Kris Medlen is a nice comeback story, but he’s unlikely to be successful against the defending World Champs tonight. Medlen was 1-3 with a 7.77 ERA in six starts with Kansas City in 2016 before he was sidelined with rotator cuff tendinitis.
He has undergone two Tommy John surgeries. He made 20 starts in Atlanta’s minor league system last year and was 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA in four starts at Triple-A Reno after signing with Arizona over the winder. Medlen has not pitched since April 25th.
Gerrit Cole is loving his new home in Houston. It has brought out the best in him. Cole has gone 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA and 0.792 WHIP in six starts this season. He has 61 K’s in 41 2/3 innings. Cole is also 2-2 with a 2.50 ERA in five career starts against Arizona.
Cole is 21-5 as a road favorite of -125 or more in his career. His teams are winning by 2.4 runs per game on average in this spot. Bet the Astros on the Run Line.

Both the Tigers and Royals have below average offenses. The Royals rank 28th in scoring. Kansas City, though, is swinging its hottest bats of the season averaging six runs during its last six games. But I'm going to step in with an Under play here. Why? One reason is Ian Kennedy is pitching. The Royals don't score for him. He gets the worst offensive support of any pitcher. The Under has been a sneaky gold mine when Kennedy takes the mound winning in eight of his last nine starts. Kennedy isn't pitching bad. He has a 3.48 ERA on the season and probably won't have to deal with the feared Miguel Cabrera, who is likely headed to the DL after suffering a hamstring strain Thursday. The Tigers have scored three or fewer runs in seven of their last nine games. Francisco Liriano goes for the Tigers. He's 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA. Opponents are batting just .196 against him. Liriano hasn't surrendered more than three earned runs during any of his first five starts.

If either of them can get the bats going during a three-game series starting Friday in St. Louis, they’ll have a chance to put some distance between themselves and their arch-rivals.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jose Quintana (3-1, 5.74 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Miles Mikolas (3-0, 3.27)
Quintana has been inconsistent in his first five starts, allowing four or more runs three times but tossing two scoreless outings. The 29-year-old was dominant Saturday against Milwaukee, striking out seven and allowing two hits and one walk over seven shutout innings. Quintana is 3-0 with a 3.13 ERA in four starts against the Cardinals.
After three seasons in Japan, Mikolas has quickly shown he can be an effective major-league starter. The 29-year-old has racked up 27 strikeouts and just two walks in 33 innings across his first five outings. He had a season-high seven strikeouts and held Pittsburgh to two runs and six hits over seven innings last time out for his third straight quality start.

Friday MLB Free play. My selection is on Baltimore over Oakland at 10:05 pm et on Friday.
The Orioles couldn't get anything going in Anaheim but I look for them to bounce back with a win in Oakland on Friday night.
Andrew Cashner will take the ball for Baltimore. After stringing together four straight reasonably strong outings, he was roughed up by the Tigers last time out. I'm confident we'll see him bounce back here, however, as he catches the A's returning home from a series in Seattle.
Daniel Mengden will counter for Oakland. Like Cashner, he is also coming off a poor performance last time out. He has essentially pitched well in just two of six trips to the hill this season. On Friday he'll be facing a highly-motivated Orioles lineup that is poised to fare much better than it did in Anaheim earlier in the week.
The O's have been a disaster on the road this season but perhaps the poor showing in Anaheim was the wake up call they needed as they head to Oakland for the opener of this series. The price is right to back the underdog O's in this spot. Take Baltimore (8*).

I'll gladly take my chances here with the Nationals once again as a short home favorite. We cashed in on Washington yesterday, as they finished off their 4-game sweep of the Pirates. We got what I felt was a favorable price in that contest and I feel the same here. The Nationals have won 5 straight overall and are really clicking on both sides of the diamond. They are scoring 5.3 runs/game and slugging .466 over their last 7 games. This while the pitching staff is only giving up 2.9 runs/game. Hard to not like Washington's chances here, as they send out Gio Gonzalez against Nick Pivetta. Gonzalez has a 2.67 ERA in 6 starts and was dominant in his last start, holding the Diamondbacks to 1 run on 6 hits in 7 innings. Gonzalez also owns a 2.69 ERA over 23 career starts against the Phillies. Pivetta has a 4.00 ERA and 1.33 WHIP on the road this season and a 7.45 ERA and 1.861 WHIP in his 2 career starts against Washington (both last year). Give me the Nationals -122!
