She has been running admirably and the speed figures are among the top in this group. Martinez has recent ROI figures which make this horse a good bet. PRADA'S BLING - Her 82 average has this mare with among the top Equibase speed figs in this race. Has to be given consideration based on the quite good Equibase Speed Figure posted in the last race. SUGAR HEAVEN - Has a sharp record at the distance and surface, which makes me favor this mare. Earned a quite good speed figure last time out.

BATTLE TAP - Stand by this horse. Coming off the pace, I think he'll be in a fantastic spot to crush them in the stretch. I like that last effort on February 20th at Parx Racing where he finished third. EXPECTATIONS - The Feb 19th race at Laurel was at a class level of (91). Dropping down in class considerably, so he should be in a good spot. This horse didn't run well in the mud in his last race around the track at Laurel. You may want to disregard that effort. TEQUILA HERO - This horse is in good physical condition. Ran third on February 19th. Faced tougher last time around the track at Laurel. Based on Equibase class figures, this is a weaker group, so I will put this horse on my list of top contenders. Another way to judge class is earnings per race entered. This thoroughbred has the uppermost in the bunch. I think he'll be close at the end. Robb gets a break on this animal carrying 7 pounds less than last out. Should make the difference right here.

RUMBLIN KYLE - In this instance, this pony's inability to close ground in the last event is a cause for concern. This gelding garnered a speed fig in his last event which probably isn't good enough today. PHOTOGENIC - Difficult to play any mount to turn things around if there is no value to taking the shot. When examining today's class rating, he will have to notch a much better speed fig than last time around the track to compete in this dirt route. SAN CRISTO - 8/1 odds isn't enough for this thoroughbred when looking at the most recent outings. This horse recorded a speed figure in his last clash which probably isn't good enough in today's event.

College basketball coaches who aren't interested in conference tournaments

The Kentucky Wildcats have won the SEC conference tournament five times – including each of the last three years – since John Calipari became the head coach back in 2009. But the Big Blue’s bench boss would like to see the SEC abolish the end of the season tournament and see the automatic NCAA Tournament bid go to the regular season conference champion.

“You guys know I’m not a big proponent of the league tournament,” Calipari told reporters in June 2016. “If you lose in the first round of our league tournament, you’re out, you’re done. That’s not the case in most of these other leagues. And if you win our conference tournament, it doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t move the needle… Tournaments really don’t matter.”

Calipari made this statement three months after winning the SEC tourney over Texas A&M, but on Selection Sunday the committee awarded the Wildcats a No. 4 seed and the Aggies a No. 3 seed.

CG Technology opened with Kentucky as the favorites to win the SEC tourney at +150 but dropped the team to middle of the pack at +600.

Calipari isn’t the only head coach at one of the biggest programs in the sport who tolerates conferences tournaments. Back in 2009, North Carolina Tar Heels coach Roy Williams described the ACC tourney as a party to make money for the conference.

“I loved it as a fan,” Williams said, “I don’t love it as much as a coach with the attention the other tournament gets and the emphasis we try and put on it.”

UNC has won the ACC regular season championship eight times but the ACC tourney just three times since Williams arrived in 2003. The Tar Heels are listed at +500 to win the ACC league tourney.

Despite what these coaches think about the conference tournaments the automatic bid in the Big Dance goes to the winner of their league tournament. Teams with a decent enough resume and belonging to one of the power conferences will still get an invite and a cushy seeding if they’re bounced from their conference tourney.

With that in mind, we are looking around to see which teams will have their foot on the gas and which ones won’t in their league tournaments.

Virginia Cavaliers (+320)

There’s not too much the Cavaliers can gain by winning the ACC tournament. They’ve already won the regular season league title and have been ranked first or second in the AP Poll for ages. Virginia will get a No. 1 seed in one of the four regions in the NCAA Tournament unless they flame out in specular fashion in the quarterfinals and Kansas, Michigan State, Villanova and Duke win their respective conference tourneys. Even then, the committee might award Virginia a top seed.

Villanova Wildcats (+100)

Jay Wright is in a good position with the NCAA selection committee. The Wildcats have been near the top of the polls all season and have played in each of the last two national championship games. Villanova thumped Gonzaga and it took care of Tennessee in non-conference matchups earlier this season.

And despite trailing Xavier in the Big East standings, the Wildcats two blowout wins over the Musketeers should be enough to land them a top seed in the Tournament even if they fail to win the regular season title and conference tournament.

Auburn Tigers (+360)

The points Calipari made about the SEC tourney are true from his point of view. The preseason polls always place Calipari’s crew high and then the Wildcats have to work at staying up there. That’s not the case for a program like Auburn.

The Tigers haven’t made it to the Tournament since 2003 and the last time they made a big run in the Big Dance, Chuck “The Rifleman” Person leading the charge. Yes, the same Chuck Person who was arrested for bribery and kickbacks involving Auburn recruits and Adidas.

Auburn is projected to nab a No. 3 seed in the Tournament but that could move up if the team wins the SEC championship.

St. Mary’s Gaels (+160)

The Gaels are projected to be an eighth seed in the Tournament but winning the West Coast tournament and beating Gonzaga in the process would propel them into a top four seed in one of the regions.
