Arizona State needs to win one of its two remaining games to become bowl eligible. The first – and clearly best – shot for the Sun Devils will be Saturday afternoon when they visit 1-9 Oregon State.


Last Saturday night in Los Angeles, Arizona State fell short in a 44-37 shootout versus UCLA to fall to .500 and now needs to beat either the Beavers or rival Arizona (7-3) the following Saturday to become postseason eligible for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. A win also would at least clinch a .500 regular-season record for the seventh time in the last eight years for the Sun Devils – a stretch that would be the program’s longest since an eight-in-nine-year run from 1985-93. Oregon State, meanwhile, wrapped up its fourth straight losing season more than a month ago and now is trying to avoid a second winless Pac-12 campaign in the last three years. Saturday’s game will mark the home finale/Senior Day for the Beavers, who close out the season Nov. 25 with their annual Civil War tussle with Oregon in Eugene.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (5-5, 4-3 Pac-12): The Sun Devils had won three of four entering the UCLA game but fell short against the Bruins despite racking up advantages in total (584-573) and rushing yards (294-192). Running back Demario Richard and quarterback Manny Wilkins have combined for 936 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns over the last two games, and as a team Arizona State has accounted for a whopping 41 percent (675) of its 1,646 season rushing yards in the last two contests. Junior linebacker Christian Sam has a conference-most 104 total tackles to lead a defense which ranks in the Pac-12’s bottom third in scoring (32.1 points allowed per game) and total defense (455.0 yards).

ABOUT OREGON STATE (1-9, 0-7): Last week against host Arizona, the Beavers became the latest defense to be gashed on the ground by quarterback/darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate Khalil Tate and the Wildcats, who rushed for a for a school single-game-record 534 yards in a 49-28 win. Down 28-0 at halftime, Oregon State at least showed some second-half fight under interim coach Cory Hall as Darell Garretson tossed four TD passes in the final 30 minutes and running back Ryan Nall totaled 135 yards from scrimmage. On the other side of the ball, linebacker Manase Hungalu trails only Sam in the conference with 8.7 tackles per outing and is one of the few bright spots for a unit which is surrendering the most points (40.7) and second-most yards (464.7) in the Pac-12.


EXTRA POINTS

Iowa looks to bounce back from a humbling defeat when it hosts Purdue on Saturday in a Big Ten clash. The Hawkeyes were held to 66 total yards as they suffered a 38-14 setback to fourth-ranked Wisconsin after racking up 55 points in the upset win over No. 8 Ohio State the previous week, and they hope to get their offense back on track by toppling the Boilermakers for the fifth straight time.

"We took a step backwards and part of that was us and part of that was the competition," Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz admitted to reporters. "We played good competition the week before too but we just didn't have it on Saturday." Purdue must win its final two games to become bowl eligible after dropping a 23-13 decision to Northwestern. The Boilermakers have lost four of their last five games, including three straight on the road, after a promising 3-2 start and hope to turn their fortunes around by knocking off the Hawkeyes for the first time since a 27-24 victory on Nov. 10, 2012. "Everybody has a dream of playing at the highest level but you've got to give your best performance every time you step on the field," Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm told reporters. "I think it's important that our guys against a very good football team come ready to play."

ABOUT PURDUE (4-6, 2-5 Big Ten): Sophomore quarterback Elijah Sindelar set new career highs in completions, attempts and passing yards as he finished 37-of-60 for 376 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to Northwestern. Jared Sparks had an afternoon to remember as he caught a personal-best 11 passes for 130 yards while Anthony Mahoungou and Jarrett Burgess each had a touchdown reception against the Wildcats. Linebacker T.J. McCollum led the way with 10 tackles, including 1 1/2 for loss, and a sack after missing the previous four games with an ankle injury.

ABOUT IOWA (6-4, 3-4 Big Ten): Nate Stanley was limited to 41 yards on 8-of-24 passing against Wisconsin after throwing five touchdown passes in the win over Ohio State on Nov. 4. Defensive back Josh Jackson was named the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week after taking back two interceptions for touchdowns to go along with three tackles and a forced fumble in the loss to the Badgers. Safety Amani Hooker - who has registered 44 tackles ad two interceptions, including a pick six - is likely to miss his second consecutive game with a bruised knee.

