        Preview: Lakers at Wizards

        Gracenote
        Nov 9, 2017

The Washington Wizards were one of six teams in the NBA to win at least 30 games at home last season, but the tables have turned early in 2017-18. The Wizards will attempt to snap a three-game slide at Capital One Arena - and exact a measure of revenge for an earlier road loss - when they host the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.

Washington has allowed an average of 121.7 points in the three straight home losses and let lowly Dallas snap a six-game skid with its 113-99 victory in the nation's capital on Tuesday. "We are not a team that can just outscore anybody," Wizards point guard John Wall told reporters. "You have to be able to guard in this league, and we have not done that." They did to a reasonable degree in a visit to Los Angeles last month but fell apart offensively down the stretch in regulation and lost to the Lakers 102-99 in overtime. Los Angeles has a quick turnaround for this one after dropping a 107-96 decision in Boston on Thursday to open a four-game road trip.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles), NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE LAKERS (5-6): Thursday's loss was the third in a row on the road for Los Angeles, but the squad can be encouraged by rallying from an early 21-point deficit to get within two midway through the third quarter. Brandon Ingram scored 18 points and shot at least 50 percent for the fifth time in his last six contests, while Jordan Clarkson matched him in 27 minutes off the bench. The Lakers made 5-of-24 3-pointers to drop their NBA-worst percentage from beyond the arc to 30.4.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (5-5): Wall recorded 23 points and 14 assists while fellow guard Bradley Beal also scored 23 in Tuesday's loss, but only one other player - Otto Porter Jr. (13) - reached double figures as Washington was held under 100 points for the first time since its loss to the Lakers. The squad received a late boost from little-used center Jason Smith, who had not seen any action in the previous two games but sparked a short-lived comeback against the Mavericks with an active 10-minute burst. "He gave us great energy, that's one thing he will do," coach Scott Brooks told reporters Wednesday of Smith, who registered one basket, two rebounds and two blocked shots. "It's just, my job is to find minutes for him. I've struggled with that. He hasn't shot the ball from (3-point range) like he will eventually. … But I got to figure out how to get him some minutes."

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. Beal scored a game-high 28 points in the previous meeting.

        2. Los Angeles rookie PG Lonzo Ball is averaging six points while shooting 10-for-45 over a four-game span, although he has recorded 26 assists and just five turnovers in that stretch.

        3. The Lakers are looking to sweep the season series for the first time since 2010-11.

        PREDICTION: Wizards 109, Lakers 101

            Preview: Pelicans at Raptors

            Gracenote
            Nov 8, 2017

The dynamic duo of Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins is proving to be too big a handful for most opponents. Davis and Cousins will try to lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a fourth straight win when they visit the Toronto Raptors on Thursday.

Davis and Cousins combined for 69 points and 27 rebounds in a 117-112 win at the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday and drove the Pelicans within one win of sweeping a four-game road trip. "We're not a team that quits," Cousins told reporters after New Orleans overcame a 14-point halftime deficit at Indiana. "And I love this about this team, no matter how much adversity hits, we keep fighting. I think that will take us a long way." The Raptors have a pair of All-Stars in the backcourt but are struggling with consistency on both ends while trying to open up the offense. Toronto knocked off the lowly Chicago Bulls 119-114 at home on Tuesday but squandered a 20-point halftime lead and allowed them to shoot 50 percent from the floor

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS New Orleans, Sportsnet ONE (Toronto)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (6-5): New Orleans has a chance to outrebound every team it faces thanks to the presence of Cousins (13.6 rebounds) and Davis (12.8), and both came up with key boards down the stretch on Tuesday. "That's exactly what they were -- hustle plays," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters. "The last one (Cousins' tip-in basket) that went in was big, because it makes it a two-possession game and changes everything." Cousins is averaging 25.7 points and 15.3 rebounds on the road trip while Davis is putting up 31.3 points and 14.3 boards in the three games.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (6-4): Toronto is allowing opponents to shoot 45.9 percent from the floor on the season -- 20th in the NBA heading into play on Wednesday -- after ranking sixth in the league in defensive field-goal percentage last season (44.9). "Little things (like) weak-side help," Raptors coach Dwane Casey told reporters while assessing the defensive issues after Tuesday's game. "They scored, what, 16 points in the first six minutes of the (third) quarter? That's totally unacceptable defensively. We get so caught up in what we're doing offensively we forget about what we're doing at the other end." DeMar DeRozan bailed out the defense with 24 points in the win and is averaging 29 over the last three contests.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Pelicans PG Jrue Holiday is 0-of-16 from 3-point range in the last five games.

