The Washington Capitals host St. Louis on Sunday and hope a stretch of one game in seven days doesn't leave them too rusty to fend off the Blues. Washington, which leads the Metropolitan Division by two points over New Jersey, won at Carolina 5-4 in overtime Tuesday for its third straight victory and seventh in the last 10 games.

Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen (team-high plus-15, 22:29 average ice time) will play Sunday after missing Tuesday's game because of an upper-body injury, telling reporters: “I only had to miss one game. I could’ve easily missed five probably in a different part of the schedule.” Washington's Alex Ovechkin, who was named captain of the Metropolitan Division on Saturday for the All-Star Game on Jan. 28, has 13 goals and 25 points in 15 games versus St. Louis. The Blues lost 6-3 at Philadelphia on Saturday, falling to 20-2-0 this season when scoring three or more goals. "Today wasn't good enough," Blues coach Mike Yeo told reporters. "That wasn't our level, so we have to make sure we understand that, see that, and get back."

The Columbus Blue Jackets have stumbled during a road-heavy stretch of their schedule but hope to get back on track when they make a brief stop at home to face the Florida Panthers on Sunday. Columbus is 3-5-2 over its last 10 as it resumes a 13-game stretch in which it plays only four times at Nationwide Arena.

The Blue Jackets are missing three of their top forwards because of injury and it is taking a toll after they were shut out for the second time in three games Thursday at Colorado. “It is what it is. We have so many guys out," coach John Tortorella told reporters, referring to the extended absences of Cam Atkinson, Alexander Wennberg and Brandon Dubinsky. The Panthers were going in the right direction following a perfect homestand that ran their winning streak to five, but have lost the first two games on their road trip sandwiched around a snow postponement in Boston. "Right now, we have to think positive," center Aleksander Barkov told reporters after Florida poured 40 shots on goal in a 4-2 loss at Detroit. "We had a lot of chances. We played the right way. We just need to continue to do that and good things will happen."

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (17-18-5): Barkov was a force against Detroit, ending a seven-game drought with his 12th goal and notching a career-best 10 shots on net. Defenseman Mike Matheson also is heating up after failing to find the net in the first 28 games of the season, collecting his fourth goal in the past 11 games - a highlight-reel tally that just beat the second-period buzzer in Detroit.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (23-16-3): Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice in a 7-3 victory at Florida on Nov. 2, but is among many players slumping badly with three goals in the past 27 games. Preview: Canucks at Canadiens

After ending their five-game slide last time out, the Montreal Canadiens hope to begin a winning streak when they continue their five-game homestand Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks. Montreal ended December - and its 2-5-0 road trip - with four straight losses and dropped the opener of its string at Bell Centre before edging league-leading Tampa Bay 2-1 in a shootout on Thursday.

Despite the victory, the Canadiens have produced fewer than two goals in each of their last six contests and have three forwards with plus/minus ratings of minus-13 or worse. Captain Max Pacioretty may be heating up, however, as he has recorded a goal and an assist over his last two games to pull even with Alex Galchenyuk for the team lead with 22 points. Vancouver began its seven-game road trip Saturday with its third straight loss, a 3-2 defeat at Toronto in a shootout. Rookie Brock Boeser scored his team-leading 22nd goal as the Canucks squandered a 2-0 lead in the third period and fell to 0-2-2 on the road since winning at Nashville on Nov 30.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (16-19-6): Chris Tanev left after being hit in the mouth by a shot less than four minutes into Saturday's contest and did not return. The 28-year-old defenseman was playing in just his second game since missing time with a groin injury and also has been sidelined by a thumb ailment this season. Vancouver is looking to avenge a 7-5 home loss on Dec. 19 in which Thomas Vanek registered his 10th career hat trick and added an assist.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (17-20-4): Victor Mete is expected to rejoin the club on Friday after being given time off following Team Canada's run to the gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship. The 19-year-old rookie defenseman appeared in 27 games for Montreal before representing his country in the tournament, recording four assists and a plus-5 rating. The Detroit Red Wings are creeping closer to playoff contention with a season-high four straight victories and hope to continue their run on Sunday, when they host the NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning. Detroit has allowed just six goals during its winning streak after Friday’s 4-2 victory over Florida but won’t have Jimmy Howard in net for the Atlantic Division battle due to a lower-body injury.

