Philadelphia 76ers vs. Miami Heat Preview and Predictions 04-21-2018

    20th April 2018 by Gracenote
philadelphia 76ers all-star center joel embiid returned with a vengeance from an orbital fracture and is intent on making things painful for the miami heat. embiid and the third-seeded 76ers look to take a 3-1 lead in the eastern conference first-round series on saturday in miami.

embiid had 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists in thursday's 128-108 trouncing of the heat after missing the previous 10 games, including the first two of the playoff series. "i am proud of what he did on the court and the professionalism he showed," 76ers coach brett brown said of embiid, who also knocked down three 3-point baskets. the sixth-seeded heat had few answers on how to defend embiid and coach erik spoelstra is aghast over the high number of points allowed (an average of 129) in his team's two losses in the series. "it's clear the first game and the third game were played on their terms," spolestra told reporters. "we do not want this to be a crawl. not that's how we play either, but we certainly don't want these crawling into 130s. that's definitely in their wheelhouse and we paid the price for that."

tv: 2:30 p.m. et, tnt, nbcs philadelphia, fs sun (miami)
about the 76ers: embiid is adjusting to wearing a mask to protect the healing eye bone and understands he will be sporting it for at least the rest of this series. "it was annoying," embiid told reporters. "but that was the only way i could play in this game, if i wore the mask and protected my face with goggles. i had to work through it and i did." philadelphia is also receiving superb contributions from backup shooting guard marco belinelli, who had 21 points in game 3 and is averaging 20.7 in the series.

about the heat: center hassan whiteside has been a complete nonfactor in the series with averages of 13.3 minutes, 3.7 points and four rebounds. whiteside accumulated four fouls in just 13 minutes of action in game 3 and again drew criticism for his latest subpar effort, and spoelstra said getting him back on track for game 4 is a huge priority. "he might not necessarily put up the numbers, but it's part of my job to figure it out and figure out how he can get to his strengths and be an impact player for us," spoelstra told reporters. "it starts with the defense, the rebounding. it's a lot of responsibilities for us offensively. i'll spend some time working that out."
    buzzer beaters
    1. sixers pf dario saric has scored at least 20 in all three games and made 11-of-23 3-point attempts while averaging 21.3 points.
    2. miami pg goran dragic tallied 23 points in game 3 for his second straight 20-point effort.

    3. philadelphia rookie pg ben simmons is averaging 20 points, 10 rebounds, 9.7 assists and two steals during the series.

    prediction: heat 109, 76ers 105

Portland Trail Blazers vs. New Orleans Pelicans Preview and Predictions 04-21-2018

      20th April 2018 by Gracenote
anthony davis and the new orleans pelicans are one victory away from completing a stunning yet dominating four-game sweep. the sixth-seeded pelicans look to finish off their demolition of the third-seeded portland trail blazers on saturday when the western conference first-round series resumes in new orleans.

new orleans dismantled the trail blazers in game 3 and led by as many as 33 points in the convincing 119-102 victory. coach alvin gentry and veteran point guard rajon rondo both emphasized that the pelicans need to close it out in game 4 as the franchise looks to reach the second round for the first time since 2008. portland seemingly has no answers on how to stop new orleans and is focused on avoiding the sweep and then letting things play out. "we've got to figure it out," shooting guard cj mccollum told reporters. "dig deep, understand that it still can be a long series if we can get a win here and get back home."

tv: 5 p.m. et, tnt, nbcs northwest (portland), fs new orleans
about the trail blazers: the guard-oriented offense isn't working well with star damian lillard struggling and mccollum's 9-of-16 shooting in game 3 representing his best effort of the series. mccollum scored 22 points in game 3 and is averaging 21 in the series, while lillard scored a series-high 20 in game 3 but is a dismal 18-of-55 shooting through three games. "as much as they've played well and we haven't, three games to zero, that doesn't mean that it's over with," lillard insisted to reporters on friday. "that don't mean that we walk around here defeated. we just gotta get one. the series can change after one game, especially going back home."

about the pelicans: forward nikola mirotic is enjoying a superb series and is averaging 21 points after exploding for 30 points on 12-of-15 shooting in game 3. mirotic has made 11 3-pointers while averaging nine rebounds, 2.3 blocked shots and 1.7 steals in the series and the trail blazers seem to have no answer on how to handle the trio of davis, guard jrue holiday and mirotic, who was acquired from the chicago bulls at the end of january after demarcus cousins (achilles) was lost for the season. "i knew i was capable to have games like this, but i never want to force any shots and always want to play simple, play for my teammates the same way they play for me," mirotic told reporters after game 3. "i just want to show them they were right to bring me here."
      buzzer beaters
      1. davis is averaging 28.3 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.3 steals in the series.