            2. Raptors C Jonas Valanciunas recorded his first double-double since the season opener with 21 points and 10 rebounds on Tuesday.

            3. Toronto swept the two-game season series in each of the last two campaigns.

            PREDICTION: Raptors 109, Pelicans 105

                Preview: Cavaliers at Rockets

                Gracenote
                Nov 8, 2017

Dwyane Wade's criticism of the Cleveland Cavaliers' starting five was answered in a big way on Tuesday, at least offensively. Lebron James and his fellow Cavaliers starters will try to keep up their high level of production when they visit James Harden and the Houston Rockets on Thursday.

Wade called out the starters after the four non-James members of the five combined for 25 points on 9-of-29 shooting in a 117-115 loss to the lowly Atlanta Hawks on Sunday, and it seemed to light a fire under the team ahead of Tuesday's clash with the Milwaukee Bucks. "In my experience, what I've learned is you're going to go through different things throughout the year," Wade told reporters after the 124-119 win over Milwaukee. "This is the first one. The first 10 or 11 games we went through something. ... But now we move on from this phase, hopefully, and we move into another one. Then we will have another something and we will have to figure out as a team how to get over that. But at the end of the day, we're all getting over it together." The starters and the bench will have to score to keep pace with the Rockets, who are hitting their stride with wins in three straight. Houston scored a season high in a 137-110 win over the Utah Jazz on Sunday as Harden did his best James impression with 56 points and 13 assists.

                TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (5-6): The biggest jump among the starters from Sunday to Tuesday came from power forward Kevin Love, who exploded for a season-high 32 points and 16 rebounds after managing four points and four boards against the Hawks before leaving the loss with an illness. The former All-Star attacked the basket on Tuesday and went 14-of-16 from the free-throw line and 9-of-14 from the floor without attempting a 3-pointer. J.R. Smith took a step forward as well and scored 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting after totaling 15 points on 5-of-15 over the previous three contests.

                ABOUT THE ROCKETS (8-3):
Harden went 19-of-25 from the floor and 7-of-8 from 3-point range en route to his career-high 56 points against the Jazz. "I was just shooting it, I don't know," Harden told reporters. "I don't really pay too much attention to it. I just try to take good shots and pretty much make the right decision. Obviously, I'm going to make mistakes, but as long as I have that mindset, I'll be good." Harden is getting plenty of support from shooting guard Eric Gordon, who is averaging 23.1 points on the season and knocked down 6-of-11 from 3-point range on Sunday.

                1. James will pass Michael Jordan (1,072) on the career list for games played on Thursday.

                2. Rockets PG Chris Paul (knee) has not played since opening night but is "rounding second and pretty close to third" in his recovery, according to coach Mike D'Antoni.

                3. The home team took each of the two meetings last season.

                PREDICTION: Rockets 133, Cavaliers 129

                    Preview: 76ers at Kings

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 8, 2017

The Philadelphia 76ers didn't need star center Joel Embiid to run their winning streak to five games on Tuesday, but they won't be sad to see him return to the lineup. Embiid is expected to get the start when the 76ers continue their five-game road trip by visiting the Sacramento Kings on Thursday.

Embiid was the most high-profile rookie on the Philadelphia roster last season but he wasn't the only talented first-year player, and Dario Saric picked up the slack for his fellow NBA sophomore by pouring in a season-high 25 points in Tuesday's 104-97 win at Utah. "I felt this can be my night," Saric told reporters. "You need to stay focused all game, try to keep my mind with what coach (Brett Brown) says, stick with the plays, stick with my game, too. How to score in my role." The Kings have a roster packed with young players as well but leaned on a veteran to snap a seven-game slide on Tuesday. Power forward Zach Randolph, 36, scored all 18 of his points in the second half as Sacramento earned a 94-86 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the opener of a brief two-game homestand.

