      Gracenote
      Nov 20, 2017

Several of the most explosive offensive players in the NHL will be on the ice Monday, when the Washington Capitals host the Calgary Flames. Johnny Gaudreau (29 points) and Sean Monahan, who is coming off his first career hat trick, lead the way for the Flames while captain Alex Ovechkin (13 goals) and Evgeny Kuznetsov (23 points) pace a Washington team that is beginning to turn things around after a slow start.

Calgary has produced 20 goals it its last four games after rebounding from an embarrassing effort in Detroit by rallying for a 5-4 overtime victory at Philadelphia on Saturday thanks to a four-point effort by Monahan. “We needed a bounce-back game,” Monahan told reporters. “Sometimes you don’t win the way you want to, but we stuck with it and we found a way to win, so it’s a big two points for our group.” The Capitals have earned points in seven of 10 games this month (6-3-1) after posting a solid 3-1 victory over Minnesota on Saturday, when Kuznetsov’s power-play goal with 2:37 left sealed things. Washington allowed a total of 12 goals in losing its previous two contests before Braden Holtby, who has recorded seven wins in his last eight starts, shut down the Wild to extend the Capitals’ home winning streak to five games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West, TVA (Calgary), NBCSN Washington Plus

ABOUT THE FLAMES (11-8-0): Calgary’s offense has improved thanks in part to the power play, which has converted seven of its 19 opportunities over the last five contests. However, the penalty-killing unit has allowed nine tallies in the same stretch and plummeted to the bottom of the league at 70.6 percent. Defenseman TJ Brodie has recorded four assists in his last three games and moved into third place on the team in scoring with 14 points while Matthew Tkachuk (13) will be back in the lineup Monday after serving a one-game suspension.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (11-9-1): There are plenty of other weapons to support Kuznetsov and Ovechkin as T.J. Oshie has notched five points in his last three games to push his season total to 17. John Carlson leads the defense with 17 points - 10 in his last nine contests - and the Capitals still are waiting for more production from Nicklas Backstrom, who is mired in a 14-game goal-scoring drought. Holtby has limited opponents to fewer than three goals in six of his last eight games and owns a .924 save percentage this month despite giving up six tallies against Nashville on Tuesday.

      OVERTIME

      1. Flames G Mike Smith has won five of his last six decisions, a stretch that began with a 30-save performance in a 2-1 win over Washington on Oct. 29.

      2. Capitals D Matt Niskanen has registered 12 shots and an assist in three games since missing a month with an upper-body injury.

      3. Calgary C Mikael Backlund is two goals shy of 100 for his career but is in the midst of a nine-game drought despite notching six assists in that span.

      PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Flames 3

          Preview: Jets at Predators

          Gracenote
          Nov 20, 2017

The Winnipeg Jets attempt to extend their winning streak to five contests without one of their top defensemen as they begin a four-game road trip Monday against the Nashville Predators. Winnipeg will be missing Toby Enstrom for up to eight weeks due to a lower-body injury, which he suffered in Saturday's 5-2 victory over New Jersey.

The 33-year-old Swede's offensive production has steadily decreased since he recorded a career-high 51 points during the franchise's final season in Atlanta in 2010-11, but he remains a key figure on the Jets' blue line. "He's been great all year, and anytime you lose a guy who eats up a lot of minutes like him, it's going to be tough," Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler told the team's website. Nashville seeks its fourth straight win at Bridgestone Arena as it continues a three-game homestand. The Predators also posted a 5-2 home victory on Saturday, rolling past Colorado as defenseman Mattias Ekholm extended his goal-scoring streak to three games after tallying just once in his first 16 contests.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), FSN Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE JETS (12-4-3): Winnipeg scored all five of its goals in Saturday's win in a 12 1/2-minute span in the second period as it completed a perfect three-game homestand. Connor Hellebuyck has been strong in the crease for the Jets this season, allowing fewer than three goals in 11 of his 14 starts. Patrik Laine is riding an eight-game point streak (six goals, three assists) while Mark Scheifele has collected 16 points over his last 10 contests.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (11-6-2): Filip Forsberg, who leads the team with 20 points, enters Monday with a four-game streak during which he has collected one goal and five assists. The 23-year-old Swede also tops the club with nine tallies but has netted just one over his last eight contests. Craig Smith scored his third goal in four games in the win over the Avalanche and added an assist to become the eighth member of the team to reach double digits in points.

          OVERTIME

          1. Wheeler leads the Jets with 25 points but has gone six games without a goal.

          2. Nashville LW Viktor Arvidsson has landed on the scoresheet in six of his last seven contests, collecting five goals and three assists in that span.

          3. To replace Enstrom, Winnipeg recalled D Tucker Poolman from Manitoba of the American Hockey League.

          PREDICTION: Predators 3, Jets 2

              Preview: Devils at Wild

              Gracenote
              Nov 20, 2017

The New Jersey Devils hope to avoid a third straight loss when they conclude their four-game road trip Monday against the Minnesota Wild. New Jersey began its trek with a 7-5 triumph in Chicago but was shut out in an overtime loss at Toronto on Thursday and dropped a 5-2 decision in Winnipeg two days later.

