South Florida Bulls at Central Florida Knights (-10, 62.5)

The annual War on I-4 has never been more important as undefeated Central Florida hosts South Florida on Friday afternoon with a spot in the American Athletic Conference Championship on the line. The 12th-ranked Knights have rolled along while scoring at least 31 points in all 10 victories while USF dropped one contest to Houston, but its senior-laden lineup is primed to reach their first conference title game.

“We’ve really been waiting for this game since last year,” UCF junior receiver Tre’Quan Smith told reporters of last season’s 48-31 loss - the second straight in the series. “We all remember what happened last year and basically, it’s like payback. We’re ready to go to war.” The Knights are led by sophomore quarterback McKenzie Milton, who has thrown for almost 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns while completing 69.6 percent of his passes for the nation’s top scoring offense (48.2). Senior quarterback Quinton Flowers keys the South Florida offense with 17 scoring strikes and nine touchdowns on the ground with a team-high 870 rushing yards while the Bulls are tied for second in the nation with 17 interceptions. “We have not put together a complete game yet,” USF coach Charlie Strong told reporters. “It’s maybe one half on offense and then the next half the defense steps up. … In all three phases, we have yet to see a complete game and we need a complete game this game. That’s what it’s going to take - a total team effort.”

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (9-1 SU, 4-6 ATS, 3-7 O/U): Flowers has been the most prolific offensive player in school history and rushed for at least 119 yards in three of his last four games, but completed 53.5 percent of passes during his senior season thus far. The Bulls have plenty of offensive weapons to support Flowers with senior running backs Darius Tice (860 yards, 10 TDs rushing) and D’Ernest Johnson (715, seven) along with senior receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (48 catches, 737 yards). USF will need a big effort from its inconsistent defense, which is led by senior linebacker Auggie Sanchez (school-record 378 career tackles) and has allowed 19.9 points per contest.

ABOUT CENTRAL FLORIDA (10-0 SU, 6-3-1 ATS, 6-4 O/U): Milton, who threw for 225 yards with two interceptions against USF last year, has not been picked off while tossing six touchdown strikes in the last two contests. Smith is the top target for Milton with 44 catches for 850 yards and 11 scores, and sophomore running back Adrian Killins Jr. is a key home run threat with 629 yards along with eight touchdowns on the ground. “(Killins) might not fit a lot of schemes but he definitely fits ours,” UCF coach Scott Frost told reporters as his team goes for its first AAC title game appearance. “He’s not the biggest guy in the world but he’s got elite speed, and we knew we could use that in our system.”

Points have been at a premium for the Portland Trail Blazers, who may finally have a chance to post some gaudy offensive numbers when they visit the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. The Blazers shot a season-low 33.7 percent in a 101-81 loss at Philadelphia on Wednesday, their widest margin of defeat of the season.

While its defense has often been superb, Portland is averaging just 94.6 points during a 4-4 stretch. "I think we defended hard. I think it was just another case of us struggling on the offensive end," guard Damian Lillard told reporters in Philadelphia. "We just weren't able to put up points." That could change against the Nets, who entered Thanksgiving allowing 114.2 points per game, the second-highest average in the NBA. It was more of the same in a 119-109 loss at Cleveland on Wednesday, Brooklyn's fourth defeat in the last five games since a four-point victory at Portland on Nov. 10.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (10-8): Lillard scored 30 points while his fellow starters combined for 22 on 8-of-32 shooting, with CJ McCollum the primary culprit with a woeful 1-for-14 showing. McCollum's five-point effort marked his first single-digit result this season and the 26-year-old's worst output in the regular season since April 13, 2015 (four points). Shabazz Napier provided a silver lining off the bench with 13 points, four assists and two steals, and he has scored in double digits in three straight games for the first time since Nov. 2014.

ABOUT THE NETS (6-11): The Nets already knocked off the Cavaliers once this season and they were tied entering the fourth quarter in the rematch, but simply didn't have the personnel to hang with LeBron James down the stretch. "It's tough. Obviously he's been tops in this league from the moment he got into it, and he really hasn't shown any signs of letting up," guard Joe Harris told the New York Post. "We did a good job containing him until that point," Harris said. "But he shows why he's the best player in the world and took over down the stretch." Rondae-Hollis Jefferson scored 20 points in the loss while Harris came off the bench to provide 18 on 7-of-10 shooting as Brooklyn fell to 4-4 at home.