                    TV:
10 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia-plus, NBCS California (Sacramento)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (6-4): Philadelphia is trying to grow and improve with each game, and staring down a five-game road trip is just the next step for the young roster. With Embiid (load management) sitting out, Saric jumped into the starting lineup and rookie Ben Simmons once again filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks to mark his third straight game with at least a double-double and the second consecutive game in which he collected multiple blocks and multiple steals. "It shows a lot about our team, that we pushed, how we fought through it, and there were guys who stepped up," Simmons told reporters. "...We just want to win."

                    ABOUT THE KINGS (2-8):
Tuesday's win over the Thunder marked Sacramento's best defensive effort of the season, holding the Thunder to 33.7 percent from the floor, but also included another strong offensive effort from shooting guard Buddy Hield. The second-year pro is thriving in three games since moving to a reserve role, averaging 17 points on 19-of-31 shooting after managing 10.3 points on 35.4 percent shooting as a starter last month. Hield is joined on the second unit by rookie guard De'Aaron Fox, who is averaging 12.4 points and 5.3 assists while working behind veteran starter George Hill.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. 76ers SF Robert Covington is 14-of-25 from 3-point range over the last three games.

                    2. Randolph is averaging 16.3 points on 54.7 percent shooting in the last four contests.

                    3. The teams split the two-game series in each of the last four seasons.

                    PREDICTION: 76ers 106, Kings 98

                        Preview: Thunder at Nuggets

                        Gracenote
                        Nov 8, 2017

The Oklahoma City Thunder insist they are just going through some growing pains as their superstars and supporting staff learn to play alongside each other, but the losses are starting to get ugly. The Thunder will try to avoid a fourth straight setback and bounce back from a loss to the lowly Sacramento Kings when they wrap up a three-game road trip by visiting the Denver Nuggets on Thursday.

Oklahoma City dropped a 94-86 decision to the Kings while shooting 33.7 percent from the floor as stars Carmelo Anthony, Paul George and Russell Westbrook combined to go 15-of-54 from the field. "We have a whole year to figure it out," George told reporters. "We can't really rush into this. It's something that step-by-step, day-by-day, at this point game-by-game we have to slowly get on the same page. It sucks to drop games like this. We look back down the road in March and April, we'll be pretty sick about it, but this isn't when we want to play our best basketball." The Nuggets are starting to come together and won five of their last seven games. Star center Nikola Jokic broke out for a career-high 41 points in a 112-104 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday after managing just eight points in a loss to the Golden State Warriors on Saturday.

                        TV:
                        10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE THUNDER (4-6): Westbrook won the MVP award last season after averaging a triple-double and is putting the weight on himself to get Oklahoma City's stars on the same page. "We will be better because I will be better," Westbrook told reporters after the loss in Sacramento. "I'm not worried. I love nights like this. It does nothing but bring you closer as a unit and as brothers. I'm encouraged by the group of guys we have in that room." Westbrook is averaging 20.1 points, a league-best 10.9 assists and 9.3 rebounds but is also averaging a league-high 5.2 turnovers after giving it away seven times in Tuesday's setback.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (6-5): Jokic, who went 16-of-25 from the floor on Tuesday, is averaging 17.9 points on 53.5 percent shooting, 11.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists. "The guy can do it all," Denver coach Michael Malone told reporters. "It was one of those nights for him, We needed it. ... He is ultra-skilled. Obviously, the way he's been shooting the ball from 3-point range this year has been magnificent. I'm going to stop saying he's a (heck) of a young player. I don't care how old he is. Nikola Jokic is one of the best players in the NBA." The 22-year-old Jokic averaged 19.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists in three games against Oklahoma City last season.

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. Nuggets G Jamal Murray scored in single digits in each of the last three games after scoring at least 20 points in each of the previous three.

                        2. Thunder G Raymond Felton went scoreless in 14 minutes on Tuesday after scoring a season-high 15 points on Sunday at Portland.

                        3. Denver snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series with a win at Oklahoma City in the regular-season finale last April.
