7-Unit Play. #523 Take Georgia Southern (-1.5) over George Mason (7 p.m., Tuesday, December 12)
The line change tells the story here. Georgia Southern opened as a small dog and rightly swung into a road favorite. Simply put, the Eagles are a loaded mid-major this season. Five starters are back, two of which were the top two scorers in the Sun Belt a season ago. This team is scoring more than 84 points per game, compared to nearly 15 less from the Patriots. This GMU team is missing its best two players from 2016-17, and clearly its a step backward because of their collective absence. Nearly 30 points and 16 rebounds per game need to be made up from the departed Marquise Moore and Jalen Jenkins, and for at least tonight they won't do that against a superior opponent. George Mason is 5-5 and three losses came by double digits. This game tonight will result in a fourth. Georgia Southern ranks first in the country in offensive rebounds, and with GMU's best two rebounders gone from the program, this is going to be a huge edge for the Eagles. This match-up offers the best value for Tuesday' schedule. That's because relative to the short line, there is an even bigger margin of talent and overiding contrast between these two programs. Georgia Southern starts a six-game road trip tonight. Coming off back-to-back blowout home wins, this is another high value assessment to get on the Eagles here before any road trip effects kick in. Fresh and focused, Georgia Southern runs past George Mason, win by 15.
5-Unit Play. #532 Take Iona (-3) over Yale (7 p.m., Tuesday, December 12)
Yale continues to miss senior leader Mason Makai, and going into a difficult venue to get a win, Iona is the play here. The Gaels have played just one home game in the first month of the year, so they are going to be very motivated to be getting back on their own campus again. Yale has already played eight road games, but they've been beat up for the most part with five losses. Of those five losses, the Bulldogs have lost by an average of 17 points, and all by at least eight points. The Gaels come into this one winners of three straight, so momentum is with them as they get back to their home digs. Lay the number with them to take care of business and get back over .500 for the year.
5-Unit Play. #537 Take Murray State (-1.5) over Saint Louis (8 p.m., Tuesday, December 12)
Unlike the above play with Georgia Southern, oddsmakers got this favorite correct. But similar to that play, its should be a bigger number in their favor. Murray State has started the year at 6-1 and made quick work to forget last season's medicore 16-17 campaign. Saint Louis will be better with Travis Ford at the helm, but this team is still very much a work in progress. The Billikens got four transfers, but two are still not able to play. Saint Louis has shown its still in transition mode, losers of five of their last six games. Four of these losses were blowouts and three came at home. Murray State is the more seasoned product and known commodity today, and for that money is on them to score the road victory and continue their fast start in non-conference play.
