      Preview: Jets at Panthers

      Gracenote
      Dec 6, 2017

The Winnipeg Jets have surged into contention for the top spot in both the Central Division and Western Conference on the heels of a 9-3-1 run. All four losses in that stretch have come away from home for the Jets, who will look to halt that trend when they continue a three-game road trip with a visit to the Florida Panthers on Thursday night.

Winnipeg dropped out of the lead in the Central following Tuesday's 5-1 loss at Detroit, but its special teams have been outstanding in the first three games this month. The Jets have converted 7 of 16 chances with the man advantage while killing off all 14 short-handed situations. The Panthers have dropped three in a row -- all by one goal -- and now must cope with the loss of starting netminder Roberto Luongo, who was injured in Monday's shootout loss to the New York Islanders. Coach Bob Boughner on Wednesday said Luongo will be out for an "extended period of time. Whether that's three weeks, four weeks, five weeks, (we'll) see how his rehab goes."

      TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), FSN Florida, NHL.TV

ABOUT THE JETS (17-7-4): Forward Patrik Laine, who finished second to Toronto's Auston Matthews in the Calder Trophy voting last season, admitted he was struggling with his confidence after failing to hit the scoresheet in the final three games of November. A 36-goal scorer last season, Laine has quickly turned things around, scoring in each of his last three games to tie Mark Scheifele for the team lead with 14 goals. Laine's tally Monday night made him the ninth player since 1987 to score 50 goals in his first 101 games.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (10-13-4): James Reimer saw ample experience playing time during 5 1/2 seasons in Toronto and made 39 starts in his first year with Florida in 2016-17, posting an 18-16-5 record with a 2.53 goals-against average and .920 save percentage. He is 4-6-3 with a 3.67 GAA this season and has surrendered at least three goals in 10 of his 14 appearances. "All I ask of him, and he knows this, is to give us a chance to win," Boughner said. "And if he gives us a chance to win, we'll be in every game."

      OVERTIME

      1. Panthers C Aleksander Barkov has scored goals in four of the past five games.

      2. Jets captain Blake Wheeler has one goal and seven assists during a three-game point streak.

      3. Florida recalled G Harri Satteri from Springfield of the American Hockey League.

      PREDICTION: Jets 4, Panthers 3

          Preview: Stars at Blues

          Gracenote
          Dec 6, 2017

The St. Louis Blues halted a three-game slide by cooling off one of the league's hottest teams and now will look to do the same against another opponent that had been on a roll. After an impressive road victory that ended Montreal's five-game winning streak, St. Louis returns to Central Division play to host the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.

The Blues managed only four goals during the three-game skid before matching that total in the 4-3 win over the Canadiens, improving to 9-3-2 on the road. St. Louis has dropped three of its last four at home, but it knocked off Dallas 4-2 at Scottrade Center on Oct. 7 to post its fourth consecutive victory in the series. The resurgent Stars had its five-game winning streak snapped in a 5-2 home loss to Central-leading Nashville and now must regroup on the road against another division rival. "St. Louis is a great team, and it's going to be tough to play in their building," Dallas captain Jamie Benn said. "They're pretty good at home, so we'll have our hands full."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), FSN Midwest (St. Louis), NHL.TV

ABOUT THE STARS (16-11-1): Starting netminder Ben Bishop, pulled from Tuesday's loss after surrendering three goals on 15 shots, is dealing with a sore back and will not be available Thursday, putting Kari Lehtonen in line for his seventh start of the season. "We're assuming he will be fine for the weekend, but he's not on the trip," coach Ken Hitchcock said of Bishop. Lehtonen gave up four goals in the loss at St. Louis in October to fall to 13-7-3 with a 2.26 goals-against average versus the Blues.

ABOUT THE BLUES (18-8-2): With St. Louis struggling offensively, coach Mike Yeo resisted the urge to reunite the line that carried the team for much of the early season and it paid off when Brayden Schenn completed a hat trick with the decisive goal in Montreal. Schenn is halfway to his career-best total of 26 goals, established with Philadelphia in 2015-16. Jaden Schwartz collected two assists Tuesday to boost his team-best total to 34 points, and also had a goal and an assist versus Dallas in October.

          OVERTIME

          1. Dallas is 1-for-26 on the power play over the past eight games.

          2. Blues G Jake Allen is 7-2-0 with a 2.29 goals-against average versus Dallas.

          3. Stars F Antoine Roussel (illness), out the past three games, practiced Wednesday and said he felt fine.

          PREDICTION: Blues 4, Stars 2

              Preview: Flyers at Canucks

              Gracenote
              Dec 7, 2017

The Vancouver Canucks have battled their way into a playoff position in the Western Conference and have no intention of going anywhere soon as they host the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. The Canucks, who have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons and three of the past four, have posted three straight victories and can match their best run of the campaign by beating the rejuvenated Flyers.

Vancouver has allowed four goals during its winning streak after 27-year-old Swede Jacob Markstrom recorded his first shutout in his 129th career game Tuesday, a 3-0 victory over Carolina that allowed the Canucks to climb into third place in the Pacific Division. Vancouver hopes to match its 5-2 victory on Nov. 21 at Philadelphia, which has posted back-to-back triumphs over Calgary and Edmonton after enduring a 10-game losing streak (0-5-5). The Flyers limited Edmonton to 26 shots on Wednesday while receiving two points each from captain Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds in a 4-2 triumph and improved to 6-5-3 on the road and 2-0-0 on its three-game Western Canada trip. The Flyers have won two straight games for just the second time this season and managed nine goals after being held to one over their previous two contests.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Philadelphia, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE FLYERS (10-11-7): Jakub Voracek notched his fourth assist on the trip Wednesday and leads the team with 34 points while Giroux reached 30, and fellow forward Sean Couturier gives Philadelphia three players with at least 28. Simmonds registered his first multi-point performance since Oct. 21 as he posted a goal for the second straight contest and added an assist. Michael Raffl registered three points over the first 26 games of the season and has matched that amount in his last two contests with two goals and an assist.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (14-10-4): Defenseman Derrick Pouliot was acquired from Pittsburgh in an early-season trade and has made a solid impact - no more so than on Tuesday, when he recorded a goal and two assists. “I’m starting to add things to my game,” Pouliot, a former first-round pick, told reporters. “So, if I’m playing well defensively, that’s where it starts, and I can add the offensive stuff after that.” Second-leading scorer Bo Horvat (19 points) left Tuesday’s game with what coach Travis Green said was “a small injury” and his status for Thursday is uncertain.

