    Preview: Spurs at Trail Blazers
    Gracenote
    Jan 7, 2018

LaMarcus Aldridge finally got himself some well-deserved rest and Kawhi Leonard continued to increase his minutes when the San Antonio Spurs knocked off the Phoenix Suns in a brief stop at home on Friday, but another road trip looms. The Spurs will kick off a three-game west coast trip by visiting the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday.

San Antonio began a stretch with nine of 11 on the road by dropping two of three last week and will continue to try to balance rest and winning while staring at another back-to-back at Portland on Sunday and Sacramento on Monday. Leonard is likely to take one of the two games off but Aldridge, who played 38 of the first 40 games, could be around for both after resting at home on Friday and watching his teammates breeze past the Phoenix Suns 103-89. The Trail Blazers had their own struggles on a recent road trip but returned home on Friday and locked down on the defensive end in a 110-89 triumph over the Atlanta Hawks. “I just thought we tightened up," Portland point guard Damian Lillard told reporters. "To start the third quarter, we came out right. We got our hands on balls, we contested shots, we continued to get to spots and share the ball offensively and we was able to sustain that."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS Southwest (San Antonio), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE SPURS (27-13): With Aldridge out on Friday, ageless wonder Manu Ginobili was ready to step up and became the second NBA player 40 years or older to score 20 or more points off the bench, joining Sacramento's Vince Carter. Ginobili, who sat out the second night of a back-to-back at Philadelphia on Wednesday, went for 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting in 19 minutes on Friday and buried three 3-pointers during a key sequence to close out the third quarter. "I felt those shots were going in, not a feeling that I've been having that often lately," Ginobili told reporters. "So, when it does come, it feels great. At the same time, you feel like you are helping the team because we were kind of struggling. The game was close. We were right there. I helped us get a little lead, and that makes it even better."

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (20-18): Lillard is still working his way back into shape after sitting out five straight games with a hamstring injury and was only needed for 29 minutes in Friday's win. The Weber State product is 8-of-15 from 3-point range in his two games back but committed 11 turnovers in those contests, including seven in a loss at Cleveland on Tuesday. Shooting guard CJ McCollum led Portland with 20 points in Friday's win and is averaging 24.6 points over the last five contests.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Spurs SG Danny Green (groin) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

    2. Trail Blazers swingman Evan Turner is 21-of-33 from the field over the last three games.

    3. San Antonio earned a 93-91 win at Portland on Dec. 20 behind 22 points from Aldridge.

PREDICTION: Spurs 106, Trail Blazers 101

        Preview: Hawks at Lakers
        Gracenote
        Jan 7, 2018

The worst teams in their respective conferences square off when the Los Angeles Lakers host the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. Only the Hawks (10) own fewer wins than the Lakers (11), who dropped their last three games by an average of 23 points to run their latest slide to nine straight.

Los Angeles slipped to 29th in the league in scoring defense at an average of 111.7 points and surrendered 93 points through the first three quarters in Friday's 108-94 home loss to the Charlotte Hornets. "Early in the year if we had off shooting nights we were still in ballgames because we were defending our tails off," Lakers coach Luke Walton told reporters. "The defense, we are going to get back to. As much as we are trying to get lineups together and get guys experience and find groups that are working, we are going to get back to being a good defensive team no matter what it takes." The Hawks have not won a road game since Dec. 2 at Brooklyn and dropped the first two legs of the five-game trip at Phoenix and Portland. Atlanta struggles on the defensive end as well and allowed the Trail Blazers to shoot 53.8 percent from the floor in Friday's 110-89 setback.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (10-28): The offense struggled just as much as the defense in Friday's loss, with Dennis Schroder leading just two players in double figures at 14 points as the team shot 36.1 percent from the floor. Schroder leads the team in scoring at an average of 19.6 points but is shooting 41.2 percent on the road while filling it up at 48 percent at home. Schroder is shooting just 31.9 percent from the field in his last four road games and is just 3-of-17 from 3-point range in those four contests.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (11-27): Los Angeles rookie point guard Lonzo Ball (shoulder) returned from a six-game absence on Friday and is taking ownership of his teams struggles. "I just need to get back to playing hard," Ball told reporters after scoring 11 points in 27 minutes. "Not really playing that hard right now. We're playing like garbage. It's something I need to address and fix." Small forward Brandon Ingram provided some of the few highlights on Friday while recording his fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. The Lakers waived veteran C Andrew Bogut.

