MLB best bets: Thursday, 10 May
By Josh Chahal -May 9, 2018
WE’VE had some dreadful luck go against us but it’s only a matter of time before these things start to even out once again.
Here’s our best bets as we look ahead to a new day:
New York Mets @ Cincinnati Reds
The Mets will look to claim their three-game series against the Reds but will need a better performance from Zack Wheeler at the mound. The right-hander allowed five-runs in the opening innings in his last start against the Rockies but has had a better time throwing at Great American Ball Park. In his lone appearance against Cincinnati he is 1-0 having allowed just a single run in six innings pitched but will need more from his offence than they produced last game. Despite their recent struggles the Mets are still averaging 5.00 runs per game on the road this season and will look to get to Sal Romano from the get-go in this one. Romano normally doesn’t offer more than five innings of work when given the start and currently sports a 4.21 ERA on the year. The issue for the Reds is that they still own a one of the worst bullpen’s in the league and so having Romano hit early will put a lot of pressure on their relief pitchers in this one. If you offered even money on the Mets to win this series we’d have taken it, so to get $1.90 in the decider works all the same.
Tip: New York Mets @ $1.90 (Crownbet) (1 unit)
Pittsburgh Pirates @ Chicago White Sox
The Pirates will look to make it three straight wins when they play the final game of their two-game series against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. Their win in the opener moved them to 7-2 against American League opponents and they’ll hope starting pitcher Trevor Williams can continue his strong start to the year against an inconsistent White Sox lineup. Williams has held opponents to a .193 batting average and owns a 3-1 record and an ERA of 1.69 in interleave play so far this season – he’s also given up two or fewer runs in six of his seven starts so far this season.
Tip: Pittsburgh Pirates @ $1.88 (Crownbet) (1.5 units)
    LA Angels @ Colorado Rockies
    Write up to come . . .
Tip: LA Angels @ $2.28 (Unibet) (0.5 units)
    Arizona Diamondbacks @ LA Dodgers
    Write up to come . . .
Tip: Arizona Diamondbacks @ $2.07 (Crownbet) (1 unit)

            8-Unit Play. Take #977 Atlanta (+100) over Tampa Bay (7:10 p.m. Wednesday, May 9)
Julio Teheran will finally be facing an opponent that is not the Mets, Nationals, or Phillies this season and in fact he has never faced the Rays in his career. Tampa Bay could be in for another long night at the dish with the way Teheran has been dealing lately. Teheran has allowed just six runs over his last five starts (29 innings) and I think he will have his way with Rays lineup that has only scored one run in their past two games. The Rays are going to be sending lefty Ryan Yarbrough to the mound for just his second start this year. Yarbrough has been used mostly in a long relief role for Tampa Bay as the Rays have used an unconventional approach with their starting pitchers to start the season. Youngsters Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna have been setting the table at the top of the Braves lineup and I think they will do more of that tonight. Combined with the Rays never facing Teheran, I think Atlanta gets out of Tampa Bay with two quick wins.

                            SportsLine's Adam Thompson
                            Here are Thompson's picks:

                            BOSTON +152

                            BOSTON @ N.Y. YANKEES | 5/09 | 7:05 PM ET

Apparently nobody can stop the Yankees. They've won 16 of 17, which is ridiculous in any sport, but especially baseball. So, of course, I'll take the Red Sox, who will throw Rick Porcello. Porcello shut down the pinstripes April 12, allowing no runs and two hits over seven innings. The sinkerballer keeps the ball in the park -- he's allowed two homers all year, a good trait to bring against MLB's top HR-producing squad. Plus, take away Brett Gardner's success against Porcello, and the rest of New York's lineup is a combined 18-for-105 (.171) lifetime against him. Masahiro Tanaka was torched by Boston for six runs in five innings April 11. Take the Sox at this great money line price.

                            WASHINGTON -125

                            WASHINGTON @ SAN DIEGO | 5/09 | 10:10 PM ET

When Gio Gonzalez is feeling it, it's OK to ride the wave. And right now, he's feeling it, allowing one run over his last 12 innings with 13 strikeouts. He's allowed just one home run all year, and faces a team that ranks 14th in the AL in homers hit, 12th in runs scored. The Nats have won nine of 10, outscoring the competition 5.5-2.6 in that stretch. Padres rookie Joey Lucchesi has managed just 15.2 innings over his last three starts, with nine runs and nine walks given up. Look for the Nationals to keep their winning way going.

                            ARIZONA +107

                            ARIZONA @ L.A. DODGERS | 5/09 | 10:10 PM ET

Oddsmakers have not yet fallen in love with the Diamondbacks, despite a 25-11 start. The latest example: Arizona is an underdog at the Dodgers (15-20), despite throwing Patrick Corbin, who has dominated L.A. in two starts this season (13.1 innings, 1 run, 3 walks, 17 strikeouts). Arizona is 10-5 when called a road underdog. Against fellow lefty Alex Wood (11 innings, 4 runs in two starts vs. Arizona), a Dodgers bullpen that's struggled and an offense that's banged up, take the Diamondbacks.