“The one thing this team has showed so far sitting where we sit today is, they have showed a good, resilient attitude,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill told the Detroit Free Press. “That’s our leadership. … They’ve done a good job of keeping it calm and continuing to work on the process.” Petr Mrazek will be in the crease for the Red Wings as they attempt to end a nine-game losing streak - including playoffs - against Tampa Bay, which won a pair of 3-2 decisions in October. The Lightning have lost consecutive games for just the second time this season after dropping a shootout decision at Montreal on Thursday and struggling in their own end two nights later to fall 6-3 at Ottawa. “There’s a group of guys that are going to have to circle the wagons in there, the leaders, and figure this one out, because we’re going down a road,” Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper told reporters. “This is the part of the season now where you can’t let things slide.”

Preview: Bruins at Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins hope to build off a complete effort last time out and continue to climb back into a playoff position when they open a three-game homestand Sunday against the surging Boston Bruins. Captain Sidney Crosby registered his first four-point performance of the season as the Penguins rolled to a 4-0 road victory against the New York Islanders on Friday for their second convincing win in three games.

“We played fast, we generated a lot of shots (38), a lot of opportunities, so that’s more of the way we need to play,” Crosby told reporters. “Especially coming off of (a 4-0 home loss to Carolina on Thursday). We had a quick turnaround. That one was fresh in our mind, and I thought we responded well.” Pittsburgh is 12-7-1 at home in 2017-18 and posted a pair of wins at PPG Paints Arena last season against Boston, which extended its point streak to 10 games (8-0-2) with a 7-1 triumph over Carolina on Saturday. Patrice Bergeron tied the single-game club record and became the first Bruin to score four goals in a game since 1999 while moving over the 700-point mark (702) in his career. Tuukka Rask, who is 11-0-1 in his last 12 starts and has allowed a total of four goals in his last five games, is expected to be in net after being rested against the Hurricanes.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (23-10-6): Boston had plenty of players who padded their statistics in the win over Carolina, as Bergeron moved to third on the team with 31 points after recording five. Brad Marchand registered four assists Saturday while David Pastrnak scored a goal and set up two others as the duo enter Sunday sharing the club lead with 38 points apiece. Rookie Danton Heinen also notched an assist, giving him seven points in his last five games, while David Backes has registered 12 in his last nine contests.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (21-19-3): Crosby recorded just three points in his previous eight games before scoring one goal and setting up three others against the Islanders while new linemate Daniel Sprong collected two tallies and an assist. Phil Kessel has notched four of his team-leading 45 points in the last four games and Evgeni Malkin has registered two goals and two assists in the same span to push his point total to 39 - one behind Crosby. Defenseman Brian Dumoulin (concussion) has missed the last two games and is questionable for Sunday.

OVERTIME

The Western Conference-leading Vegas Golden Knights hope to continue their home dominance when they host the New York Rangers on Sunday. Vegas, which is coming off a 5-4 triumph at Chicago on Friday, owns the NHL's best home record (17-2-1) and is riding a nine-game point streak (8-0-1) - including six straight wins - at T-Mobile Arena.

The expansion Golden Knights, who haven't fallen in 60 minutes at home since Nov. 28 against Dallas, suffered their first overall regulation loss since Dec. 1 on Thursday at St. Louis (2-1) but bounced back versus the Blackhawks as Reilly Smith capped a third-period comeback - and a three-point performance - with 6:07 remaining. William Karlsson also tallied in the win, giving him a team-leading 21 goals in 40 games after recording 18 in 183 contests over his first three NHL seasons. New York has played well on the road of late, going 3-0-2 in its last five after recording a 2-1 shootout win at Arizona on Saturday despite being without leading scorer Mats Zuccarello (31 points) due to illness. The Rangers are 6-2-2 in their last 10 overall thanks in part to Mika Zibanejad, who scored the lone goal in the bonus format.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (22-14-5): Henrik Lundqvist made 38 saves before stopping all three attempts he faced in the shootout to record his 424th career victory. The 35-year-old Swede passed Tony Esposito for eighth place on the all-time list, needing 111 fewer games to register 423 wins. Each of New York's last five road contests have gone beyond regulation, with the team going 2-0 in overtime decisions and 1-2 in shootouts.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (28-10-2): Luca Sbisa, who hadn't played since Dec. 12 due to a lower-body injury, returned to the lineup Friday but exited after two periods and could miss the game against New York. Forward Ryan Carpenter made his debut for Vegas after being claimed off waivers from San Jose on Dec. 13, registering two shots and a minus-1 rating in 12 minutes, 33 seconds of ice time. The 26-year-old center notched one assist in 16 games with the Sharks this season, giving him five points (two goals) in 28 career contests prior to Friday.