Captain Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom were reunited for the first time this season Wednesday and the shuffled lines gave the Washington Capitals a boost that led to five goals along with a win. The two All-Stars combined for a goal and an assist last time out and are likely to skate together again Friday when the Capitals host the NHL-best Tampa Bay Lightning, who start a four-game trip.

“If you love something, you set it free,” Washington coach Barry Trotz told reporters after the 5-2 victory over Ottawa on Wednesday. “If it comes back, it was meant to be.” Thomas Wilson joined Backstrom and Ovechkin on one line while the second unit of Jakub Vrana-Evgeny Kuznetsov-T.J. Oshie combined for seven points in the victory, and the Capitals will need more of the same as they face the league’s top scoring team Friday. The Lightning have yet to lose back-to-back games and kept it that way by rallying from a two-goal deficit for a 3-2 overtime victory over Chicago on Wednesday as the NHL’s top point-getter Steven Stamkos (36) set up Brayden Point for the winner on the power play. “Down 2-0 to a team as good as Chicago, it was a great bounce-back performance in the second, third and overtime for our group,” Stamkos said. “Now we go on the road feeling a little better about ourselves.”

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (16-3-2): Right wing Ryan Callahan registered his first multi-point game of the season Wednesday while playing with center Cedric Paquette, who returned to the lineup after missing 13 games with an injury, and Chris Kunitz. “I thought (Callahan) was the best player on the ice for both teams,” Stamkos said. “It inspired the rest of the group. … Watching those guys go out there motivates you when things aren’t go well.” Nikita Kucherov has gone without a point the last two games, but went into the holiday leading the NHL with 17 goals and second with 33 points.

The Vegas Golden Knights continue to defy logic as they try for their eighth straight home victory when they host the San Jose Sharks on Friday in the teams' first meeting. Vegas (13-6-1) matched the NHL record for victories by an expansion team in its first 20 games set by the 1917-18 Montreal Canadiens with a 4-2 victory at Anaheim on Wednesday behind No. 4 goaltender Maxime Lagace, who was making his 10th straight start.

With No. 1 Marc-Andre Fleury still recovering from a concussion and No. 2 Malcolm Subban recently activated off injured reserve, Lagace (5-5-1, 3.50 goals-against average, .873 save percentage) has helped the Golden Knights take over first place in the Pacific Division despite some not-so-stellar numbers. "It's a big win tonight," Vegas coach Gerard Gallant told reporters Wednesday. "I thought our team played excellent all night long, and somebody said we are in first place. Is that official? Perfect." San Jose snapped a three-game losing streak (0-2-1) and improved to 5-2 on the road with a 3-1 victory at Arizona on Wednesday - the first time it has scored more than two goals in five games - as the league's fourth-worst offense struggles at 2.45 goals per contest. "We got enough offense to win. That's all that matters," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer told reporters. "Come on the road, tough environment, they're playing well, I thought we played a good road game."

The disappointing Edmonton Oilers hope to build some momentum after their last performance when they visit the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Friday night. Edmonton, a preseason Stanley Cup pick by many which currently sits second-to-last in the Western Conference, snapped a three-game slide with an impressive 6-2 victory at Detroit on Wednesday.

“Everybody came here with something to prove, a chip on their shoulder, and it showed up,” Oilers center Mark Letestu told reporters Wednesday. “I guess we’ll answer the question about whether we can do it for more than one night, next game. There’s been a lot of lip service that this is the one that can change things, but we have to show up Friday in Buffalo.” Connor McDavid boasts nine of his team-leading 28 points in the last five games for Edmonton, which will face a Sabres team that has dropped seven straight contests (0-5-2). Buffalo managed one goal in four of those outings and the defense had a rough night Wednesday in a 5-4 setback against Minnesota. “We’ve got to figure it out,” Sabres defenseman Marco Scandella told the Buffalo News. “We’re going to need more pride in this locker room. The only way to get out of this is if we work together and find a way to show up to the rink and give 100 percent effort every single night.”
