For your information folks ... "Excelsior" is Latin for "Upward, ever upward," and is the motto of the state of New York.The race was run at the old Jamaica Racetrack from 1903 to 1910, and then again from 1915 to 1959. In 1913, it was run at Belmont Park. It wasn't run at all in 1909, 1911, 1912, 1914, 1933, and 1967. Since inception, the race has been contested at various distances and as initially a handicap as the race was known as the Excelsior Handicap. Here in the 106th running of this stakes test, #7 CONTROL GROUP, the pace profile leader in this race, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in each of his last five outings, winning four times in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Kendrick Carmouch has been in his irons on two previous occasions, wimming 'em both, and is back this afternoon here in Ozone Park for his 3rd ride, gunning for a "Hat Trick Win!" #5 HARLAN PUNCH qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in four of his last five "adventures," including back-to-back-to-back "POWER RUN WINS" in his 2nd through his 4th race back.

TRIBUTE TO OSCAR (T) - Shows evidence of the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 68 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the best in this group of horses in this race. Must be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last race. HOLLY CAT (T) - Appears to be the type to be helped with second time Lasix here. Russell will probably be able to get this gelding to break out quickly in this event.

JUSTIFY - Smith is up for another race today after racing atop this animal for the 1st time on Mar 11th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. This rider and conditioner have a high win percent together. A campaigner coming back this soon after a solid outing is a good signal. BOLT D'ORO - This colt is in good physical condition, having run a nice race on Mar 10th, finishing second. I like the fact that this colt's last rating, 118, is tops in this bunch. INSTILLED REGARD - This colt is almost always in-the-money. Rosario and Hollendorfer perform well when they combine forces. It's hard to beat a +20 ROI for a jockey and conditioner. Last ran at Fair Grounds and finished fourth. Reviewing his PP data, I see he was close at the finish line, within five of the winner. CORE BELIEFS - Have to give this colt a good shot. Ran a sharp outing last out within the last month or so.

GRACEE HUNNY - When a sprinter is back in a race less than 10 days after her last outing, it generally means she's fit. The last time I saw this horse was at Turf Paradise in a race with an Equibase class figure of 78. Dropping significantly in Equibase class figure today puts her in a solid position in this race. This mare's last fig recorded on Mar 27th is at the top in last race Equibase speed figures. TRIGO PADIGO - Perkins tried her against the males last time out. This should be a good spot. She keeps getting closer at the finish with each and every start. Horse has improved at least two speed figure points in last 2 races. I look for that positive trend to continue in this race. Have to give this mare a chance. Ran a good outing last out within the last 30 days.

Mark this thoroughbred as a questionable contender. SECRET AGENT GIRL - Earned a run-of-the-mill speed fig last time out in a $3,000 Claiming race on March 20th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that number. YUMA THURMAN - A pattern of lessening speed figs 68/55/51 for this horse.
