The Florida State Seminoles entered the year with five consecutive seasons of 10 wins or more that included the 2013 national title. After getting drubbed by lowly Boston College on Friday night the Noles are now in danger of their first losing season since 1976. The Eagles whipped the Noles 35-3, handing coach Jimbo Fisher's squad its third loss in four games. Syracuse enjoyed a bye week and after beating Clemson earlier this season is ripe to knock off another ACC heavyweight.

The Orange scores 29.8 points per game and allows 24.6 ppg to rank in the middle-of-the-pack nationally on each side. Eric Dungey is the Cuse catalyst at QB. He's completed 60 percent for 2,217 yards with 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. He's also rushed for more than 400 yards and eight TDs, but he's been sacked a whopping 23 times in eight games. Steve Ishmael is the top receiver, with 66 catches for 843 yards and four scores.


It's difficult to imagine how FSU, with all those blue-chip recruits and strong tradition, could devolve from contending for titles to trying to avoid the conference basement. The Noles offense is putrid, putting up 17.3 points per game (124th in nation) and looking listless in every area. The passing offense is ranked 86th (200 yards per game) and the rushing offense is 97th (134.7 ypg). James Blackman has 1,149 yards passing, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. Cam Akers has 493 yards rushing but the Noles have only three TDs on the ground.

UMass is one of five independents at the FBS level of college football and the Minutemen are not an easy opponent, upsetting Appalachian State 30-27 in double overtime last week for their second consecutive victory over a perennial Sun Belt power. Mississippi State's only losses this season came against top-15 opponents and they were impressive for the third week in a row, handling Texas A&M 35-16 in a game that probably signaled the end for Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin.

Andrew Ford has completed 64 percent for 1,990 yards with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions but his back must be sore as he's been sacked an incredible 30 times. Marquis Young has 116 carries for 590 yards and seven TDs for the Minutemen while surehanded tight end Adam Breneman has caught 47 passes for 605 yards and three TDs for a UMass offense that scores 29.9 points per game. UMass allows 30.5 ppg.


Like Dak Prescott before him, Nick Fitzgerald is the ideal dual threat quarterback to lead coach Dan Mullen's offense at Mississippi State. Fitzgerald leads the Bulldogs in passing - 1,320 yards, 13 touchdowns - and rushing - 666 yards, 10 touchdowns - this season and keeping him under control is the top priority for every opponent. The Bulldogs manage 33.9 points per game (34th) and the defense in Starkville never rests, stuffing opponents on the ground and in the air, allowing 17.4 points per game (12th in the nation). A New Year's Day bowl is within reach for State.

The Pac-12 South Division title hangs in the balance as the streaking Arizona Wildcats head to Los Angeles with a hot quarterback and a conference championship in sight. The Arizona offense amassed at least 45 points for the fourth consecutive week - all victories - clobbering No. 15 Washington State 58-37 late Saturday night. USC bounced back from a bad effort against Notre Dame to whip Arizona State 48-17 and improve to 5-1 in conference, a half-game ahead of Arizona.

Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate rushed for 840 yards in October. That's more than any player has accumulated in a month in 10 years. He scampered for 158 yards and passed for 275 more in the rout over Washington State. He has more than 1,700 yards total offense and 14 TDs on the season, pacing an attack that's piling up 45 points per game (third in nation). Tony Ellison has 22 receptions for 295 yards and a pair of scores. The Arizona defense is adequate, allowing 30.3 ppg (88th).


The Trojans' offense is no slouch, either, scoring 33.7 points per game behind a top-25 passing attack engineered by future NFL first-round pick Sam Darnold. All he's done is throw for 2,558 yards with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Deontay Burnett has caught 61 passes for 788 yards and eight TDs while Ronald Jones II is a force on the ground - racking up 888 yards and 10 touchdowns so far. The Trojans allow 25.8 points per game but will have their hands full with Tate and Arizona.

The ACC's Coastal Division title is on the line in South Florida this weekend as two teams that might be the conference's best hook up in what should be a tight game controlled by two dominant defensive units. Virginia Tech sloshed its way to a 24-3 win on a sloppy field in Blacksburg, dominating the Blue Devils in every aspect of the game. Miami struggled through the first half in Chapel Hill, built a lead and held on for a unconvincing 24-19 win over North Carolina to remain unbeaten.

Virginia Tech is pulverizing opponents with one of the best defenses in the land, allowing 11.5 points per game (2nd). The Hurricanes allow 18.7 points per game - 20th in the nation.