      2. portland swingman evan turner (toe) is questionable after missing game 4.

      3. new orleans recorded 16 steals while forcing 24 turnovers in game 3.

prediction: pelicans 115, trail blazers 110

Houston Rockets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Preview and Predictions 04-21-2018

        20th April 2018 by Gracenote
houston rockets guard james harden is likely to take home his first nba mvp trophy this season and is the best player on the team with the best record in the league, but he is not the whole team. the rockets will take any offense they can get from harden when they try to push their lead in the best-of-seven first-round series to 3-0 when they visit the minnesota timberwolves on saturday.

harden went 2-of-18 from the floor in game 2 but houston still managed to post a 102-82 win as the nba's leading scorer in the regular season (30.4) turned it up on the defensive end. "i'm more happy than anybody right now, believe it or not, just because i'm not really worried about my shot," harden told reporters. "i had those same shots in game 1, and they went in. in game 3, i'll shoot those same shots. ... i just tried to make an impact on the game in other ways, not just offensively. happy we got the win." minnesota is struggling to get all-star karl-anthony towns involved in the offense, and the center totaled 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting in the first two games after averaging 21.3 points during the regular season. "you want to win badly but you dwell too much on the past, you forget that you've got to take care of the present," towns told reporters. "you've got to move on. we came in, we had a great practice, great focus, great concentration. i think we're ready to go tomorrow."
tv: 7:30 p.m. et, espn, at&t sportsnet southwest (houston), fs north (minnesota)
about the rockets: houston's supporting cast stepped up to help harden on wednesday, with houston native gerald green coming off the bench for 21 points and trevor ariza adding 15. "i know how hard they work," harden told reporters of his teammates. "it might not go good all the time just because me and chris (paul) dominate the ball a lot. ... when i have bad shooting nights and they back me up, that's what it's about. i'm proud of those guys and they continue to work. they continue to focus on the right things to do and great things always happen when you have that mindset." paul added 27 points and eight assists in game 2.
about the timberwolves: minnesota remains confident despite being in an 0-2 hole and is excited to play the franchise's first home playoff game since game 5 of the western conference finals in 2004. "it feels good," timberwolves swingman andrew wiggins told reporters after friday's practice. "houston took care of business up there and now we've got to do the same up here. i know the fans will be excited, the atmosphere will be crazy and the whole team, we're confident. we're ready." wiggins led minnesota's starters and was one of only three players on the team to score in double figures with 13 points in game 2.
        buzzer beaters
        1. the rockets are shooting 29.2 percent from 3-point range in the series.

        2. minnesota sf nemanja bjelica scored a team-high 16 points in wednesday's game 2 after going scoreless in game 1.

        3. houston sg eric gordon is 6-of-23 from the floor in the series, including 3-of-17 from 3-point range.

        prediction: rockets 106, timberwolves 104

Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Utah Jazz Preview and Predictions 04-23-2018

          20th April 2018 by Gracenote
the utah jazz took homecourt advantage behind rookie star donovan mitchell with a win at oklahoma city in game 2. the jazz will try to hold onto that advantage when they host the thunder in game 3 of the best-of-seven western conference first-round series on saturday.

utah dropped game 1 and fell behind in game 2 before outscoring oklahoma city 28-16 in the fourth quarter to steal a 102-95 victory. "as much as anything, i think our team stayed together," jazz coach quin snyder told reporters. "there was a determination, and we felt like we just needed to rely on our defense - and that's what we did. obviously, donovan's aggressiveness on the offensive end fueled us there." the veteran thunder aren't panicking after one loss and understand the ebbs and flows of a playoff series. "it's all about kind of just understanding the situation that we're in," oklahoma city forward carmelo anthony told reporters. "in the playoffs, in these types of situations where you win one, you lose one, i've seen times where people just panic and start overthinking and things like that. when i go back and look at the game and recap and watch the film, utah did a great job in game 2, but i think we beat ourselves by not doing the small things."
tv: 10 p.m. et, espn, fs oklahoma, at&t sportsnet rocky mountain (utah)
about the thunder: anthony is off to a slow start in his first playoff series with oklahoma city and is 11-of-31 from the floor through two games. "there's things that we can correct, things that we have to correct, things that we will correct," anthony said. " on to the next game. we threw the first punch, they punched us back tonight and now we have to go on the road and get a win at their place. that's the mindset." small forward paul george, who dubbed himself "playoff p," went 6-of-21 from the field in the loss.
about the jazz: mitchell got some help in game 2 from backcourt mate ricky rubio, who collected 22 points, nine assists and seven rebounds after struggling to 5-of-18 from the floor in game 1. "i was looking for my shot too much," rubio told reporters after the win. "in game 1, i was over-aggressive. i didn't look to get my teammates involved. tonight, i did a better job of looking for my teammates and i took shots when they were open. i had to remember that we play as a team, and that was our strength." the backcourt production was matched up front by rudy gobert and derrick favors, who combined for 33 points and 31 rebounds.
          buzzer beaters