The setback against the Jets was just the second regulation loss on the road this season for the Devils but the fourth overall defeat in their last five away from home (1-2-2). Minnesota is seeking its third consecutive home victory as it comes off a 3-1 loss at Washington on Saturday. Nino Niederreiter netted the lone tally for the Wild, extending his goal-scoring streak to three games and his point run to five contests. Jason Zucker's string of consecutive contests with a goal ended at five in the setback, but the 25-year-old leads the team with 11 in 19 games and is halfway toward matching the career high he set in 79 contests last season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), FSN North Plus (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (11-5-3): Rookies Nico Hischier and defenseman Will Butcher are tied for second on the team with 15 points apiece, but they have combined for only four goals - with the latter's first in the NHL coming in Saturday's setback. Brian Gibbons also tallied against the Jets, giving him a club-leading nine on the season - his first in the league since 2014-15 with Columbus. The 29-year-old left wing notched only five assists in 25 games with the Blue Jackets that campaign after recording five goals and 17 points over 41 contests with Pittsburgh as a rookie the previous season.

ABOUT THE WILD (9-8-2): Eric Staal, who leads the team with 17 points, has collected nine over his last seven games. Zucker, who fell one game shy of matching Brian Rolston's franchise record for consecutive contests with a tally, has scored eight of his 11 goals in the third period this season. He also leads the club with three power-play tallies and four game-winners, both of which are career bests.

              OVERTIME

              1. In addition to goals, Gibbons also leads the Devils in plus/minus with a plus-12 rating.

              2. The 18-year-old Hischier has collected eight points over his last eight contests.

              3. Minnesota allowed two power-play goals on Saturday after being perfect on the penalty kill over its previous six games.

              PREDICTION: Devils 3, Wild 1

                  Preview: Ducks at Sharks

                  Nov 20, 2017

The San Jose Sharks aim to avoid a third straight loss as they conclude a string of nine consecutive games in California when they host the Anaheim Ducks on Monday. San Jose has played seven contests at home and one in Los Angeles during its stretch, going 5-3-0 in that span.

Timo Meier scored the lone goal in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Boston, which marked the fifth time in six games the Sharks were limited to fewer than three tallies. Anaheim also will be playing its ninth straight contest in the Golden State, with three more to come before it travels to face Chicago on Nov. 27. The Ducks have gone 3-3-2 over the first eight contests of the 12-game stretch - seven of which were at home, including Sunday's 3-2 triumph against Florida. John Gibson made 50 saves and Rickard Rakell scored his team-leading seventh goal, giving him at least one point in six of his last seven contests.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, FSN West (Anaheim), NBCSN California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (9-7-3): Mike Liambas made his debut for the team Sunday after being recalled from San Diego of the American Hockey League earlier in the day. The 28-year-old left wing, who appeared in his only other NHL game last season with Nashville, recorded seven minutes in penalties in 3 minutes, 43 seconds of ice time. Corey Perry has scored just one goal in his last 18 games after tallying twice in the season opener against Arizona, but he has notched two assists in three of his last four contests.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (10-8-0): Danny O'Regan made his season debut Saturday after being recalled from the AHL's San Jose Barracuda earlier in the day and registered his first NHL assist. The 23-year-old native of Germany, who won the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award last season as the AHL's top rookie, recorded one goal over three games with the Sharks in 2016-17. Joe Thornton is in the midst of a four-game point drought and needs one assist to tie Joe Sakic (1,016) for 12th place on the all-time list.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. The Ducks are three points away from 2,000 in their history (874-716-249).

                  2. The Sharks placed F Barclay Goodrow on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

                  3. Anaheim assigned C Kalle Kossila, who recorded a goal and an assist in seven games, to San Diego.

                  PREDICTION: Sharks 4, Ducks 2

                              Nov 19, 2017

The Minnesota Timberwolves will have a quick turnaround after a late collapse at home when they visit the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. The Timberwolves led by 11 points with under 10 minutes remaining before a cold stretch resulted in a 100-97 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night, snapping the squad's four-game home winning streak.

Minnesota tied a season high with 21 turnovers - five apiece by the starting backcourt of Jeff Teague and Jimmy Butler - in its worst offensive effort on the season. The Hornets were the latest team to pick on the reeling Los Angeles Clippers by winning their Saturday night matchup 102-87. Kemba Walker scored 26 points and Dwight Howard produced 16 points and 16 rebounds as Charlotte snapped a six-game slide, which included a 112-94 setback at Minnesota. Andrew Wiggins led six Timberwolves in double figures with 20 points in that affair, Minnesota's second straight victory in the series.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Southeast (Charlotte)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (10-6): Butler missed a key free throw in the closing seconds Sunday but set season highs with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 42 minutes. He also added five steals - tied for a season high - as Minnesota continued a defensive turnaround by holding its seventh opponent this month to 100 points or fewer. Karl-Anthony Towns fell a rebound shy of his sixth consecutive double-double.

ABOUT THE HORNETS (6-9): Walker was held to a season-low nine points in the loss at Minnesota, but he has scored at least 20 points in all five games since while averaging 26.8 points. He has buried 14-of-27 from 3-point range over the last three games while committing a total of two turnovers in 113 minutes. "I have been struggling to start the season with shooting the 3, but I am trying to stay positive and confident in my shot," Walker told the media. "I just want to continue to be consistent."

                              BUZZER BEATERS

                              1. Teague shot 1-for-7 and finished with three points - one more than his season low - in Sunday's loss.