Although there is still a scenario that can get eighth-ranked Ohio State into the College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes must first take care of their own business that starts with a home Big Ten battle against improving Illinois on Saturday afternoon. Ohio State, which is ninth in the CFP rankings, sandwiched big wins over Penn State and Michigan State with a damaging loss to Iowa and now must win out while hoping for help.

“Especially when you guys talk to the players,” Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer told reporters at his weekly press conference, “there will be zero conversation about what happened before and what’s going to happen in the future. Zero.” Ohio State’s quarterback J.T. Barrett, who boasts 99 career touchdown passes, will play his final home game after the senior’s Heisman Trophy hopes were dashed by six interceptions in the last two contests. Sophomore quarterback Jeff George Jr. is coming off one of his best games with 261 yards and a pair of touchdown passes versus Indiana. Freshman wideout Ricky Smalling (28 catches, 488 yards) and freshman tight end Louis Dorsey (18, 332) have stepped up after injuries gave them the spotlight.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (8-2, 6-1): Barrett has still had an outstanding senior season with 2,557 yards passing - moving within 62 of 9,000 in his career - and 30 touchdown passes along with seven scores on the ground. Freshman J.K. Dobbins has led the ground attack with 1,038 yards and five touchdowns while sophomore Mike Weber (437, seven) was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after gaining 162 on nine carries in the 48-3 win over Michigan State. The Buckeyes boast three players with 400 yards receiving, 10 with at least 100 and 11 with a TD reception.

There are plenty of questions about Georgia following the 23-point dismantling the Bulldogs suffered at Auburn last week, and the focus entering Saturday’s home game with Kentucky is on defense. The seventh-ranked Bulldogs, who still have a clear shot to reach the College Football Playoff provided they win out through the SEC title game, were shredded for 488 yards last week and face a Wildcats team needing one victory to clinch a winning season in league play for the first time since 1977.

“You have to really focus on the things you did not do well and the things you do,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart told reporters Monday, two days after Georgia’s vaunted rushing duo of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel were held to a combined 48 yards. “We have to go out and play our best game because they have a really good football team.” Kentucky won for the fourth time in its past six games last week, beating Vanderbilt 44-21 as Benny Snell rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns. The Wildcats are 19th in the nation in rushing defense at 121.9 yards per contest. “Hopefully we can continue to build on this and play our best football here down the homestretch,” Kentucky coach Mark Stoops told the media Monday.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (7-3, 4-3 SEC): Snell has rushed for a school-record 28 career touchdowns, and with 1,013 yards rushing is first player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. Linebacker Josh Allen and defensive end Denzil Ware have combined for 215 total tackles and 24 sacks across the past two years, Ware recording two sacks last week in earning SEC Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week. The Wildcats are averaging 35.7 points per game in winning two of their past three contests.

ABOUT GEORGIA (9-1, 6-1): Despite last week’s struggles, the Bulldogs still rank second in the SEC and 10th nationally in rushing offense (256 yards per game). Louisville's defense appears to be rounding into form just as the regular season is winding down. The Cardinals on Saturday host Syracuse, which once again may be short-handed at quarterback, for an ACC contest.

After losing three of its previous four games, Louisville topped Virginia 38-21 last Saturday behind a revitalized defensive effort. The Cardinals gave up only 277 total yards - 63 on the ground - and notched a season-high four sacks. "It seemed like everything was going well," Louisville linebacker James Hearns told reporters. "It was one of the most fun games we played this year." Syracuse had fun in the first half of last week's contest against Wake Forest before a 38-24 halftime advantage turned into a 64-43 defeat.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (4-6, 2-4 ACC): Eric Dungey missed the game versus Wake Forest with a leg injury, but coach Dino Babers said the quarterback's rehab is going well and he may be ready to suit up Saturday. If he can't play, the Orange once again will give the nod to Zack Mahoney, who was 33-of-60 for 384 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions against the Demon Deacons. "I think we can be OK if we have to go with the other guy," Babers told reporters regarding Mahoney, who likely would continue to target Steve Ishmael (92 catches - second-best in the nation).

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (6-4, 3-4): Hearns recorded three sacks last week as Louisville posted its second-biggest margin of victory this season. Quarterback Lamar Jackson was terrific, accounting for four touchdowns - three through the air and one on the ground, where he added 147 yards. In total, Jackson has reached 100 rushing yards seven times this season and has 15 rushing TDs to go with a crisp 21-to-6 touchdown-to-interception ratio through the air.