          1. mitchell's 55 points are the most for a rookie for a rookie guard in his first two playoff games, surpassing the 53 points scored by michael jordan.

          2. oklahoma city pg russell westbrook recorded a double-double in each of the first two games.

          3. utah pf jonas jerebko scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting in game 2 after going scoreless in game 1.

          prediction: jazz 113, thunder 102

New Jersey Devils vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Preview and Predictions 04-21-2018

            20th April 2018 by Gracenote
the tampa bay lightning would like to match their defensive performance from last time out and close out the visiting new jersey devils when the teams meet for game 5 of the eastern conference first-round series saturday afternoon. the lightning held the devils to a 5-on-3 power-play goal and limited the opportunities for hart trophy candidate taylor hall in a 3-1 victory wednesday that gave them a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.

tampa bay's nikita kucherov recorded a pair of goals to go along with an assist wednesday, pushing his point total to nine for the series, and the lightning hope to continue getting major contributions from their top players to end the devils' season. "they're going to put up a great fight," tampa bay defenseman dan girardi said friday. "we need to be ready for their intensity at the start. it's not a wait and see game. we have to make sure we dictate the play the first five (minutes), get our crowd behind us and create some energy from it." new jersey needs to find a spark offensively as hall (six) and rookie defenseman will butcher (three) are the only players with more than two points in the first four games, but the devils have thrived in the underdog role this season and a road win saturday would apply plenty of pressure. "i've got a lot of competitors in that room," new jersey coach john hynes told the star ledger. "i got guys with a lot of pride, guys that have had that pushback all year long - guys that have been counted out and they always respond."
tv: 3 p.m. et, nbc or nbc sports network, tva 2
about the devils: new jersey has had plenty of chances on the power play, especially in the last two games, but is 3-for-18 with the man advantage in the series and two of their goals came with a 5-on-3 skater advantage. "just couldn't find some lanes. i think we were fighting it a little bit," devils center travis zajac told reporters after game 4. "we'll bounce back. we've got some good players on (the power play), and it will be a factor next game for us." defenseman sami vatanen, who averaged more than 23 minutes of ice time in the first three games, did not travel with the team after suffering an upper-body injury in game 4 - but has not been ruled out for saturday.
about the lightning: kucherov also became a physical force in wednesday's win as his hit knocked vatanen out of the game and he avoided a suspension when the league deemed the first contract was to the shoulder. "kuch (wednesday) flexed his muscles," coach jon cooper told reporters. "... when you're playing both sides of the puck, you're contributing offensively, defensively, you're physical, you're engaged, it does nothing but lift our team." vezina trophy finalist andrei vasilevskiy has been outstanding in the series, stopping 133 of the 142 shots he has faced for a .937 save percentage and 2.26 goals-against average.
            overtime

            1. hall was held to one shot on net in game 4 after collecting 17 in the first three contests of the series and impressive rookie c nico hischier also had one.

            2. kucherov is slated to play his 50th playoff game saturday and needs one point to tie vincent lecavalier (52) for second in franchise history for postseason scoring.

            3. tampa bay rw ryan callahan (upper-body), who missed the last two contests, practiced fully friday and is a game-time decision for saturday.

            prediction: lightning 4, devils 1

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Washington Capitals Preview and Predictions 04-21-2018

              20th April 2018 by Gracenote
alex ovechkin thrilled washington capitals fans when his guarantee rang true of the eastern conference first-round series being even at two wins apiece against the columbus blue jackets when it returns to the district of columbia for game 5 on saturday afternoon. while ovechkin altered the course of the series, the capitals hope to change the narrative of the road team emerging victorious in all four contests thus far.

