My free pick of the day is the game between (929) OAK Athletics and (930) KC Royals. Take "Under". If you're a fan of offense....don't watch this game. These are the worst two offenses in the American League. Oakland has given up on the season a long time ago, going with kids everywhere. This anemic offense is last in runs scored and has scored 6 runs or more in only one of the last 16 games. The A's are 39-27 under the total on the road and this is their 11th road game over the last 15 games. They also run into a hot pitcher. KC righty Zack Greinke has a solid 3.72 ERA for the season and just 0.51 his last three starts. Incredibly, he's winless in those three starts, as this offense is terrible. The team is 5-2 under the total his last 7 starts and 39-29 under the total at home. Outside of a 13-3 win over the Tigers, this offense has been dormant the last three weeks, on a 7-2 under the total run. Looks like another low scoring baseball contest, play the A's/Royals under the total.

N.Y. Yankees +120 at TAMPA BAY

The Yankees are desparate. They are in must-win mode and they get the opportunity to face the Rays and make up some serious ground right now. So many veterans on the field tonight for New York that we have to give them a shot to win this one behind Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.41 ERA) who has looked as good as any pitcher this season.

New York trails the Rays by 12 games and trails Boston in the wildcard race by 6 1/2 games. The Yankees have won four straight on the road and the offense has scored 35 runs in those four games. They are also 18-6 in Mussina's last 24 starts overall, including each of his last six and eight of his last nine on the road.

Thursday, Mussina gave up two runs on five hits but got a no-decision in a 3-2 win over Boston. He is 18-7 with a 3.38 ERA in 31 career starts against the Rays and 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA against Tampa this season.

New York has won seven of the last 10 meetings with the Rays and they are 8-2 in Mussina's last 10 starts against them. It's a team with a lot of veterans that is in must-win mode. Play the Yankees tonight.

                NATIONAL LEAGUE

                N.Y. Mets (77-61) at Milwaukee (80-57)

Highly touted Mets prospect Jonathon Niese is set to make his major-league debut at Miller Park against the Brewers, who will counter with Manny Parra (10-6, 4.00 ERA) in the middle game of this series between playoff contenders.

New York rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 on Monday, improving to 35-17 in its last 52 games and move two games clear of Philadelphia in the N.L. East race. Additionally, the Mets are on runs of 12-5 against southpaw starters, 4-1 on the road and 4-1 on Tuesdays.

Despite Monday’s defeat, the Brewers are still on positive streaks of 20-8 overall, 9-2 at home, 4-0 after a loss, 23-8 against lefty starters overall, 42-16 against lefties at home and 35-16 on Tuesdays.

The Mets hold a slim 3-2 edge in the season series with the Brewers, but they’ve won 10 of their last 14 games at Miller Park.

Parra was sensational on Wednesday at St. Louis, giving up a run on six hits in six innings, walking none and striking out seven. However, his bullpen imploded in the eighth inning, as Milwaukee lost 5-3. The Brewers are just 3-7 in Parra’s last 10 starts, but 2-0 in the last two at home, where the southpaw is 6-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 14 efforts this year.

Parra’s lone career start against the Mets came on April 11 in New York, and he lasted just four innings, giving up three runs in a 4-2 defeat.

Niese, who started the season in Double-A, went 5-1 with a 3.65 ERA in six games at Triple-A New Orleans. While there, the 21-year-old former seventh-round pick walked 12 and struck out 31 in 37 innings.

For the Brewers, the under is on streaks of 4-1-1 at home, 10-4-2 on Tuesdays, 42-17-4 against the N.L. East and 12-5-1 at home against southpaw starters. Also, the under is 5-2-1 in New York’s last eight away from home. However, the over is 40-18-5 in the last 63 series meetings between these two, including 10-2-1 in Milwaukee, though yesterday’s game stayed under the posted price.

                AMERICAN LEAGUE

                N.Y. Yankees (73-64) at Tampa Bay (84-51)

The desperate Yankees head to Tampa Bay in must-win mode as they send Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.41) to the mound against the Rays’ Matt Garza in the opener of a three-game set at Tropicana Field.

Despite a 13-9 victory at Detroit in a make-up game Monday, New York still trails the first-place Rays by 12 games in the A.L. East and wild-card-leading Boston by 6½ games. Although the Yankees have lost four of their last seven overall and eight of their last 11 on artificial turf, they’ve won four straight on the road, scoring 35 runs in the four contests. They’re also 18-6 in Mussina’s last 24 starts overall (6-0 in the last six) and 8-1 in his last nine outings on the highway (3-0 last three).

Tampa Bay, which was idle on Monday, enters this series on a five-game winning streak. The Rays are on impressive streaks of 48-12 at home, 55-25 against right-handed starters, 36-17 against winning teams, 5-0 versus A.L. East rivals and 4-0 when Garza faces divisional foes.

During the Yankees’ 6-0 run with Mussina on the hill, the veteran right-hander has pitched six or seven innings in each outing. On Thursday against the Red Sox at home, Mussina yielded just two runs on five hits, but got a no-decision in his team’s walk-off, 3-2 victory in 10 innings. Mussina is 6-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 10 road starts this year and 18-7 with a 3.38 ERA in 31 career starts against the Rays, including 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA in two outings versus Tampa this season.

Garza was tremendous in Wednesday’s 1-0 home win over the Blue Jays, scattering six hits and three walks in 7 2/3 scoreless innings. That marked the fourth time in his last eight starts that Garza has pitched at least 7 2/3 scoreless innings, and he won all four. At home this year, the right-hander is 7-2 with a 2.47 ERA, including a 7-1 victory over the Yankees on May 12, when Garza gave up five hits in seven shutout frames.

New York has won seven of the last 10 meetings with the Rays, and the Yanks are 8-2 in Mussina’s past 10 starts against Tampa Bay (2-0 this year).

The under is 10-1 in the last 11 series clashes, including 5-0 in the last five meetings at the Trop. The under is also on streaks of 9-3 when Garza pitches at home, 8-2 when Garza pitches against the A.L. East and 14-6 when Mussina toils on an artificial surface.
