My free play for tonight is on the Angels, getting it done in Anaheim against the Cleveland Indians. After losing their season-opener, the Angels have won three in a row, and will be motivated a little extra tonight against the Tribe.

Cleveland has won 11 in a row against the Halos, so the home team will be out for a bit of revenge. The Indians arrive after losing two of three at Seattle.

I'm not going to list pitchers here, as it doesn't matter to me about Mike Clevinger or JC Ramirez.

I'm more intrigued by the Angels' offense that is hitting .282 - fifth-best in the bigs right now. On the flipside to that, the Indians are hitting just .186 after their first three, second-worst in the league.

Take the Halos tonight, as they scalp their 11-game losing streak to Cleveland and roll to the win.

On to my complimentary winner...

My free play is a matinee Interleague game, as I like the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Minnesota Twins. The Bucs have had an odd start to being 3-0, but they are, and now open their home slate with the Twinkies after sweeping another American League Central foe - the Detroit Tigers.

Pittsburgh had its game on Thursday postponed by bad weather, it won its delayed season-opener Friday in 13 innings, 13-10, then it was postponedon Saturday before Sunday's doubleheader sweep - 1-0 and 8-6 - in a day/night twinbill, and then traveled late last night to get home.

We're banking on resiliance and adrenaline for this one, as the Pirates have the league's fourth-best batting average (.284) and 10th most home runs (4) after their first three games. They've also scored the second-most runs - ranking among teams that have played four games - putting 22 on the board to start the season.

Let's roll with the Pirates today, as they get by the Twins before they take a long-awaited nap after the game.

My free play for Monday night is on the Miami Marlins over the Boston Red Sox, and I want you listing Trevor Richards ONLY, as he is making his MLB debut, and that's always a profitable move for me when the situation is right.

Yes, Boston is off to a 3-1 start. But today it faces a guy who was the 2017 Minor League Pitcher of the Year for the Marlins, and now will have the biggest moment of his career.

And without a true MLB scouting report to use, the Red Sox won't be able to compete against Richards, who went 12-11 with a 2.53 ERA last year and brings a healthy arsenal that includes a fastball, changeup and breaking ball. He doesn't have an overpowering heater, but he commands the ball on the corners, and gets late life when needed.

I like Richards' chances of keeping the Red Sox off balance today, and the Marlins at a big underdog price.

Major League Baseball trades places with as zany a March Madness as we have ever witnessed, ushering in America's favorite pastime as the sports flavor of the month in April. Let's open the season with one of our favorite handicapping angles – good month pitchers.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of April. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in April team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s April list.

Good Month Pitchers

Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies: 11-3 (8-1 Away)

Now with Philadelphia and having diminishing velocity and less bite on breaking pitches, Arrieta will attempt to maintain high win percentage despite being on a lesser team.

Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians: 9-4 (6-1 Away)

Cleveland's No. 2 starter reached 200 innings for the first time a season ago. That made us realize just how good his stuff is with mid-90's heater, a big breaking ball, a killer slider and change-up to confound lefty hitters. No reason this excellence does not continue.

Jonny Cueto, San Francisco Giants: 11-4 (6-2 Home)

With a drop in velocity, Cueto uses four pitches, variable deliveries and different arm angles to fool opposing hitters. Not the pitcher he used to be, Cueto has to step up early with Madison Bumgarner on the DL again.

*Dallas Keuchel, Houston Astros: 10-5 (4-2 Away)

The left-hander does not throw particularly hard, but he knows how to pitch and keeps the ball low in the strike zone. Backed by a tremendous young and talented squad coming off a World Series-winning campaign, the victories should keep coming for Keuchel.

Carlos Martinez, St. Louis Cardinals: 10-3 (6-1 Home)

Top line starter in the NL and now being under the guidance of pitching guru Mike Maddux should only make Martinez even more effective. With mid-to-high 90's fastball and opposing batters at a .145 average (in 2017) against his slider, Martinez should be a winner each month this season.

Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox: 10-5 (4-2 Away)

From Cy Young winner to pitching like “Cy Old” a year later, Porcello in truth is somewhere in between. His command was way off a year ago. Having won the best pitcher award in 2016, he was over-throwing the first four months of 2017. Look for Porcello to return to middle of the rotation starter and be effective early.

Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals: 10-5 (5-2 Home)

Known primarily as a fast starter with no finish late in the season, Strasburg might have put that tag behind him as his final eight starts of 2017 featured a minuscule 0.84 ERA. Three nasty pitches for Strasburg, whose has learned to pitch without his best stuff.

*Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox: 10-4 (6-2 Home)

A dominant left-hander who is making the transition to lower pitch counts, Sale still has the 'stuff' to strikeout any batter in any situation. The fact of the matter is Sale is a very uncomfortable at-bat for any hitter.

Jordan Zimmermann, Detroit Tigers: 10-5 (6-2 Home)

Zimmermann's 19-9 season in 2013 is a distant memory at this point and he's just 17-20 with Detroit the past two years. Though just 31, Zimmermann's margin of error has all but disappeared unless he has his best stuff.

Bad Month Pitchers

Philip Hughes, MInnesota Twins: 5-10 (1-5 Home)

Hughes will begin the season the DL with a strained left oblique but is "still in the mix" to pitch April 11, the first time the Twins will need a fifth starter. Has slid in all areas as a pitcher and is at best a fifth starter these days on almost any club.

*Corey Kluber, Cleveland Indians: 4-10 / 2-6 A

It's hard to imagine Kluber is such a slow starter, but that has been his history. Once he finds his groove, the right-hander is light's out, but for whatever reason the first few starts of every season are problematic.

*James Shields, Chicago White Sox: 4-9 (2-5 Away)

Shields starts the season as the White Sox "ace", which tells you about the current state of the Pale Hose starting pitching. At 36, the difference between his fastball and previously lethal changeup is not enough to anymore. Also, the command of the off-speed pitches is not what it used to be for the righty.

Julio Teheran, Atlanta Braves: 5-10 (2-6 Home)

The Braves No. 1 starter was spooked by new hitter-friendly SunTrust Park and he pitched much better on the road last season. Teheran has loads of ability but could use the guidance of a smart and understanding pitching coach to reach his true potential.

Alex Wood, Los Angeles Dodgers: 3-10 (2-7 Away)

The Dodgers have and continue to tinker with Wood's delivery to make him as effective as possible. His 16 wins a year ago speaks to his talent and what he could do with more confidence. The 2018 season will probably determine the southpaw's career path.

NCAA Tournament's biggest betting mismatches: National Championship

The Wildcats have proven to be deadly from 3-point range during the tournament, if the Wolverines defense can't stop them, will they be able to keep up?

For a tournament that provided some of the biggest moments and most stunning upsets in NCAA history, the Final Four was surprisingly short of drama. Both the Michigan Wolverines and the Villanova Wildcats cruised to double-digit victories in their respective semifinal matches, and will compete for the national championship Monday night in San Antonio. The Wolverines roared back from a seven-point halftime deficit to top Loyola-Chicago 69-57, while the Wildcats rolled to a 95-79 rout of Kansas.

Villanova has easily been the most impressive team in the tournament - and oddsmakers have rewarded that dominance by making the Wildcats a whopping 6 1/2-point favorite to capture second NCAA tournament title in three years. Yet, despite winning all five of their March Madness games by at least 12 points, they won't be getting a pushover in the final - Michigan clamped down hard in the second half of their triumph over the fan-favorite Ramblers as they seek their first NCAA championship since 1989.

Michigan's struggles from deep vs. Villanova's incredible 3-point shooting

The primary focus in this one will be on how Michigan's vaunted defense handles a Villanova offensive attack that has emerged as the best in the country. The Wolverines' defensive pressure is sight to behold, as Michigan held four of its five NCAA Tournament opponents below 65 points. But it won't matter how defensively adept the Wolverines are if they can't score enough points - and when it comes to converting from beyond the arc, these two teams aren't even close.

Michigan has two days to re-learn out how to hit a 3-pointer - and given how the Wolverines performed from long range in its previous two games, head coach John Beilein had better make it a priority at practice. After going 14-of-24 from 3-point territory in a third-round rout of Texas A&M, Michigan went on to hit just 11-of-50 attempts from beyond the arc in subsequent victories over Florida State and Loyola-Chicago. And a similar showing Monday night will make this game a laugher from the start.