              OVERTIME

              1. Philadelphia C Valtteri Filppula has produced a goal and two assists on the trip after posting just two points in his previous 11 games.

              2. Vancouver RW Brock Boeser tops the team with 25 points but has not registered one in four of his last five contests.

              3. The Flyers placed G Michal Neuvirth and D Brandon Manning on injured reserve with undisclosed injuries.

              PREDICTION: Canucks 4, Flyers 3

                  Preview: Senators at Kings

                  Gracenote
                  Dec 7, 2017

Two teams heading in opposite directions face off Thursday as the surging Los Angeles Kings host the slumping Ottawa Senators. Los Angeles has followed a three-game slide with a winning streak that reached six games with Tuesday's 5-2 triumph over Minnesota in the opener of its three-game homestand.

Captain Anze Kopitar and defenseman Drew Doughty registered three points apiece while Marian Gaborik scored twice for the Kings, who are tied with Nashville for most points in the Western Conference (39). Ottawa fell to 1-3-0 on its seven-game road trip after dropping a 3-0 decision at Anaheim on Wednesday. It marked the second straight shutout loss for the Senators, who have lost six of their last seven away from home and nine of 10 overall (1-8-1). Ottawa has scored fewer than three goals in all but one of those contests, getting shut out three times in that span.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TSN5, RDS (Ottawa), FSN West (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE SENATORS (9-11-6): Captain Erik Karlsson has been kept off the scoresheet in 10 straight games after recording 17 points in his previous 10 contests. The 27-year-old Swedish defenseman has reached double digits in goals in each of his last six full seasons but has scored just one over his first 21 contests of 2017-18. Mark Stone, who leads the team in both goals (14) and points (25), recorded a point in five consecutive games before Ottawa's back-to-back shutout losses.

ABOUT THE KINGS (18-8-3): Gaborik entered Tuesday's game with 400 career assists and exited with the same amount of goals, giving him 800 points. The 35-year-old Slovakian has appeared in only seven contests due to offseason knee surgery and is four shy of 1,000 for his career. Kopitar also reached a milestone against the Wild as his second assist of the game was his 500th in the NHL.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. The Kings' winning streak is their longest since a six-game run from Nov. 28-Dec. 11, 2015.

                  2. Senators C Derick Brassard is one point shy of 400 for his career while RW Alex Burrows needs one assist to reach 200 in the NHL.

                  3. Doughty has collected 11 points over his last 11 games.

                  PREDICTION: Kings 5, Senators 2

                      Preview: Hurricanes at Sharks

                      Gracenote
                      Dec 6, 2017

The San Jose Sharks may have a defenseman to step in for the suspended Brenden Dillon on Thursday, as Paul Martin is champing at the bit to get back on the ice. Martin hopes to be activated off injured reserve in time as the Sharks open a three-game homestand against the Carolina Hurricanes.

"Any time you're trying to get that strength up and get ready and make sure you're in tip-top shape, you live and you learn of what you can do and not do - and you find out there's some other parts of the body that you didn't know you could get sore." Martin told the San Jose Mercury News. The 36-year-old, who hasn't played since Oct. 8 due to an undisclosed injury, hopes to have a chance in preventing the Sharks from matching a season-high three-game losing skid on Thursday. Carolina fell for the fifth time in seven outings with Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Vancouver to open a season-high six-game road trip. "We need to put together a full 60 minutes. We've had good periods here and good periods there, but we haven't put together a good, full 60 minutes ... game after game," forward Derek Ryan said.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FSN Carolinas, NBCSN California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (11-10-5): Defenseman Justin Faulk zeroed in on Carolina's troubles in the second period, during which it has been outscored 10-2 over the last six games. "Second periods have been tough for us as of late," Faulk said. "We need to carry those first periods over to the second to build a game and try to win." Faulk, who is one point shy of 200 for his career, has been held off the scoresheet in five straight contests following a three-game point streak.
ABOUT THE SHARKS (14-10-2): Joe Thornton may have a bit of gray in his ever-growing beard, but that didn't prevent the 38-year-old from dropping the gloves in a spirited tussle with Tom Wilson during Monday's 4-1 setback at Washington. Thornton is more comfortable putting points on the board, as Carolina would attest, with the veteran recording 15 (three goals, 12 assists) in 14 career encounters versus the Hurricanes - including nine (one goal, eight assists) in seven home games. Logan Couture leads the team in goals (13) and points (21), but has failed to dent the scoresheet in each of his last three games.

                      OVERTIME

                      1. San Jose RW Joonas Donskoi skated in practice for the first time since sustaining an injury to his midsection against Philadelphia on Nov. 28.

                      2. Carolina G Scott Darling has turned aside 116 of 128 shots in his last five games, but has a 1-3-1 mark to show for it.

                      3. Sharks G Martin Jones has yielded nine goals in two starts since returning from a lower-body injury.

                      PREDICTION: Sharks 4, Hurricanes 1
