Preview: Providence at St. John's

Getting a healthy Kyron Cartwright back will be critical for Providence when its plays its Big East opener Thursday at St. John's. Cartwright was hobbled by an ankle injury in a loss to Houston before missing the Friars' victory over Sacred Heart and is considered day-to-day for the 111th meeting with the Red Storm.

Cartwright entered December averaging 12.3 points and 7.0 assists, but has mustered only 3.4 points and 3.8 assists per game in the five games he has played this month. Alpha Diallo, the team's second-leading scorer, has also been dealing with an ankle injury and has missed three of the last four games while also playing sparingly against Houston. The Friars will need all hands on deck to deal with a much-improved St. John's team, which boasts five players in double figures, led by Shamorie Ponds. The sophomore is averaging 20.4 points, good for third in the Big East, despite shooting less 39.6 percent from the field and 21.1 from deep.

ABOUT PROVIDENCE (9-4): The injuries to Cartwright and Diallo have thrust Isaiah Jackson into a starting role and the junior as acquitted himself well. The 6-6 guard has averaged 32.7 minutes, 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds over the past three games and added six assists in last week's win over Sacred Heart. "I feel like I just need to play my role," Jackson, a native of Gainesville, Fla., told the media. "Just go out and do what I do to the best of my ability."

ABOUT ST. JOHN'S (10-2): Marcus LoVett, who scored in double figures in six of the first seven games, has a knee injury that has kept him out of the last five games for the Red Storm. Bashir Ahmed, who has scored in double figures in 35 of 45 career games, scored in double digits three times in the last five games and had a pair of 10-plus rebound contests while playing extended minutes. Simon has also played more with LoVett's injury, and had a pair of double-doubles in past five contests while just missed a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists against Saint Joseph's.

Preview: Pacific at Gonzaga

Gonzaga has won or shared 16 of the 17 West Coast Conference regular season championships and returns two key starters from a team that made it all the way to the NCAA title game last April. But the 19th-ranked Bulldogs, who open conference play on Thursday night against visiting Pacific, were picked to finish second behind Saint Mary's in the annual poll of WCC head coaches before the season.

Don't think that slight went unnoticed by Gonzaga players, who landed just one of 10 first place votes in the poll. The Gaels may have four returning starters from a squad that went 29-5 and lost 69-60 to Arizona in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but the Bulldogs swept all three meetings with Saint Mary's a year ago including a 74-56 beat-down in the WCC Tournament final. So Gonzaga enters WCC play with a chip on its shoulder even though it is the only team ranked from the conference. "For sure (it's) motivation," senior guard Silas Melson told the Spokane Spokesman-Review. "We're just coming off a game we 100 percent think we could have won (71-65 NCAA championship game loss to North Carolina) and then people thinking we could come in second to Saint Mary's ... we're ready to go instantly."

ABOUT PACIFIC (5-8, 0-0 WCC): The Tigers, picked eighth in the WCC preseason poll, limp into conference play with a four-game losing streak and off a 105-65 loss at No.4 Arizona State on Friday but gave Mountain West heavyweight UNLV a scare at home in the game before that, losing 81-76. Junior forward Jack Williams and junior guard Miles Reynolds, a transfer from Saint Louis, both had 13 points in the loss to the Sun Devils with Williams also grabbing nine rebounds as Pacific outrebounded Arizona State, 41-40. Junior guard Roberto Gallinat leads the team in scoring (13.7) with Reynolds (11.8) and junior forward Anthony Townes (10.2) also averaging in double figures.

ABOUT GONZAGA (10-3, 0-0): The Zags come in off a 72-70 loss at San Diego State last Thursday, a game they turned it over 16 times while shooting just 42.4 percent from the floor. Five players are averaging in double figures led by versatile 6-9 senior forward Johnathan Williams (15.2) and 6-foot-3 junior guard Josh Perkins (14.0), both preseason all-WCC picks by the coaches and also returning starters from the NCAA runner-up squad. Guard Zach Norvell Jr. (13.2), one of the top freshmen on the west coast, 6-10 sophomore forward Killian Tillie (12.3) and Melson (10.5) also are averaging in double digits.

I think it's worth a shot here on the OVER in Thursday's showdown between the Celtics and Rockets. Houston will be without two of their top defensive guys in Capela and Mbah a Moute, plus there's also a good chance that Paul doesn't play. Without these defensive guys in the lineup Houston's defense has slipped of late, as they have allowed 122 to the Lakers, 128 to the Clippers and 112 to OKC in their last 3 games. Boston has scored 100+ in 3 straight and are averaging 105+ ppg at home. I know the Celtics have a solid defense, but it's going to be hard for them to play up to their potential on that side playing on no rest after last night's game in Charlotte, where 4 of the 5 starters played 30+ minutes. On top of that, there's not many defenses out there than can slow down this Houston offense and the Rockets will have fresh legs tonight, as this will be just their 2nd game in the last 6 days. I think there's a good chance both teams score 110+ points and this thing flies over the mark. Give me the OVER 216.5!

My money is on the Blazers laying a short number here at home against the 76ers. Philadelphia has a ton of young talent and people really got excited about this team with how well they started out the season, but the 76ers have been way overvalued by the books because of it. Philadelphia is a mere 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games and are just 2-9 SU in their last 11. Portland on the other hand is working on a 7-2 ATS run and are going to be extremely motivated to get a win here against the 76ers, who embarrassed them in Philadelphia earlier this season 101-81. Big key here is the Blazers are also coming in with fresh legs, as they have had the last 4 days off. It's been a profitable spot to back them of late, as they are 3-0 ATS in their last 3 when playing with 3 or more days of rest. I'm recommending a play on the Blazers -3.5 tonight!

The Portland Trail Blazers are now fully healthy with Damian Lillard returning to the lineup from a two-game absence. His presence is huge on this team as he ranks sixth in the NBA in scoring at 26.2 points per game.
Now the Blazers will be highly motivated to end a six-game home losing streak against some very good competition. It’s a rare home losing streak for this team as they usually have one of the better home-court advantages in the NBA.
Now the slumping Philadelphia 76ers come to town having to travel all the way out West. The 76ers are just 2-9 SU & 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall. I don’t expect their slide to end here in this difficult spot against a motivated Blazers team.
Home-court advantage has been huge in this series. The home team is 6-0 SU & 4-2 ATS in the last six meetings. Philadelphia is 1-8 ATS after failing to cover four of their last five against the spread this season. The Blazers are 4-0 ATS in their last four games when playing on 3 or more days’ rest. I understand it's tough to get behind the Orlando Magic, losers of nine in a row. The Magic's losing skid began when Aaron Gordon went out with an injury. But there's a good chance Gordon returns for this matchup. Orlando does have back Evan Fournier from an ankle injury. Gordon and Fournier are Orlando's two leading scorers averaging 18 points a game. Rookie power forward Jonathan Isaac also has returned to the rotation from an ankle injury. He's one Orlando's better defensive players. Detroit has injury problems of its own. Underrated guard Avery Bradley is questionable and point guard Reggie Jackson is out with a serious ankle sprain. That means extended minutes at the point for journeymen Ish Smith and Langston Galloway. Detroit went 11-10 last season when Smith operated the point during Jackson's absence. The Pistons are a mediocre team especialy without Jackson. Mediocre teams shouldn't be laying mid-size points on the road. The Pistons are at their worst, too, in this type of road situation covering just 32 percent of the time the past 59 times they've played a foe with a losing home mark. The Pistons are 3-10-1 ATS the last 14 times facing an opponent with a winning percentage below .400. These two teams just met 11 days ago and the Pistons won 114-110 at home. Jackson scored 17 points in that game, while neither Fournier nor Gordon played. Now Jackson is out, Fournier is in and Gordon may play, too.