washington's top line quieted nationwide arena in thursday's 4-1 victory, with evgeny kuznetsov collecting a goal and three assists while ovechkin notched his third straight multi-point performance by joining tom wilson in registering one of each to make good on his guarantee. "there was no other option," goaltender braden holtby said of the team's mindset to even the series. "our goal is to win a stanley cup, and that's what we viewed as our best chance after losing the first two. we've been a confident group all year - i think that's been our strongest asset - so i don't think we've ever doubted ourselves." now that doubt may shuffle over to columbus, which saw its first series lead in franchise history erased on home ice after the team "laid an egg" in game 4 -- in the estimation of coach john tortorella. "it seems like the home rink isn't too kind right now in the series. hopefully we can jump on them in their barn again," captain nick foligno said.
tv: 3 p.m. et, nbc or nbc sports network, sportsnet, tvas
about the blue jackets: cam atkinson and former calder trophy recipient artemi panarin saw their respective 12- and eight-game point streaks come to a halt on thursday, with the latter looking out of sorts with two penalties after being whistled for just 26 penalty minutes in 81 contests this season. boone jenner scored his team's lone goal in game 4, but the 24-year-old has lamented his team's slow starts after surrendering the first tally in each contest this series. "we want to score the first one, obviously," jenner said. "it hasn't been like that, but i think our starts have been there. (on thursday), i don't think it was. that first period, we didn't get much pressure on them and kind of played into their hands a little bit."
about the capitals: defenseman john carlson has continued his torrid pace following a career-best 68 points (15 goals, 53 assists) during the regular season with an nhl-high seven of his eight points coming on the power play. "he always raises his game in playoffs. ... pressure doesn't affect him and that's one of his biggest assets and i think that's why we lean on him so heavy in playoffs," holtby said of the 28-year-old, who is riding a six-game point streak (one goal, nine assists) and has logged 28:10 of ice time in the series. t.j. oshie scored in the second period on thursday to give washington a power-play goal in each of its first four contests in the series and improve to 10-for-29 in the last seven games.
              overtime
              1. washington lw andre burakovsky will miss the remainder of this series after undergoing "minor surgery" for an upper-body injury sustained after a hit from jenner in game 2, coach barry trotz said.
              2. columbus c alexander wennberg (upper body) skated on friday morning but is uncertain to play in game 5.

              3. nine of the last 13 games in the all-time series between the two teams have been decided by a single goal.

prediction: capitals 3, blue jackets 2

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Boston Bruins Preview and Predictions 04-21-2018

                20th April 2018 by Gracenote
the last time original six rivals boston and toronto met in the postseason, the bruins needed a miraculous comeback in the final minutes of game 7 before ousting the maple leafs in overtime. five years later, toronto is in position of needing a miracle comeback of its own, trailing the eastern conference best-of-seven series 3-1 heading into saturday's game 5 at boston's td garden.

the maple leafs can look to the past for inspiration -- they also trailed the series 3-1 in 2013 before blowing a two-goal lead in the final 90 seconds of game 7 -- but they are lamenting a missed opportunity in thursday's 3-1 setback against a bruins team missing its top-line center. "when (patrice) bergeron didn't play tonight, you're set up pretty good," toronto coach mike babcock said. "you've got to find a way to win. this is in our building. you've got to win." bergeron skated on his own friday, which was called a "positive" by coach bruce cassidy, who said he will make a decision on the four-time selke trophy winner's status at saturday's morning skate. bergeron's line accounted for 20 points in the first two games at td garden as boston steamrolled toronto by a combined 12-4 margin.
tv: 8 p.m. et, nbc, cbc, sportsnet, tvas (toronto)
about the maple leafs: toronto will receive a boost with the return of center nazem kadri, a 32-goal scorer during the regular season who received a three-game suspension for a dangerous hit on boston's tommy wingels in the series opener. "it's exciting to get back in," kadri said. "i've been champing at the bit the last couple of games here. it has been hard to watch knowing you could be out there trying to help and trying to make an impact. i'm just happy the time has come." kadri's return will mean a demotion for tomas plekanec, who scored the team's only goal thursday -- his first since he was acquired from montreal.
about the bruins: bergeron, who is up for his fifth selke trophy as the game's best defensive forward, collected five assists in the first two games, but with riley nash taking his place, brad marchand scored a goal and david pastrnak continued his brilliant play with two assists to bump his series point total up to 11. goaltender tuukka rask has been overshadowed by the offensive exploits through much of the series but he answered the bell in game 4 by turning aside 31 of 32 shots in what marchand termed a "phenomenal game. he's one of the best goalies in the world and he gives us an opportunity to win every night."
                overtime

                1. maple leafs f auston matthews has been held off the scoresheet in three of the four games.

                2. marchand has four goals and 10 points in seven matchups versus toronto this season.