        2. Hawks rookie PF John Collins is shooting 57.8 percent from the field but is 4-of-19 over his last three games.

        3. Los Angeles took both meetings last season after dropping three straight in the series.

        PREDICTION: Hawks 116, Lakers 109

                    Preview: Devils at Islanders

                    Jan 6, 2018

The New Jersey Devils are mired in a losing streak that has knocked them out of first place in the Metropolitan Division, but their struggles pale in comparison to the skidding New York Islanders. One of the two clubs will end a slide when the Devils make the short trip to visit the reeling Islanders in a Sunday matinee.

New Jersey had won five in a row but followed that up by dropping four straight games (0-2-2) to match its longest losing streak of the season entering the final stop of a four-game road trip before its off week. "We have to get two points in that game (Sunday)," Devils forward Taylor Hall told reporters. "We don’t want to go into a break with five straight Ls. We know our conference, our division, can slip away pretty quick.” The Islanders know that feeling, getting outscored 25-8 during the five-game tailspin that has them spiraling down the standings. "I've been concerned for a few weeks," New York coach Doug Weight told reporters. "It's a concerning time. We looked tired at times. ... We have to recharge and get revamped."

TV: 1 p.m. ET, MSG (New Jersey), MSG Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (22-11-7): Taylor Hall has scored five times and collected 11 points over the past nine games to boost his team-high totals to 14 goals and 26 assists. Brian Boyle, who did not make his season debut until Nov. 1 after he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in September, continues to flourish by scoring his 11th goal in 30 games at Dallas on Thursday. Cory Schneider is 3-5-1 despite a 1.88 goals-against average versus the Islanders.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (20-18-4): New York also enters its off week after Sunday's game and it couldn't come at a more opportune time after co-leading scorer Josh Bailey was injured in Friday's 4-0 loss at Pittsburgh. Weight does not expect Bailey to be available Sunday and was unsure of the status of Andrew Ladd and defenseman Ryan Pulock. “I just have been holding my face for 15 minutes,” Weight said. “So I don’t know how long people are going to be out.”

                    OVERTIME

                    1. Special teams are killing New York, which went 13-for-20 on the penalty kill and 1-for-16 on the power play during the five-game skid

                    2. The Devils have lost three in a row overall in the series and their last seven visits to New York.

                    3. Islanders G Jaroslav Halak has lost four in a row overall, but allowed three goals in winning both starts versus the Devils last season.

                    PREDICTION: Devils 4, Islanders 3

                        Preview: Sabres at Flyers
                        Gracenote
                        Jan 6, 2018

The Philadelphia Flyers have some work to do if they are to climb into playoff position in the crowded Eastern Conference, but will try to keep their encouraging play of late going when they host the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. Philadelphia defeated St. Louis 6-3 on Saturday for its second straight victory and third in four games, but is tied for last in the Metropolitan Division with the New York Islanders.

"We have a couple good games and then we slack off with how we play," Flyers captain Claude Giroux told reporters after recording a goal and two assists Saturday, giving him a team-high 51 points. "So we've got to keep going." Buffalo, meanwhile, is last in the Atlantic Division after a 4-3 loss at Winnipeg on Friday. The Sabres are riding a three-game losing streak and have the second-fewest points in the NHL to Arizona. "It seems like it's a lot of the same questions with a lot of the same answers," Buffalo coach Phil Housley told reporters after the Sabres gave up a pair of power-play goals Friday and are only 7-for-12 on the penalty kill in their last four games.

TV: 1 p.m. ET, Sportsnet; MSG Buffalo, NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE SABRES (10-22-9): Evander Kane shares the team lead in points (35) with Jack Eichel, but has only a goal and an assist in his last six games. Eichel hasn't recorded a point in three contests after a torrid stretch that saw him pile up seven goals and four assists in six games to end December. Jason Pominville (eight goals, 19 points) has three assists in his last two contests after not recording a point in his previous 10 contests.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (18-15-8): Sean Couturier scored twice Saturday, reaching the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career and prompting him to tell reporters: "It's a great accomplishment in this league, but you know I'll take the win any day that I can instead of the goals." Wayne Simmonds scored Saturday for the third time in four games, giving him 14 on the season along with Giroux and tied for second to Couturier's 21. Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has recorded at least a point in eight of his last 10 contests with four goals and five assists during that span.