Make no mistake, the Wildcats will face plenty more resistance from long range than they did in their emphatic victory over the Jayhawks, when they established a Final Four record with 18 3-pointers. But few teams have been able to tame Villanova, one of only 19 Division I teams shooting better than 40 percent from beyond the arc for the season. And with six different players - including all five starters - hitting multiple 3s in the Final Four, there could simply be too much firepower from deep for Michigan to handle.

Wolverines' free-throw follies vs. Wildcats' fantastic foul shooting

It's clear the Wolverines won't be able to claim their first national title in 29 years by trading 3-pointers with the Wildcats; Michigan was fortunate to escape with a win over the Ramblers despite making just seven of their 28 attempts from deep. But that isn't the only mismatch the Wolverines will have to deal with - Michigan has been one of the worst free-throw-shooting teams in the country this season, and that could be their undoing against a Villanova team that has been dead-eye from the line.

Beilein has worked with his players all season in an attempt to remedy their foul-shooting woes - but between having them focus on positive outcomes to "thinking about the ones (they) love" - a suggestion made in jest - nothing has worked. Michigan is converting at a 66.2-percent clip through 40 games; only 30 Division I schools have fared worse. And despite showing signs of improvement during the tournament, the Wildcats were just 12-for-18 in the victory over Loyola-Chicago.

Villanova hasn't needed any gimmicks or remedies; the Wildcats are one of the top-shooting teams from the free-throw line, making their foul shots at a 78-percent rate - good for ninth in the country. Villanova shot better than 82 percent in each of its previous three games before going just 5-for-7 against the Jayhawks - but they were shooting so well from 3-point range that they really didn't need the foul shots. If Michigan can't stay out of foul trouble Monday night, Villanova could run away with this one.

Michigan's elite ball-security vs. Villanova's struggle to force TOs

Bettors might read those first two sections and wonder if there are any reasons to take the Wolverines. And as it happens, there are. In addition to boasting one of the most formidable scoring defenses in the nation (63.0 ppg against, eighth-best in the country), Michigan is also one of the most careful teams in the country with the basketball. If the Wolverines can limit turnovers they way they have for the majority of the season, they should have an edge over a Villanova unit that hans't done well at forcing turnovers.

The Virginia Cavaliers - remember them? - are the only team in the country better at keeping turnovers to a minimum than Michigan, which has committed just 9.2 per game. The Wolverines boasted a 17-11 turnover advantage in their triumph over the Ramblers, and have put up a plus-20 turnover margin over their previous four tournament games, averaging just nine turnovers per contest over that span. It's a major reason why they've attempted an average of three more field goals per game than their opponents.

When you have an offense as prolific as Villanova's, you can be forgiven for showing a few cracks on defense. But with this game expected to be a slower-paced affair than the Wildcats are used to, it's worth noting that they don't generate many turnovers, averaging just 13 per game - ranking outside the top 150 among Division I teams. Villanova has also lost the turnover battle in each of its previous three tournament games; extending that streak to four could very well cost the Wildcats the national title.

Villanova is one win away from its second national championship in three seasons, but its final hurdle appears to be a daunting one. Michigan owns the longest winning streak in the nation at 14 games and will attempt to upset the Wildcats when the teams square off Monday in San Antonio in the NCAA Tournament title game.

Villanova was a good 3-point shooting team in 2015-16 when it won the national championship (highlighted, of course, by Kris Jenkins' championship-clinching 3-pointer at the buzzer), but the Big East champions have taken it to a new level this season. The Wildcats set a Final Four record with 18 3-pointers in Saturday's semifinal victory over Kansas and have made at least 13 3-pointers in four of their five wins in this event. “It’s our best offensive team. We’ve had some good ones. This is definitely our best," said Villanova coach Jay Wright, whose squad hopes to hand Michigan its first loss since Feb. 6. The Wolverines defeated upstart Loyola Chicago on Saturday, rallying from a 10-point second-half deficit to move to the brink of their first title since 1989.

They have given up more than 63 points only once in this tournament and harassed Loyola into 1-of-10 3-point shooting and 17 turnovers, while Moritz Wagner (24 points, 15 rebounds) handled the bulk of the burden offensively. Charles Matthews added 17 points, but fellow starting guards Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and Zavier Simpson combined for seven points on 2-of-17 shooting and must be better against the Wildcats' talented backcourt.
