get back on defense as well in a 126-121 loss at Charlotte on Wednesday after suffering through a 110-91 loss to Oklahoma City at home the night before. "If you score over 120 points you can say it (the offense) did great, so I guess it did great," Milwaukee coach Jason Kidd told reporters. "But our defense was horrible. It’s not just one side of the ball, we’ve got to play both."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE BUCKS (4-4): Milwaukee star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered through his worst game of the young season on Wednesday, scoring a season-low 14 points and shooting a season-worst 5-of-16 from the floor. "I just missed shots, I think that was what happened tonight," Antetokounmpo told reporters after the game. "I don't see any defense that affects me. I can shoot over guys easily but there were no legs tonight. It was back-to-back games and I just missed shots, that’s it." Antetokounmpo missed both of his 3-point attempts on Wednesday but the rest of the team knocked down 19-of-34 from beyond the arc to keep the Bucks in the game.

                        ABOUT THE PISTONS (5-3):
Detroit intends to return to the playoffs and do some damage this spring, and the first west coast trip taught the team some lessons. "What we can take away is definitely a learning experience,” small forward Tobias Harris told reporters. "Two games that we really dictated how we were going to play and one game where we let the other team dictate how they wanted to play. It’s something we have to be able to understand and to be a really good and successful team we have to be the team that’s dominant from the start and dictating the pace of the game and the intensity of the game." Harris, who leads the Pistons in scoring (20.5 points), is averaging 24 points at home and 18.4 on the road in the early going.

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. Pistons C Andre Drummond recorded a double-double in five of the last six games.

                        2. Bucks SG Khris Middleton scored 43 points on 15-of-28 shooting Wednesday after slumping to nine points on 3-of-14 the previous night.

                        3. Milwaukee took the final three of the four meetings last season, including a 119-94 win at Detroit on Dec. 28.

                        PREDICTION: Bucks 113, Pistons 111

                            Preview: Bulls at Magic

                            Gracenote
                            Nov 2, 2017

Aaron Gordon raised his level of play right along with the red-hot Orlando Magic and the former fourth-overall pick looks to continue his resurgence when the struggling Chicago Bulls pay a visit on Friday night. Gordon, who scored a career-high 12.7 points per game last season, is averaging 20.7 early on in 2017-18 and drained a decisive 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining in Wednesday’s 101-99 victory at Memphis.

“There’s more to come,” Gordon, who is shooting 60.9 percent from the field over the last five games, told the Orlando Sentinel. “Obviously, I’m happy but I’m not satisfied. I’m definitely at peace with where my shot is now, but there’s just more to come.” Orlando rebounded from a loss at Charlotte in the opener of its latest road trip by knocking off New Orleans and Memphis on the way to winning six of eight to start the season, following a disappointing 29-53 campaign in 2016-17. The Bulls are in rebuilding mode and their record shows it with one victory in the first six games and 100 or fewer points scored in five of the contests. Rookie Lauri Markkanen, the seventh pick in last June’s draft, has been impressive so far and delivered a season-best 25 points in Chicago’s 97-91 loss at Miami on Wednesday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FS Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE BULLS (1-5): Markkanen, a 7-0 power forward, is averaging 17.2 points to go along with 9.3 rebounds after draining 9-of-18 from the field against Heat and made 17-of-43 from 3-point range in his first six NBA contests. Guard Kris Dunn, one of the key players acquired in the Jimmy Butler deal, posted 19 total points on 9-of-24 shooting with 11 rebounds and eight assists in his first two games with Chicago after missing four with a finger injury. Center Robin Lopez poured in a season-high 22 points against Miami after managing just 10 in the 101-69 setback against Oklahoma City last Saturday.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (6-2): Gordon has given Orlando another strong offensive option, but guard Evan Fournier led the way in the first eight games while scoring at least 20 in seven of them and averaging 22 with 24 made 3-pointers. Fournier is shooting 55.8 percent from behind the arc and Gordon 57.7 to lead the Magic, who top the league in 3-point shooting percentage at 42.2 after draining 13-of-29 on Wednesday. Elfrid Payton (hamstring) is questionable and fellow point guard D.J. Augustin (hamstring) is not expected to play Friday, which should give more playing time to guard Shelvin Mack (5.6 points, 4.6 assists).

                            BUZZER BEATERS

                            1. Orlando C Nikola Vucevic, who is shooting 55.5 percent from the field, hopes to rebound from a season-low seven points against Memphis.

                                Preview: Pacers at 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers are cruising right along behind the dynamic duo of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, but one of their many former top picks isn't having quite as much fun of late. The 76ers will likely leave center Jahlil Okafor on the bench again when they go for a fourth straight win while hosting the Indiana Pacers on Friday.

Philadelphia did not pick up the fourth-year contract option on Okafor, who was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 draft but played in only one of the team's first eight games this season while sitting behind Embiid on the depth chart. The 76ers are reportedly working to trade the disgruntled center after declining to enter into contract buyout discussions. The Indiana Pacers have their own talented young center in Myles Turner who has only played in one game this season due to a concussion suffered in the opener, leaving the door open for Domantas Sabonis to make his mark in the starting lineup. The second-year center, who came over in the deal that sent Paul George to Oklahoma City, is averaging 13.1 points and 11.1 rebounds and recorded a double-double in each of the last three games - all wins.

ABOUT THE PACERS (5-3): Indiana began its three-game winning streak by beating the San Antonio Spurs and made another early statement on Wednesday by rolling to a 124-107 win at Cleveland. "Our guys executed offensively," Pacers head coach Nate McMillan told reporters. "We moved the ball and got it to the open man. We played the game the right way. We talk about that all the time, you play the game the right way and normally good things happen." Indiana shot 54.4 percent from the field and 16-of-26 from 3-point range against the Cavaliers and enters play Thursday fourth in the NBA in team field-goal percentage at .483.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (4-4): The big difference so far this season is the emergence of rookie point guard Ben Simmons, who is averaging 18.5 points on 53 percent shooting, 9.6 rebounds and 7.9 assists. "I’m finding where I can score, where I can be effective," Simmons told reporters. "I’m still learning that part of the game It’s coming to me a lot more." Simmons nearly pulled off his second triple-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists in 34 minutes on Wednesday to lead Philadelphia to its first home win, 119-109 over Atlanta.

                                BUZZER BEATERS

                                1. Pacers PG Darren Collison scored 25 points on 9-of-10 shooting on Wednesday after totaling 11 points on 4-of-14 in the previous two contests.

                                2. Philadelphia PF Richaun Holmes (wrist) could make his season debut on Friday.

                                3. Indiana took three of the four meetings last season and eight of the last nine in the series.