                        OVERTIME

                        1. Philadelphia RW Jakub Voracek leads the NHL with 41 assists after recording one Saturday, giving him five in the last four games.

                        2. Buffalo is 0-for-8 on the power play in its last two games and has the second-worst percentage in the NHL at 11.9 percent after leading the league at 24.5 percent last season.

                        3. The teams split the last 10 meetings including the first two of three encounters this season - each winning at home - with Buffalo's Ryan O'Reilly scoring in both games and Voracek recording three assists.

                            Gracenote
                            Jan 6, 2018

The Chicago Blackhawks appeared as though they were making a run toward the top of the Central Division in the middle of December with five straight victories, but nothing has come easy since. The Blackhawks have won only two of the last seven contests and their No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford is out indefinitely with an injury as they prepare to host the desperate Edmonton Oilers on Sunday afternoon.

Chicago had points in three consecutive games (2-0-1) before coughing up a lead in the third period of a 5-4 setback against red-hot Vegas at home Friday. “It wasn’t a great night for our (defense),” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville told reporters after the loss. “That was probably as tough a period with how we played with our gap. We gave them the puck and possession on almost every entry, not denying them what we wanted to do.” The Oilers followed up an inspiring 2-1 shootout victory over Anaheim on Thursday by allowing three goals in the first period Saturday en route to a 5-1 loss at Dallas to open a five-game road trip. Edmonton captain Connor McDavid notched an assist Saturday for his team-leading 47th point, but the 20-year-old is suffering through a six-game goal drought in which he has totaled 20 shots.

TV: 3 p.m. ET, NHL Network, TVA, Sportsnet West (Edmonton), WGN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE OILERS (18-21-3): Leon Draisaitl snapped a three-game point drought with his 11th goal of the season Saturday on the power play, but joined Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with a team-worst, minus-3 rating in the contest. Power forward Patrick Maroon (nine goals, 21 points) will be eligible after serving a two-game suspension for an illegal hit. Recently acquired goaltender Al Montoya made his Oilers debut by stopping 13-of-14 shots in relief of starter Cam Talbot, who has surrendered at least four goals in five of his last six contests.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (19-15-6): Captain Jonathan Toews has notched a goal and an assist in each of the last three games and is second on the team with 28 points. Patrick Kane leads the way with 40 points and has registered seven goals and six assists in his last 11 games while linemate Nick Schmaltz has scored three times and set up four others in the past five contests. Forward Ryan Hartman, who had been skating with Schmaltz and Kane, was scratched Friday because of an upper-body injury and is day-to-day.

                            OVERTIME

                            1. Kane scored the winner as the Blackhawks defeated the host Oilers 4-3 in overtime on Dec. 29 after Edmonton won 2-1 in OT on Oct. 19 in Chicago.

                            2. Blackhawks G Jeff Glass, a 32-year-old rookie, is 2-1-1 with a .908 save percentage while making four straight starts.

                            3. Edmonton F Ryan Strome played his 300th NHL game Saturday, but has gone five games without recording a point.

                            PREDICTION: Blackhawks 5, Oilers 4

The Winnipeg Jets have played well throughout the first 42 games of the NHL season, and look to continue their home dominance when they host the San Jose Sharks on Sunday. The Jets won for the fourth time in five games overall and improved to 15-3-1 on home ice - including a loss on opening night - with a 4-3 victory Friday over Buffalo as center Blake Wheeler finished with a goal and an assist.

“Special teams was the difference for sure in the game tonight,” Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice told reporters after the Jets killed off all five Buffalo power plays Friday, the 10th consecutive home game they have not allowed a power-play goal (30 opportunities). The Sharks could not hold a 5-2 lead after two periods Friday at Ottawa, surrendering three goals in the third period before falling 6-5 in overtime. “There are no easy points on the road,” Sharks coach Peter DeBoer told the media after San Jose dropped to 1-1-2 on a road trip that ends Sunday. “We’ll take the point and move on.
