OUR opening day of the MLB season was deemed a success (2-1)
but we’ve got plenty of work to do to reach our lofty expectations.
Here’s our best bets for the action ahead:
Philadelphia Phillies @ Atlanta Braves
The Braves will look to make it 2-0 to start their three-game series with the Phillies when they send Mike Foltynewicz to the mound at SunTrust Park. While Foltynewicz didn’t pitch well to end the 2017 season he did hold his own against the Phillies, going 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA against them. Consistency will be the biggest question mark surrounding the 26-year-old this season but he should come in with some swagger with the team going 7-3 in their last 10 games with Foltynewicz starting. Nick Pivetta meanwhile finished the season terrifically last time around but still wound up with a less than stellar 8-10 record to go with his 6.02 ERA. As far as totals go we do have a small lean on the Unders here but don’t have enough data to go with those projections just yet so instead we’ll lean on the home side to continue their recent dominance in this series at a decent price. We value Atlanta at $1.70 favourites here so feel we’re getting overs on the market as a result.
Tip: Atlanta Braves @ $1.79 (Crownbet) (0.5 units)
Houston Astros @ Texas Rangers
The Astros will look to make it a 2-0 start to the season when they send former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel to the mound in Texas. Keuchel recaptured his best form last season when he went 14-5 with a terrific 2.90 ERA to match. In his four appearances against the Rangers he managed to go 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA and our early data shows him doing more than enough to keep this Rangers line up at bay. The question here is, which version of Doug Fister will we get at the mound for the home side? After a strong start to the season with the Red Sox, Fister went 0-2 in his final four appearances on the season – and owned a horrible 9.18 ERA as a result. In his only appearance against Houston last season, he gave up three runs in just over five innings. Expect a strong showing from him to start the season after losing his way in his new surroundings last year, and if he can find his rhythm early he should help this total stay well Under the favourable total.
Tip: Under 9.5 runs @ $1.91 (Crownbet)
For Friday, Raise The Bar 1500♦ is the Chicago Cubs with Hendricks on the RUN LINE over the Miami Marlins with Smith. At of 7:45 am eastern, the Cubs are -1 1/2 runs, -135 both in Vegas and offshore.
Note: Both listed pitchers must start, or this is a NO PLAY.
