NCAAB Game of the Day: Purdue at Michigan State betting preview and odds
No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers at No. 4 Michigan State Spartans (-3, 148)
No. 3 Purdue attempts to bounce back from its first loss since late November when it travels to take on No. 4 Michigan State in a Big Ten contest Saturday. The Boilermakers suffered their first league setback Wednesday against Ohio State, dropping them into a first-place tie with the Buckeyes, while the Spartans sit a game behind after winning their seventh straight at Iowa on Tuesday.
The two teams are almost mirror images of each other, with Michigan State scoring 83.7 points a game and giving up 65.3, while Purdue scores 83.2 and gives up 64.2. Guard Carsen Edwards leads the Boilermakers in scoring with 17 points per game, while Vincent Edwards (15.3 points, 7.8 rebounds) and Isaac Haas (14.7, 5.3) help power the Purdue inside game. Haas, a 7-2 senior, will be facing a front line that can match his size in the Spartans' 6-11 freshman Jaren Jackson Jr. (11.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 blocks) and 6-8 sophomore Nick Ward (13.3, 7.5). But the key to the Spartans' success will be leading scorer Miles Bridges (17.7 points, 7.3 rebounds), who has been on a tear of late, averaging 19 points on 50 percent shooting over the last 10 contests.
TV: 4 p.m. ET, ESPN
LINE HISTORY: The Spartans opened this Big Ten matchup as 3-point home chalk and that line has yet to move as of Saturday morning. The total hit the betting board at 148 and remains at the opening number.
ABOUT PURDUE (23-3 SU, 14-11 ATS, 11-14 O/U): The Boilermakers were due for a loss -- and not just because they had won a school-record 19 straight -- as Matt Painter's squad had been struggling lately despite still getting victories. Purdue's last four victories were by an average of four points, as they were getting outshot by opponents and outrebounded by four boards per contest. A lot of coaches like a late-season loss to help their team focus, and facing a hot Michigan State squad right after the Ohio State setback will give Painter an easy way to get his team fired up and playing better.
ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (23-3 SU, 13-12-1 ATS, 15-10 O/U): With Haas anchoring the Purdue attack, the Spartan big men have to stop a recent trend of getting into foul trouble early. Coach Tom Izzo has enforced that when a player gets two fouls in the first half, they sit until halftime, no matter how good they're playing, so against Iowa, Ward and Jackson Jr. combined for just 14 first-half minutes because of fouls despite combining to shoot 7-of-7 from the field for 16 points. The Spartans have seen Jackson especially struggle with fouls because of his aggressive defensive play -- which brings lots of blocks but also brings the fouls -- and the freshman is going to have to show more control early in games over the next few weeks if Michigan State is going to keep winning.
