6-Unit Play. Take 'Under' 206.5 Memphis at Denver (8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 12)
We have had our eyes on this game for a while as Memphis and Denver have had a history of playing under the posted total. Denver has struggled from the floor as of late and the Grizzlies have a tendency to fall short of the total when playing against winning teams. Memphis is 0-4 vs the total in their last four games versus teams with a winning straight up record. Even better for 'under' backers in Memphis games is the fact that they gave up over 100 points in their most recent game. When that happens the 'under' is 12-2 the following contest. Memphis has hit the century mark often lately, but this posted total shows that the 'under' is the sharp play here. Expect low scoring in this one and don't be surprised if both teams fail to hit 100 points.
Should the worst team in the NBA be laying points, especially this many, to any opponent? My answer is no. Brooklyn is four games better than Atlanta in the standings. It's not a fluke. The Nets are the better team.
The spot is ripe, too, for the Nets to defeat the Hawks. Atlanta is returning home following a five-game, nine day road swing fat and happy afte‚r upsetting the Nuggets in Denver two nights ago. Focus could be a real problem for the youthful, rebuiilding Hawks especially knowing nine of their next 10 games will be played at Philips Arena their home base.
By contrast, the Nets should be extremely fired-up after being embarrassed at home by the Pistons, 114-80, Wednesday night. That was the Nets' worst home loss of the season. Brooklyn had been below-the-radar prior to that loss having lost by only one point in overtime to the Raptors in their previous game and coming within five points or fewer during their past five games before that.
The Nets have the second-best ATS mark in the league at 25-16, including covering six in a row until the Detroit debacle. The Nets have covered 73 percent of their last 15 away games, too. Brooklyn still aspires to be a playoff team, at this point, being six games out of the final playoff spot in the East. The Hawks have no such aspirations.
3 Unit Play. Take #9 Under 5.5 -115 Edmonton at Arizona (9:05p.m., Friday January 12)
Still blows me away how bad the Edmonton Oilers have struggled so far this season and in their last 3 games they have a total of 3 goals with 3 losses. The Oilers have dropped 7 out 8 and lets throw in that the Oilers have cashed 5 out 6 UNDER games. The Arizona Coyotes have cashed back-to-back UNDER games and tonight I see this game staying under the total. The Oilers are 1-5 O/U against Western Conference opponents and the Coyotes are 3-9 O/U against a team with a losing record.
