The top-seeded Spartans have won 12 straight heading into the tournament while the ninth-seeded Badgers are coming off a 59-54 second-round victory over Maryland on Thursday.

Michigan State leads the Big Ten in scoring, thanks to five starters averaging in double figures, led by sophomore forwards Miles Bridges (16.8 points) and Nick Ward (13 points, 7.5 rebounds). Bridges struggled in the Spartans' win over Wisconsin on Sunday, scoring 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting, but guard Cassius Winston (12.5 points, 6.9 assists) came up big with 20 points, including 6-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. Michigan State F Jaren Jackson Jr. ranks No. 4 in the country with 3.29 blocks per game, helping him win both the conference's Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, joining only Ohio State's Greg Oden in accomplishing that feat.

The Badgers rely mainly on forward Ethan Happ (17.8 points, 8.2 rebounds) but guards Brad Davison (12.1 points, 58 3-pointers) and Brevin Pritzl (9.1, 52) will be key against the bigger Spartans. Wisconsin coach Greg Gard's squad must also come up big defensively like they did on Sunday, holding the Spartans to 68 points - the fourth time in seven games Michigan State has been held under 70 points. The Badgers are normally able to get shooters open when defenses bring a double team against Happ in the post, but Michigan State's front line often plays him one-on-one and Wisconsin's best perimeter threats can't get as many open looks.

Michigan Wolverines vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers (OFF)

Fourth-seeded Nebraska will take on fifth seed Michigan in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday at New York's Madison Square Garden. The Cornhuskers won eight of their last nine regular-season games to give themselves a shot of reaching their first NCAA Tournament since 2013-14 and hope to strengthen their resume by knocking off Michigan for the second time following an impressive 72-52 victory on Jan. 18.

The Wolverines began defense of their Big Ten Tournament title with a 77-71 overtime win against 12th-seeded Iowa on Thursday. Michigan, who has won at least one conference tournament game in 12 straight seasons, has racked up six consecutive victories overall and hopes to improve its NCAA Tournament seeding by avenging its most lopsided loss of the season against Nebraska.

Nebraska's James Palmer Jr. was selected to the All-Big Ten First Team by the coaches after averaging 18.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game in conference play. Palmer was the first Husker player to be named to the all-conference first team since Terran Petteway in 2014 and needs 20 points to move into 10th place on the program's all-time scoring list.

Penn State entered this event on a three-game skid, struggling mightily without sophomore forward Mike Watkins (12.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.3 blocks), who played a total of 14 minutes over that span and missed most of the last two regular-season games with a right knee injury. All-Big Ten performer Tony Carr (Big Ten-best 19.9 points during the regular season), who totaled 58 points on 19-of-29 shooting in the two wins versus the Buckeyes, is averaging 26 points in the two full games without Watkins - who has been ruled out for the rest of the week - after scoring 25 points and knocking down a career-high six triples Thursday.

Keita Bates-Diop (19.2 points, 8.9 rebounds) became the school's seventh Big Ten Player of the Year winner Monday, three days after posting his 12th double-double (24 points, 14 boards, four assists, four blocks and two steals) in 45 minutes against the Hoosiers. Fellow junior C.J. Jackson (12.4 points) buried the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in the second overtime to finish with 13 points and was the only other player besides Bates-Diop to reach double figures in both games versus Penn State. Second-team All-Big Ten squad selection Jae'Sean Tate (12.5 points, 6.2 rebounds) is 16 points and 12 boards shy of moving into sole possession of 20th and ninth place on the program's all-time scoring and rebounding lists, respectively.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Purdue Boilermakers (OFF)

If the recent play of its backcourt is any indication, No. 8 Purdue may be on the verge of another long winning streak. Riding explosive scoring performances from Carsen Edwards and Dakota Mathias over the last three games, the third-seeded Boilermakers hope to change their relative lack of success recently in the Big Ten tournament beginning on Friday when they meet 14th-seeded Rutgers in the quarterfinals at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Purdue's three-game skid from Feb. 7-15 followed its 19-game winning streak - including a 12-0 start in league play - and gave Michigan State the opening it needed to win the regular-season crown, but the Boilermakers rebounded with wins in their final three games to finish in a tie for second place. Perhaps just as importantly as entering New York with Edwards and Mathias in a groove, second-team All-Big Ten forward Vincent Edwards (14.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists) returned to the lineup Sunday after missing the previous two games with an ankle injury, contributing 10 points in 25 minutes.

Serving as the unofficial host of this year's Big Ten tournament seems to be agreeing with the Scarlet Knights, who are one victory in New York away from matching their win total during conference play (3-15). Rutgers bounced Minnesota from the tournament in first-round action Wednesday before shooting 68 percent in the second half en route to a 76-69 upset of sixth-seeded Indiana on Thursday. Corey Sanders (15.0 points) was often the only player the Scarlet Knights could count on offensively throughout the regular season, but the Florida native has taken it to another level this week, averaging 25.5 points on 21-of-40 from the field at MSG.