                3. maple leafs f leo komarov skated thursday but has missed the past two games.

prediction: bruins 4, maple leafs 2

                  #3 NINE ROUTE

Well folks, this race is named for the geographical area, Woodhaven, here in Queens, New York which became the site of two racetracks: the Union Course (1821) and the Centerville (1825). Union Course was a nationally famous racetrack situated in the area now bounded by 78th Street, 82nd Street, Jamaica Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. Aqueduct Racetrack, in Ozone Park, is bordered by Woodhaven. Here in the 4th running of "The Haven," #5 SAND DANCER, the overall speed leader in this field racing at, or about, 8½ furlongs on the grass, has turned in a quartet of "POWER RUNS" in his last five starts, hitting the board in three of those efforts. #4 FIFTY has posted a pair of "POWER RUN WINS" in his last three starts, including his "maiden-breaker" in his 2nd race back. Jockey Manuel Franco and Trainer Linda Rice send him to the post ... they've hit the board with 64% of their entries saddled as a team to date, winning at a highly respectable 30% clip!

PAUSEFORTHECAUSE should be supported as the wager in here. Should compete solidly in the early pace contest which bodes well with this group of horses in this race. Is a contender - given the 79 Equibase Speed Fig from her most recent race. The average Equibase class rating alone makes this entrant a contender. PURELY LUCKY - Well above average win clip at this distance/surface. Is difficult not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figs which have been very strong - 72 avg - of late.

                        # 4 SING FOR BEAUTY 3/1

I've got to go with MISSES KNIGHT. Will likely be one of the leaders of the pack going into the midpoint of the competition. Is a key contender - given the 73 speed rating from her most recent race. Her 75 average has this mare with among the best Equibase speed figs in this race. BLUEMOONOFSARATOGA - Could provide positive profits based on very good recent Equibase speed figs with an average of 71. Trainer boasts strong win figs at this distance and surface. SING FOR BEAUTY - The average Equibase class rating alone makes this entrant a solid contender. With a very good 70 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will clearly be a factor in this outing.

                          #3 BOTTLE SERVICE (ML=10/1)

MONSAJEM PERVADE - The jockey and conditioner combination have a profitable ROI when they join forces. I just may give this one a good shot. Should improve off last race where he did run out of the money, but was within 5 lengths at the finish line. UNEXPECTED JOURNEY - I have to figure Mathis is making a good move here. This gelding can only be aided by the shorter distance. Speed ratings on the grass point to this entrant as a legit contender. Has the best in the field for this distance and surface. This gelding is in fine form, having run a nice race on March 30th, finishing second. AZTEC WARRIOR - Running 1 mile on the turf, you've have to look at horse's turf figures. This thoroughbred has the tops in the bunch. The 95 most recent race rating looks strong in the TrackMaster PPs. Running on the grass today, you should review a horse's class. This one has the top number in the bunch. RENO JOHNNY - This rider and trainer's horses have been producing a positive ROI. I have to like this gelding's chances of winning at the shorter distance. Look for this one to go all the way home at some decent odds in today's race. Ran fifth in last race, but not more than five from the lead at the end. BOTTLE SERVICE - This horse brings in a lot of money per race. Uppermost in this event. I like when a horse wins after shipping in from elsewhere. It shows that they really like the track here. I'll take this gelding to win again. This gelding is certainly on the improve with speed ratings of 78, 81, 92 last three out.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DECLASSIFIED (ML=9/2),

DECLASSIFIED - Most unsatisfactory speed rating last time around the track at Golden Gate Fields at 6 furlongs. Don't believe this questionable contender will improve too much in today's event.

OPENING REMARK - I believe this horse isn't a natural sprinter. Routing is his best game and those last two sprints should have him set for a big run today. Great chance for this pony. Strong late speed and should have good position. Finished fourth at Gulfstream Park last out. Was close at the end and at odds of 8/1 in this event, he looks like a possible contender. FOREVER DI - Gelding won at this class and distance on November 25th at Gulfstream Park West.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 TAKEN TO CHURCH (ML=7/2), #3 ILLUSTRIOUS SON (ML=9/2), #10 GRAN CHIEF (ML=5/1),

TAKEN TO CHURCH - Hard to back the favorite when he continues to lose as the favorite. This entrant hasn't been on the track since March 29th. Not even any morning drills. ILLUSTRIOUS SON - This horse doesn't have a winning demeanor. Quite often finishes near the winner. GRAN CHIEF - This vulnerable equine showed very little last time out of the box finishing seventh. Don't see any chance of a reversal of fortune in today's event.

                            STRAIGHT WAGERS:
