      Dec 30, 2017

The Minnesota Wild have been sharp in two games since the holiday break and vie for a third straight victory over a Central Division opponent when they visit the Nashville Predators on Saturday. The Wild knocked off visiting Dallas 4-2 on Wednesday before outlasting Nashville at home by the same score on Friday in the opener of the back-to-back set.

Mikael Granlund recorded his second career hat trick on Friday as Minnesota welcomed the return of Devan Dubnyk, who made 41 saves in a dazzling effort after missing the previous six contests with a lower-body injury. While the Wild are beginning to turn things around, the Predators have hit a speed bump with just one victory in their last five games (1-3-1) after earning at least one point in seven straight contests to start the month (6-0-1). Nashville dropped out of first place in the Central after Winnipeg’s victory over the New York Islanders on Friday and could be without leading scorer Filip Forsberg (34 points) against the Wild after the forward left the last game with an undisclosed ailment. Defenseman P.K. Subban has raised his production level with nine points in his last eight games after notching a goal and an assist in Friday’s setback.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE WILD (20-15-3): Granlund has led the way over the last two games with four goals and an assist to push his season total to 27 points, which ties him for second on the team with Jason Zucker. “He was making plays,” coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters of Granlund. “(The puck) was like a yo-yo on his stick tonight. When he gets like that, he’s as good as there is.” Eric Staal notched an assist in Friday’s victory and tops the Wild with 33 points while defenseman Ryan Suter also set up a goal and has registered six points in his last six games.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (22-10-5): Kyle Turris scored one of the club's two goals in Friday’s loss, giving him 18 points in 22 games since being acquired from Ottawa in a three-team trade. Forsberg tops the team with 15 goals but has not recorded one in the last seven games and Subban moved into second place on the Predators with 27 points - one more than forward Kevin Fiala. Pekka Rinne made 34 saves in Friday’s loss, dropping to 19-7-3 this season, and could sit out on the second night of the back-to-back set in favor of Juuse Saros (3-3-2, .918 save percentage).

      OVERTIME

      1. Nashville RW Viktor Arvidsson has gone seven games without a goal after recording eight in his previous 19 contests.

      2. Minnesota LW Zach Parise played with Iowa of the American Hockey League on a conditioning stint Thursday, recording an assist, and could make his 2017-18 debut soon.

      3. The Wild has won five of the last seven meetings, including both matchups this season while totaling 10 goals.

      PREDICTION: Predators 5, Wild 2

          Preview: Kings at Canucks
          Gracenote
          Dec 29, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings will attempt to rebound after dropping a showdown for supremacy in the Pacific Division when they open a three-game Western Canada swing at the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Los Angeles has stumbled of late with losses in five of its last seven games (2-3-2), including four of five on the road.

The Kings had a chance to move back into first place in the division but came up on the short end of a 3-2 overtime decision to expansion Vegas on Thursday night. "We were lucky to get one point," said defenseman Drew Doughty after Los Angeles was outshot 39-28 on its home ice. "In some ways, I don't even think we deserved a point." Vancouver halted a four-game slide and won for only the second time in 10 games (2-7-1) as its newly configured top line amassed 12 points in a 5-2 trouncing of Chicago on Thursday. The Canucks rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 3-2 victory at Los Angeles on Nov. 14, their third victory in the past four meetings.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), CBC, Sportsnet (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE KINGS (22-11-5): Doughty was held off the scoresheet in last month's loss to Vancouver, but he has three goals and 14 assists in 20 games since, including one of each in Thursday's setback to Vegas. Doughty needs one goal to tie Steve Duchesne (99) for second on the franchise list for defensemen. Jonathan Quick is 16-15-2 lifetime against the Canucks, a deceptive mark given his 1.66 goals-against average and .938 save percentage against them.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (16-17-5): Veteran Thomas Vanek, in his third game paired with Sam Gagner and rookie sensation Brock Boeser, had a hand in all five goals Thursday - scoring twice and collecting three assists - to give him 12 goals and 28 points on the season. Boeser scored for the fourth consecutive game and notched his eighth goal in 10 contests for a team-high 21 tallies. "It's been a blast," Boeser told reporters. "Just based off of last game, I thought our chemistry was building."

          OVERTIME

          1. The Kings have the league's top-ranked penalty kill with a success rate of 87 percent.

          2. Since collecting an assist at Los Angeles on Nov. 14, Boeser has 16 goals in 20 games.

          3. Los Angeles has struggled in division play, posting a 3-4-3 mark against Pacific foes.

          PREDICTION: Kings 3, Canucks 1

                      Preview: Spurs at Pistons
                      Gracenote
                      Dec 30, 2017

The Detroit Pistons are playing down to the level of their competition of late, and that strategy backfired on them Thursday night. The Pistons will try to take care of business on Saturday, when they take a step up in competition by hosting the San Antonio Spurs.

Detroit was missing its starting backcourt combination of Avery Bradley (groin) and Reggie Jackson (ankle) on Thursday in a 102-89 loss to the Orlando Magic, but coach Stan Van Gundy was not interested in using that as an excuse. "It didn't have anything to do with being without guys to be quite honest," Van Gundy told reporters. "We weren't ready to play at the beginning. Our starting lineup was not prepared to play, didn't bring anything to the game. ... We don't need everybody to have great nights, but we can't have that many guys have that bad a night and think we're going to get wins." The Spurs are winners of three straight and six of their last seven games as LaMarcus Aldridge continues to carry the load. Aldridge scored 25 points on Thursday as San Antonio skipped past the Knicks 119-107 despite resting Kawhi Leonard.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (San Antonio), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE SPURS (25-11): The frontcourt combination of Aldridge and Pau Gasol is operating in high gear of late, and Gasol filled up the box score with 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in Thursday's win. The 37-year-old recorded a double-double in each of the last three games, starting with a triple-double in last Saturday's 108-99 win at Sacramento. Leonard continues to be brought along slowly by the team after missing the first 27 with a quad injury and logged a season-high 26 minutes in Tuesday's win over Brooklyn before taking the night off on Thursday.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (19-15): Jackson's injury elevated Ish Smith to the starting point guard spot, leaving Langston Galloway to run the second unit. That second unit shot a combined 3-of-22 from the floor on Thursday and totaled 12 points, including three points on 1-of-9 shooting and one assist for Galloway. "I think we were just trying to still get used to playing with each other again and taking this game as a hit on the chin and we have to get better," Galloway told reporters. "They came out with a lot of energy and outplayed us."

                      BUZZER BEATERS

                      1. Pistons C Andre Drummond grabbed 18 rebounds in each of the last two games and is enjoying a string of four straight double-doubles.

                      2. Spurs SG Danny Green is 7-of-12 from the floor in two games since returning from a groin injury.

                      3. San Antonio took the last six in the series, including a 96-93 home win on Dec. 4.

                      PREDICTION: Spurs 109, Pistons 106

                          Preview: Heat at Magic
                          Gracenote
                          Dec 30, 2017

The Miami Heat will have little time to recover from an embarrassing defeat when they visit the Orlando Magic on Saturday. After winning seven of 10 to match their high-water mark at two games above .500, the Heat were crushed 111-87 by Brooklyn on Friday in the finale of a four-game homestand.

"I'm speechless about it," coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters. "I don't know. We will keep on fighting and digging until we figure it out. I can guarantee you that. ... We have a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde quality to us that's extremely perplexing. Sometimes we compete at an extremely high level. You can see it, you can feel it. And then we have these games that are unexplainable." The Magic snapped a nine-game losing streak by defeating Detroit at home on Thursday. Elfrid Payton finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Orlando, which is aiming to win two straight for the first time since Nov. 8-10. Included in the Magic's nine-game slide was an 18-point setback at Miami the day after Christmas.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Miami), FSN Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE HEAT (18-17): Josh Richardson scored 19 points and Hassan Whiteside added 17 in Friday's loss, but their teammates combined to shoot a woeful 25.8 percent. Leading scorer Goran Dragic recorded 11 points on 3-of-12 shooting and is 14-for-45 - including 1-for-11 from 3-point range - in three games since returning from an elbow injury. Wayne Ellington missed all six of his 3-point attempts in the defeat after making 17 over his previous three games, including a 6-for-10 showing in the win over the Magic.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (12-24): Thursday's win came despite 19 turnovers, including 15 by the starters, and Orlando knows it needs to clean up its act in order to sustain any sort of success. "We've just got to admit the problem and try to fix it," Payton told reporters when asked about the giveaways. Evan Fournier, who missed eight games due to an ankle injury, scored 17 points and added five assists in the win over Detroit after producing 14 points against Miami in his return from the ailment.

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. Magic PF Marreese Speights is averaging 14 points and 5.5 rebounds over 16 minutes in two games since C Nikola Vucevic was lost to a broken hand.

                          2. Heat SG Dion Waiters (ankle) has missed two straight games and is expected to sit out Saturday's contest.

                          3. Miami has won four of its last five on the road.

                          PREDICTION: Heat 103, Magic 100

The New York Knicks have dropped below .500 and look to halt a four-game losing streak when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday. New York is struggling on the road with a 2-12 record, with the latest setback coming Thursday as it matched a season worst for points allowed in a 119-107 loss to San Antonio.

Journeyman forward Michael Beasley scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting in a solid effort against the Spurs, but his last five games are a reminder of his inconsistencies. Beasley scored 32 points in a win over Boston on Dec. 21 before averaging just 7.3 points over the next three contests prior to standing out against San Antonio. The Pelicans saw their three-game winning streak come to an end when they experienced defensive issues and dropped a 128-120 home decision to Dallas on Friday. The Mavericks set a franchise record with 22 3-pointers against a shaky New Orleans squad that allowed a stunning 77 first-half points.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (17-18): Kristaps Porzingis scored 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting against the Spurs and said he was "super mad" about the amount of times defenders hit his elbows without fouls being called. "The attention I'm getting now, I won't really get open, open looks much," Porzingis told reporters. "I have to if I'm on the block and the double-team doesn't come, I'm going to shoot over guys. It makes me super mad that little touches on the elbow and arms, they affect my shot so much. I'm confused. I'm thinking I have to change my game." Porzingis averaged 24.7 points over the previous three games and 24.3 on the season.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (18-17): Coach Alvin Gentry was highly miffed over the poor performance of his club when playing at home against one of the worst teams in the NBA. "We didn't start with the same energy we normally start with," Gentry told reporters. "We weren't as connected defensively as I thought we should have been, and so obviously, they got off to a great start shooting the basketball. That's just way too many obstacles to overcome." Frontcourt stars Anthony Davis (33 points) and DeMarcus Cousins (32, 20 rebounds) had big performances against the Mavericks, but the bench was outscored 60-10.

                              BUZZER BEATERS

                              1. Davis averaged 31.5 points and 18 rebounds as the Pelicans won both of last season's meetings.

                              2. New Orleans PG Rajon Rondo recorded eight assists against Dallas after establishing a franchise record and career high with 25 two nights earlier against Brooklyn.

                              3. New York PG Frank Ntilikina recorded a season-high 11 assists against the Spurs.

                              PREDICTION: Pelicans 114, Knicks 105
